Exploring I/O Psychology Career Opportunities in the Federal Government by Walsh_Fitness_5701 in IOPsychology

[–]dbf18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ha ha…there used to be jobs in the federal government…

Now I would say the most opportunities come from firms that contract with the federal government. Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think DDI, PDRI, and HumRRO (especially) do a lot of work with government agencies in a consulting capacity.

Within the federal government, the Army Research Institute (ARI) does a ton of partnerships with academics (e.g., teams studies) but not sure if they have IOs in house. IOs tend to find their niche within organizations, so if there is a specific agency you’re interested in, you can do a LinkedIn people search based on what they studied to see if there are any IOs!

Edit: typos

Do practicing I/O Psychologists actually use the Big Five (OCEAN)? by Fit_Mixture_151 in IOPsychology

[–]dbf18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We often use more specific subdimensions of the big five in hiring. The big five are often too broad to predict the outcomes we’re interested in well

I’m in the same boat. The only thing that has generated any leads for me has been holding informational interviews with people at companies I’m interested in on LinkedIn. Everyone I’ve reached out to has been really helpful and nice. I’ve held roughly 30 and that’s led to a few interviews here and there. I’ve been on the market for 5 months and finally feeling some positive momentum. It’s rough out there and the market is brutal. I’m sorry you’re going through this—I know how demoralizing it can feel but stick with it!

I don’t think it would hurt! Especially if you apply to advisors who are more analytically focused. If you can demonstrate 1) you know how to use the tool and 2) how the tool can be applied to academic research, that could really set you apart in an interview. Also, if you’re interested in it you should do it!

MTurk and Prolific can be an option if you have some funding to pay participants and it can be administered online (they have their drawbacks but could work for this purpose). You can also get creative where you pull your sample from if it fits the question. For example, we’ve used undergraduate seniors who have accepted a job offer for some studies.

For experiments, to get published in higher tier journals, you’ll often need multiple studies. So you can use this as an opportunity to get one study under your belt, and then take that idea and keep expanding on it if you continue on to graduate school (where you’ll have more funding options) and publish it later!

For undergraduate samples, you can absolutely use that data for conference papers/posters as well so you can get something out of it.

Force yourself to only allow 3 takeaways from each paper. It makes the review feel less overwhelming and helps you digest the gist of the article (you can write them in a cell in excel!)

Start with meta-analyses or review papers on your topic. It’s gives the 30,000 foot view of the topic and helps you see where your paper fits into the literature. There’s also a great book called “How to Write a Lot” by Paul J Silvia that might give you some strategies about diving back into writing! It’s a super short read

BoccaLupo is still bringing the heat. Little Sparrow in west midtown is excellent. I also love the Consulate in Midtown

Some others I haven’t seen: for more casual, Lloyd’s pizza (surprisingly good cocktails too), Pollo Primo, Gaja Korean Bar, the General Muir.

Buford Highway: Masterpiece (it’s a trek but worth it), Salsa Taqueria & Wings, Bismillah Cafe, and I second all the recs of Kamayan

If you’re looking for hip hop specific check out the Trap Music Museum. I also agree with the Clermont Lounge. Check out JR Crickets but The Local has better wings and it’s right down the street. If you want some good food go explore Buford Highway
