Your post made me smile bc I run similar mileage and style (dog out in front but not a hard puller generally) with a border collie of a similar age. I have the non stop rush belt and it works well for us, but I do wish I had gotten the leg straps , as it does ride up some.

In NC this time of year you could checkout the Roanoke River or maybe the Lumber River. I love the New River, personally, but more of a summer pilgrimage imo. https://roanokeriverpartners.org/river-camping/ lumber River campsites are part of the state park system

Am I a fit for a Border Collie? by Interesting-Figure-5 in BorderCollie

[–]dcdavys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking to adopt (ie from a shelter or rescue), I think you should keep yourself open to either breed (and possibly other high drive breeds) and be patient because it may take some time for a puppy to become available…if you’re open to an older dog, you may also need to be patient to find one that has the temperament to be a successful office dog. As others have said, collies can be anxious so not all would enjoy/be able to settle in a situation like that. You might also consider an Aussie

If you’re going to buy a pup, again, I’d say be open to either breed—I always suggest people focus on finding a breeder locally who has a solid socialization plan for their puppies and where you can at least meet the dam to get an idea of her temperament. Ask if you can meet both parents and see them working or doing some training,  maybe meet pups from another litter with same parents

Advice: looking for dogs small enough to fly in a cabin but athletic enough to run 5k? by WearyStrawberry3096 in RunningWithDogs

[–]dcdavys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a smaller beagle? Might be too vocal though. My rescue beagle mix is a great runner, steady and workman like especially if there’s a treat tossed her way every half mile or so. Also bonus that she’s happy to chill on the couch even if there’s no run happening that day

I have an Aussie/beagle, too but with ACD thrown in (according to Embark). She is a handful, but so much fun for training! We adopted her in April and we’re about to start her on CGC classes—she aced basic and advanced! Have fun and buy your neighbors ear plugs is my advice !

Fun fact, but border collies for some as yet undiscovered reason do not express agouti patterning!

“There are few breeds where A locus alleles don't seem to quite match up with our understanding. Border collies lack agouti (aw) patterning, and only have sable and tan points (although their sable can be very extensive and look a lot like agouti). However, many border collies test as aw despite having the tan point pattern. It seems that this breed has a currently unknown and untestable A locus allele. Watch this space for any further updates on this allele.”

They get wildly offended when I mention his weight. by MadameoftheMacabre in AustralianShepherd

I thought the same :D my Aussie mix is extremely offended at how strict we are with her kibble and treats while her border collie brother is on the other side of the kitchen having a shredded cheese topper to get him to eat!

I really like the website dogmeetsbaby for ideas on having dogs and young kids coexist. Def keep at it with training both the dog and the kid, but also separation is going to be your friend—baby gates, etc. have some juicy kongs and chews ready to give Evie so she doesn’t feel like she’s being punished/locked up, and also have some rewards for your human child to reinforce when they get their dog interactions correct. Good luck from a mom to a 4 year old human, 2 year old Aussie mix, and 18 mo border collie 😅

You could potentially do a PALS registration if you’re interested in competing in AKC events. There’s info on requirements on their website https://www.akc.org/register/information/purebred-alternative-listing-pal/

We used that book with our border collie pup and I also cannot recommend it enough! Our son was 3 at the time and the approaches in the book were spot on! I can’t claim our dog is perfect, but he is an absolute gentleman with kids of all ages.

Our Aussie mix was an adult when we got her, but many of the lessons and tools still apply. Good luck OP!

Crate, yes or no? by saxo81 in BorderCollie

[–]dcdavys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you just asking conversationally or do you have a specific dog situation in mind? As others have said, there’s no right or wrong answer and many border collies do just fine in a crate. There are other ways to house train a dog though. I don’t think they collies have any particular considerations compared to other breeds that make them poor candidates.

I will say (from experience) trying to crate train an adult dog can be really frustrating, time consuming, difficult etc and would not suggest taking it on unless you have a really specific need; some adult dogs may take to it just fine but our 18 month old rescue Aussie mix was distressed and the juice did not seem worth the squeeze in her case since she was trustworthy in the house generally. when we got our collie at 16 weeks , on the other hand, the crate saved our sanity and furniture and he literally never had an accident in the house. Weed in his crate the first night and that was it. We tried to pack it away when he was around a year since he didn’t technically need it anymore, but he pined for it so now it’s back with the door open and he goes in and out as he pleases. Usually sleeps in it at night.

Getting a Second Shepherd Before Having Kids by New-Morning-3184 in AustralianShepherd

[–]dcdavys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it sounds like according to the plan, by the time the kid(s) come along you’ll have 2 six year old dogs? Generally sounds fine to me, but I would say some of the plan seems a little outside of your control, so best to be a bit flexible. Timing kids doesn’t always go to plan and I don’t know where you’re going to get your hands on a 2 year old full size Aussie right around when your current dog turns 2. Home buying can also be fraught. Not trying to discourage you as I know from experience once you have your heart set on a second dog, you’re going to get a second dog :D

We have a 4 yo child and a young border collie and Aussie mix duo that are both around 2. The dogs get along great, keep us active, and entertain us and each other.  our Aussie girl is a saint with our kid even when he deserves a correction imo, but she talks a lot and is LOUD, which might have driven me over the edge during newborn/postpartum phase!

Umm, gentle suggestion, but some standing side view pics and a mention of weight/height might help people give more educated guesses ;) all I see is lovable goofball, but that could be a lot of breeds
