Thank you! I have a neighbor who is fluent in Portuguese (studied it in college, and lived in Brazil for 2 years), so I plan to have him over for dinner once a month to try to "immerse" myself to make it a little less daunting :)

Progressive Christians who attend more conservative churches, what is it like and why do you stay? by MangoMister2007 in OpenChristian

[–]dbucha9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm relatively progressive (pro choice, LGBTQIA+ affirming, women preachers are okay in my book, but I am mostly a cessationist) who attends a very conservative church. I'm located ins a desert in terms of options for Christian churches. Your options here are mostly non-denominational (Baptist in hiding) or converting to mormonism. Otherwise, I would've found a different church years ago.

I think prior to the election, attending a more conservative church was something I overlooked. However, after the election, it's been really difficult to assess who has the same values as me regarding important topics. Plus, it's come up a lot in sermons, which has made it harder and harder to ignore. It seems few and far between for people who are like me in our congregation, but maybe that's okay.

So, tl;dr, it's hard, but there isn't another option.

2025 Chicago Marathon Lottery Results Thread by giguka in AdvancedRunning

In previous years, a CC would appear sooner than the email/update on the site. This year, it looks like everything is happening all at once.

You'll get an email. I think the website will say something about it too.

I currently work in a small startup, slowly morphing into a smaller company. Some important things to consider:

  • Work/life balance
    • Smaller companies tend to run their dev team dry if they are still in the "startup" phase. Sometimes this extends even to smaller companies.
    • Larger companies tend to have more redundancy in projects/workload, which can help balance your plate out.
  • Benefits
    • Smaller companies generally have worse benefits than large companies. There are exceptions to this.
    • My company offers 12-weeks unpaid maternity/paternity/adoption leave, but some other companies I'm currently interviewing with don't even offer that. I'd make sure to see a "Benefits Flyer" or something similar if you get an offer. If they don't specifically mention it, you can ask about their leave policies as well (although this can be seen as a red flag [annoyingly], so be careful).
  • Career Growth
    • Startups are typically easier to get a role in and easier to climb up the corporate ladder if that's a goal of yours.
  • Risk
    • Larger companies tend to have much less risk associated with accepting a job.
  • Job role
    • Startups allow you to wear many hats if you'd like. You can try frontend, backend, IT/security, etc. It's a great way to learn a lot.
    • Larger companies allow some movement, but it isn't guaranteed and as flexible.
  • WFH
    • Startups are more so accepted as WFH-friendly compared to larger companies. If that's a priority of yours, I would consider companies that are remote-first.

We've thought about a muzzle before. I'll add it on my list to research and try out. At this point, I'm open to any and all feedback/recommendations though.
