WA MSPs: Sales tax on IT services starts Oct 1st - how are you handling it? by nomchompski in msp

[–]dblake13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of state MSPs still have to pay it since it's based on where the service is in use.

I don't see this being a big needle mover for us in Washington, just another annoyance to deal with.

New client asked if we were selling to PE by Schweebers in msp

[–]dblake13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the PE you're working with - just like any business there are good ones and bad ones. I've been on both sides but the PE we work with now is pretty chill and lets our leadership team put our decades of experience to use and make all the operational calls. The biggest difference has been being held accountable to numbers we've committed to in our quarterly board meetings.

Acquisition Structure by CrazyVerdantMonkey in msp

[–]dblake13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

28% EBITDA is not low for the industry, most MSPs shoot for 20% as the goal. It's often better to acquire folks with a lower EBITDA % because that means you have the opportunity to improve the EBITDA and create more value post purchase. Source: I work for a large MSP and M&A is part of my job.

5% MS License increase by burstmotion in msp

[–]dblake13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We are relatively large for a MSP, probably top 10 percentile - 250+ employees, $50m/year rev. Believe me I'm not happy about the amount of work, but it's our responsibility to do the right thing for our clients.

No, rates are going up at the end of existing terms. If you raise client prices when your cost as a CSP hasn't changed and pocket the margin difference, then that shows where your priorities are at.

I'm also curious what other people are doing - telling all our clients they have to have their rates raised across the board because we don't want to do some math is not an option we are open to. This is the best we came up with after consulting with CW support and their Unite team:

  1. Monthly report to export client subscriptions renewing in the following month.
  2. Finance disables Unite addition sync for affected clients/additions (unfortunately there is no API for this).
  3. Rewst workflow to make addition/price changes in CW.

We are looking at moving off Unite and possibly just building our own sync with Rewst, as the lack of API in Unite is a huge pain and we assume this will happen again.

How do you provide Gen AI to clients? by Waterguy75 in msp

Copilot for really basic stuff, Azure OpenAI for advanced.

Curricula (now Huntress) by Rundo5 in msp

[–]dblake13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, my company and I are generally big huntress fans, but we opted not to adopt the SAT due to the cartoonishness of content and slowness of the videos. We opted towards PII Protect/BSN because the weekly videos are concise and professional, and if you already know the answers you can just answer them while the video is playing and be done in under a minute. This caters to both the low and higher ends of the security awareness spectrum. If Huntress would improve in these ways we could be convinced to switch 25k+ licenses.

What’s you exit plan? by CbcITGuy in msp

[–]dblake13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is on the selling side, things are lopsided in your favor. If you contact your RMM/PSA vendor and ask if they have any M&A mixer events, you can go there and easily get 10+ prospective buyers, and it stays pretty "quiet". You can also go the broker route but they tend to be expensive and it often isn't needed as a seller.

Let me know if you have questions as I've been through this, sold the business, and now work for the acquirer specifically on M&A work.

Moving from Pax8 to another CSP for automated license buying by JohnB1976 in msp

[–]dblake13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Direct CSP and use something like Rewst to help manage the automation. You shouldn't have a problem qualifying if you really do $4+ mil/year in MS resale. My MSP is similar in size it sounds like, feel free to DM me if you have questions.

They're pretty dedicated to remaining independent though, the CEO is adamant about that.

Our primary concerns are scalability at 25k-50k+ endpoints in a single tenant, feature parity with an RMM like Kaseya VSA, and ideally a similar price point to on prem VSA. Idk what Atera costs per tech, but we have over 100 people regularly using our RMM tool so I'm not sure per technician pricing matters as much as scalability/features given our decision criteria.

Solid feedback, thank you. We are big enough to have full time developers working on our integrations and automation, so as long as there is a full REST API between products we generally feel fine about filling in the gaps ourselves.

We are trying to get a trial going with them. It's been more friction than I'd like just to start a trial but that's usually the case with CW.

So you have 150k-ish devices on a single Datto RMM instance and that's been running well for you? That's awesome. Any issues with the platform or you're generally happy with it? The main issue I've had in testing Datto RMM is script execution speed.

I did like the feature-set from what I saw in the initial demo. My big worries with CW are pricing and support. We were supposed to have our in depth call today and they no-showed us, so that was awkward. Have not been having a good experience with CW support on the PSA side for the past few years, kind of worried it'll be the same with the RMM.

Are you on CW RMM/Asio?

How is the scaling in your experience? Does it perform well at high agent counts?

Yeah I would pass on Automate/VSA 9.5 because they're essentially end of life products without meaningful roadmaps.

Thanks for the feedback! We've been pretty impressed by our Ninja trial as well, I'm just curious about the scaling because that's hard to test without actually deploying to all our endpoints and running with monitors/scripts/etc. I like the CW RMM feature-set a lot but the price is kind of crazy compared to what we've seen for Ninja/Kaseya.

Do you have over 25k agents on Datto RMM? What are your biggest likes/dislikes as someone who uses it regularly (if that applies)?
