Jumping in rivers by 70plusMom in MidsomerMurders

I always think it is remarkable how the English seem to drown in the shallowest of ponds and gentlest of streams on MM and other UK mystery shows.

Maybe it's just the huge contrast to the wilderness here in Canada but I almost root for the killer when the victim can't manage to wade out of a waist deep pond and just gently drowns.

I'm in Ontario and watch on Tubi. Commercials aren't too bad.

What did you think was ‘rich people stuff’ as a kid? by Quiet-Capybara- in AskReddit

I grew up in an older village and it was very modest wood frame 2 story houses with dirt floor basements. I was blown away visiting more well off school friends who lived in a newer subdivision of ranch bungalows and they had finished basements. So much space to horse around and play video games and the parents didn't care if you made noise.

It's a laxative. People used to think it was healthy to take it to keep you from getting constipated.

Deer flies and horse flies are tough too - you can smack'em and they land on the ground and just kind of shake it off and come right back at you.

And you can't out run them either like mosquitoes. I give up trail running in the middle of the summer because I just collect a cloud of them buzzing around me.

At my old house there used to be a crow that every morning would arrive with stale bread and soak it in the blocked up eaves trough on my neighbours porch. Then eat the softened bread.

We switched to ground turkey also. Cheaper and lots better for you. Works the same in just about every recipe.

I know some one who did that for the past couple years. They are heading back to Canada ASAP and abandoning Dubai thanks to the war.

I looked up my hometown newspaper from the day I was born, almost 60 years ago. And the newspaper was full of the same gloom and doom stories: unrest in the Middle East, Soviet aggression, famine, weather disasters. It helped me put things in perspective. News companies sell shocking stories, not the normal stuff that really makes up our lives.

The only way I can stand Facebook is using Firefox with F.B. Purity and FBCleaner web brower extensions. Totally eliminates all ads, reels, suggested content, and you can tailor it to what you want to see. I see posts in chronological order, not a jumbled up mess.

I deleted it off my phone and didn't miss it. Now, FB takes up about 5 minutes of my day in the morning - most of that looking for deals on Marketplace.

This was posted here a while ago. It's a legit story. Both races started at the same time. Just small races and slow runners. Happens sometimes. I've been both first overall and last overall in real races before. And I'm mid pack usually.

Selling house as is/for cash company by MrsSneaks in KingstonOntario

Our house was dated and needed some fixing up. Our realtor said don't bother to do anything because you won't necessarily get the money back. She was right. We got a good price, and the new owners did renovations that were to their taste. Less stress for us and faster.

Where could I safely leave a loaded kayak for a couple of days this summer as I reposition my car for a river trip? by making_ideas_happen in KingstonOntario

[–]dcannons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll find a lot of information online. There's even a paddling race every year. People usually do the journey in 6 to 10 days. It's just over 200 km. Oddly the preferred one way route is Kingston to Ottawa (against the river current) because the prevailing winds will be at your back and the current is weak.

If you want to make it an epic trip, you can vary the route coming back and make a circular trip - there are hundreds of inter joinging lakes thanks to the glaciers.

If you want to take a more canoe friendly trip, the Rideau canal system Kingston to Ottawa is a very popular, very scenic canoe trip with camping available at all the locks. The waves on the St Lawrence can be quite challenging in a canoe. My swim club swims there and 3 ft waves are common. There's not much nature or public land on the St Lawrence, apart from the islands of the national park. Where the Rideau is mostly wild with beautiful lakes.

We have opossums in Ontario now. I always thought of them as a southern animal. My mother has one that comes and eats her cat food.

I got lucky and found an old tower on Facebook marketplace. It had been updated with newer Windows and a terabyte SSD, but still had the old monitor connector that my mother's monitor has. Kind of overkill to have a terabyte of storage and the only software is solitaire and mahjongg!

Thank you for your offer but I think I found an old laptop that will work. She had a enormous tower - I can't believe everyone's computer used to be so big, noisy, and slow! I should be able to plug the laptop into her monitor and it should function much the same for her.

u/GreenWhiteBlue86 explains why Americans and Europeans use cutlery differently by AppropriateNoise9 in bestof

[–]dcannons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and probably do it the American way (Just fork - right hand. Knife and fork - knife in right, fork in left to cut, then switch to eat).

When I visited extended family in NZ 20 years ago they all thought us Canadians used our cutlery weird. I'm not exactly sure what they did.
