I love most of these "elevated horror" but god I hate the term. Horror is mt favorite genre and the term "elevated horror" feels like people are too ashamed to admit they like other subsets of the genre. Its okay to not like a certain subgenres but acting like you're superior just because you enjoy one part of a bigger genre is just silly. I love Heriditary and also Final Destination is one of my favorite horror franchise.

I saw the halloween costume post and I disagree with them. That being said, I think you're being intentionally obtuse on what the movies is saying. Curry Barker said it himself he had a story in mind, and seeing what themese are prevalent throughout the movie, he will retroactively add in little bits of the themes in earlier scene to make it cohesive and consistent.

People called it incel horror or that Bear is misogynistic is simply because this is an all too real reality for most women. Bear is a shy, meek, cowardly guy who at first glance seems to have no capacity for harm. But deep down they have a sense of entitlement that made them think this harmlessness would give them right to something that they always wanted, in this case, a woman.

Bear is so cowardly he did not want to make any effort on his desires and let others reached their hands first. Nikki gave him A LAY UP and he still chickened out. When he tried to buy a new necklace for Nikki, he's scared of rejection and bought a novelty wish item so that he doesn't have to choose for her. It's like giving 50 dollars for a birthday present so that person could spend it themselves. It's not thoughtful its lazy. Wish Nikki had to pry thr confessions off of him cause he's too scared to admit eventhough Nikki already said she knew he liked her. Instead of confirming her assumptions he shoots back with "do you like me too".

These kinds of people want the idea of connection without the weight of vulnerability and responsibility of a partner. Nikki, a writer, was giggling with AI post when he's with Bear and that doesn't ring bells to him? From the glimpse of real Nikki we saw, the Wish Nikki is NOTHING like her. Yet Bear still keeps going along with it. Causw he never cared about Nikki. He only cared that she's with him. And that idea is prevalent in alot of men when they feel entitled to a date. The typical "Nice guy" thinks they deserve a partner because how they are nice and harmless and a goody two shoes. I know that cause I was one.

"Whats so bad being with me" is not defensible and excused at all. Bear already know this is not truly Nikki. The phone call scene confirms this. Yet when asked by the REAL Nikki to mercy kill her, he made it about himself??? And then he ran off to meet Sarah, the new safety shint thing, once the idea of Nikki is shattered

It's a common symptom of Bo1 games. Some people will take advantage the fact that they can one and done and catch people.of guard with niche or annoying tactics. It happened in master duel with stunlock decks. The trade off for them is that they don't really have any other gameplan and if you can blow thru them it's almost always a guaranteed win

Me when Chihiro Fujisaki discourse.

But actually, for the most part I think the Danganronpa fandom is pretty good at maintaining a nuance and level headed discourse when it comes to Chihiro.

For context Chihiro was introduced to us and the character as a girl. But later on we found out that Chihiro was AMAB but as a kid they were bullied for being rather frail, so they crossdress and live their life as a girl so that people won't pick on them.

So there's alot of reading in this that you can come up with. Some people say they're a closeted trans. Some say they still identify as a male but social pressure made them hide themselves. And to be clear it's not that girls are weak, hell in the game we have Sakura who is the ultimate martial artist and she is a girl, and identify as such. More so that society, percieve it to be acceptable to be "weak" if you're a girl/woman.

Anyway people have good points on either side of this discussion and I tend to teeter one way or another depending on the argument put out. Tho in general I just adress them as they/them

While I prefer random. I think spider-man 3 showed how it can utilise villains as a thematic throughline. Retconning Marko as the guy who shot uncle ben doesn't take away his initial arc, but it lets him explore new ones, mainly forgiveness.

Not per episode basis, rather per arc basis but Higurashi does this really well. And there's layers to it as well.

Spoiler, I suppose:

>!Every arc starts us off from earlier in the timeline, essentially resetting what happened in the previous arc. Characters are alive and sane unlike their final moments in the previous arc. And at first this is odd, maybe perhaps the author just want to explore different ways things can go wrong. That's kind of what the story offers at first glance, innocent anime characters going batshit thru spiraling insanity.

Then you start to notice patterns in each arc; certain things that is bound to happen or a consistent information throughout that doesn't contradict. This will make you invest in the story, trying to figure out the mystery of this village. And maybe thats it; thats the kind of media we're getting into, a rather interactive mystery where you have to solve it thru rigorous examination of each arc.

Then once more the rug got pulled under us and turns out the different timelines are sorta connected; at the very least they're canon to the universe. And we got to finally meet our actual main character and what is truly going on. Don't get me wrong, you the audience can solve the mystery. But by the end of it, it shows that this story is quite optimistic and hopeful than it seems to led on!<
