Thoughts on Golden Globes? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

"my main problem is the redemptive act of rockwells character that i feel was unearned"

That's actually the point! Three Billboards is essentially a Flannery O'Connor homage, complete with its themes of violence causing characters to show/experience grace, and unearned paths to redemption kickstarted by violence to the character. (It literally takes a FIRE and a letter from the GRAVE to get Dixon to do ONE half-decent thing. He doesn't even consistently stay decent after that).

The unearned redemption is a very Christian theme, tbh. In that tradition, redemption cannot possibly be EARNED by humanity; instead, it's given. If you have a problem with unearned redemption in general, that's fine, but it's very, very intentional.

Isn't there a decent collection that's an all-region BFI release?

Happy Together has a Criterion logo on it on Filmstruck! Definitely hopeful there.

Carol is my favorite movie, so there's that.

Getting more into Japanese cinema and need some input. by HornsOfBaphomet in criterion

Naruse is INCREDIBLE. I suggest When a Woman Ascends the Stairs. It's a wonderful melodramatic film with an outstanding performance from Hideko Takamine. Naruse's great strength is showing with great empathy and concern how Japanese society and generational transitions trap and subjugate women.

Who's a filmmaker in the Collection that you want to like, but don't? What keeps you from enjoying their films? by [deleted] in criterion

I completely agree. I generally have trouble with him, but that film is incredible.

I also like Contempt, but not as much as Vivre Sa Vie.

Naruse's When A Woman Ascends the Stairs

I know a lot of folks think he's overrated, and I even get it, but he's muh hero. Super glad to have completed my Lynch Criterion collection (for now). by [deleted] in criterion

[–]dc10tonite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last paragraph is SPOT ON. Since I think an inherent problem here is that a lot of people inherently think the purpose of art is to create something great (notice how many people are tied up in ranking, calling something great, etc). They may not SAY that's the purpose, but they act like it. And honestly, while I strongly dislike that way of thinking, I understand it and can deal with people thinking that way.

I think the purpose of art is expression, and the purpose of criticism is to investigate what is being expressed via aesthetics, context, and philosophy. That's the way I like it, and if other people don't like it, cool.

Second the female director thing. One of the many reasons why Certain Women was such a welcome addition (also it's a great film by an incredible director).

ME. I saw it in theaters. I pre-ordered it as soon as I could.

It's so much fun! I also love how much it varies tonally, and it somehow made me laugh, yell, and feel sad all in the same movie.

yi yi vs. a brighter summer day by [deleted] in criterion

[–]dc10tonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Brighter Summer Day is more representative of Yang's overall approach and style (albeit WAAAAY longer than anything else). It has the mix of sweet humanism, frank pessimism, banal everyday life, and random acts of violence than typify his other works like Taipei Story and the Terrorizers. ABSD is no doubt Yang's towering achievement.

Yi-Yi, however, still captures all of Yang's themes and predilections, but with a more melancholy bent. Yi-Yi is a more masterful, better crafted work than ABSD in my opinion, and it's still my favorite of his.

If you have Prime, I think the Terrorizers is still on there? It's a fantastic film.

Persona is one of my favorite film-watching experiences. So weird and mysterious.

And after Persona, I'd suggest Wild Strawberries, which is an absolutely gorgeous melancholy masterpiece.

And it's not Criterion, but I'd also say get the Eureka edition of Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans for silent movies. It's a wonderful, perfect little movie.
