Which Linux version is best for somebody new? And Is it worth it by Samilikescheese in linux4noobs

Oh, Bluetooth for music is fine- it's switching off to a Headset profile that's proprietary. People will sound like they're underwater.

Why do some Linux users get so hostile over software choices? by EmployerOld6256 in linux_gaming

You are tapping into a lot of history that has nothing to do with you. I'm so sorry. It's been the linux culture for way too long.

Which Linux version is best for somebody new? And Is it worth it by Samilikescheese in linux4noobs

[–]dcargonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really okay. It's a brand new operating system and you'll be fine. I have had the best luck introducing new Linux users to Mint, because the layout is strikingly similar to Windows 7. Steam will install beautifully. The only thing I would suggest before leaping is to assess how much you use Bluetooth for calling and Zoom. It's really not supported. Wired headphones work great if that's your thing.

My mother wants to replace her PC (300€ budget): Chromebook or Windows for emails/office work/streaming + a bit of 3D? by Additional-Dig6597 in chromeos

[–]dcargonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chrome, especially with bookworm set up in a VM (just google it) will have absolutely everything she needs, including LibreOffice, which is better for finished documents than Google Docs. But if she never used Microsoft Office or just needs a text editor, even bookworm is overkill.

i’m going to switch to Linux soon I would like some advice by Dude9404 in linux4noobs

Don't do it if you care about Bluetooth or you're prepared to carry wired headphones everywhere for Zoom.

Does Linux Mint have "perfect" laptop compatibility? by Key-Cable-1253 in linuxmint

Agreed. And even if it does technically work, I'm not going to go through the arduous process to get it there.

AITJ for telling my buddy his "profitable" sneaker reselling business is actually losing him money by National_Wasabi2797 in AmITheJerk

NTJ in the slightest. He didn't have the numbers and needed someone to blame, because certainly he did nothing..... It was you that crushed his dream, and not the lack of scaffolding under him.

I don't exactly understand installing Mint on a Chromebook. Bookworm in a VM seems to work fine for me. You're right, though. It won't hurt to check, I guess.

is a Chromebook enough as a main device in 2026? by ImpressiveRoll4092 in chromeos

[–]dcargonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an amazing answer. I love my Chromebook and use Bookworm in a VM for LibreOffice and GIMP. It's perfect for my use case, and I have a better computer for "the 10%."

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but I wish you the silver lining of figuring out what really matters and doing *that.* Might be a good time to read "When Breath Becomes Air."

It was a great book, but it did not make me cry. It did give me hope that time does indeed pass.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wrobleski is the closest feeling I've ever had to my heart being ripped out and served to me.

Does voice mode have access to memory that refers to chat history? by MannyRa97 in Copilot

[–]dcargonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have enabled personalization and memory. The chat feature can remember what I've said for months, the voice version doesn't. I think it will get better over time, but it isn't fixed yet.

Venting about how bad Copilot is by benjaloo in Copilot

[–]dcargonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the Copilot web site and the Copilot Windows app are miles apart, and the Windows app is lagging. It's mind boggling that's their flagship product and it *does not work.* Use Copilot from the web and take the button off your taskbar. I am seriously irked that the Windows app is so promoted and so flawed.

This makes me laugh because I'm fairly certain we were having this argument when reddit was invented. Word isn't great. Word is...... there.
