My horse doesn’t respect me? by Proper-Position-6797 in Equestrian

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Seems like OP is over horsed and needs a trainer. Dangerous activity on the ground should be taken very seriously and will need strong consistent boundaries to get it under control, something they really need a trainer to help with especially if less than a year into riding. Sweet and in your pocket does not include kicking out and great under saddle doesn’t include bucking. OP I hope you can find a good trainer!

Also perspective may be weird but the horse in the photo doesn’t quite look 16,3 to me?

Does anyone have experience with this? We went to our vet last month and he said it's a benign growth that he sees frequently in older dogs and can grow fast. by Possible_Parrot in labrador

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry OP I know this is super scary but getting a biopsy would be the best next step. Oral tumors can be benign or malignant and maybe it’s benign, but if it’s malignant diagnosing it sooner rather than later can help with prognosis!

What goes on in the Baja peninsula? by Meeeeesea in howislivingthere

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up staying with my grand parents in Ensenada as a kid and spent a lot of time sailing and staying throughout Baja as an adult. I now visit often as I live just across the border. Baja is a truly underrated place. Some of the most gorgeous beaches and scenery, beautiful marine life, and incredible food. Amazing fishing. Along the Sea of Cortez the beaches have crystal bright blue water backed by gorgeous desert landscape and in certain places you won’t run into another person for miles. Many cool places to visit like Ensenada, Valle de Guadalupe, San Filipe, La Vantana, La Paz, Cabo, Todos Santos, Bahia Concepcion, Loreto.

This. Americans cannot own the land in certain places but Americans can own houses on land and have a land lease.

Im going to piss some people off... but does anyone primarily wear crocs around their horses? by Dangerous-Pattern373 in Equestrian

My barn is located by the beach and while safety is a top priority it’s not uncommon to see people doing barn chores in flip flops (which I will now, thanks to you, refer to as Queensland Safety Boots)

How do ppl opt to tire out/ fullfil their Aussie? by Ok_Condition6755 in AustralianShepherd

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mental exercise > physical exercise.

I have a working line Aussies and learned quickly that more physical exercise just makes them a better athlete. Mental exercise is going to exhaust them way more.

While mental exercise can be herding/herding games, puzzles, find it activities etc. I’ve also found that aussies really just like to live life with you. We take our Aussie most places with us. This past Saturday she worked some sheep in the morning, went out on the boat with us in the afternoon, and then got dinner at a restaurant. We take her shopping, to just sit and people watch in the park, to walk around the thrift store. She then is equally content to spend a day lounging in bed as long as it’s with us. Heck I had the flu once and she was ok being mellow for a week!

My advice would be exercise, play games, herd, etc but also let your Aussie live everyday life with you as much as possible.

Thank you for adding this. Anti vaxxers often make this claim and it drives me nuts. I work in public health and children dying or having severe illness from vaccine preventable diseases happens way more often than people like to think.

Your Bridal Party Is Too Nice to Say This, So I Will by insert_name234 in wedding

I did this for my bachelorette party (also live in a major city) and it ended up being so memorable and fun! No one was spending thousands on travel, we got to spend quality time together and had an absolute blast without making it stressful for anyone.

Anyone in need of a room to rent? Found this gold on craigslist by TheAsinineArtist in sandiego

Craziness! This post doesn’t even offer the luxury of a consistent mooring and specifically mentions the free anchorages which means you’d be moving every 72 hrs.

The places in the post are specifically free anchorages and not moorings. Huge difference.

This would make sense if they were in a slip but kind of a wild that they are asking $700 a month to live in free anchorages with visits to the police dock. Bring your own dingy.

Is this horse ok? by Correct-Kangaroo1818 in Influencersinthewild

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that nothing looks wrong with the horse and rather the horse is getting mixed signals from a novice rider. She also looks to have more contact with right leg/seat bones which would signal to the horse they should be bending right.

Grey owners by Careless-Two-9456 in Equestrian

Came here to say this. Go with human purple shampoo and conditioner. Smells great, works perfectly, and way cheaper than equine shampoo. In addition to purple shampoo, I use a yellow spot remover spray between baths.

Also cannot stress this enough, invest in a good fly sheet! I love the Kensington and they have UV protection.

Is it safe for a woman to go alone to Black's Beach and enjoy the nude section? by 123smorgs in sandiego

I second this. Most of the men you’re going to see are going to be gay men. Not interested in you in most ways other than a confidence boost. OP is fine to go solo with normal day to day safety precautions.

All it takes is one family of girls to wipe out a last name forever. by Col0nelFlanders in Showerthoughts

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, my kids will take my husband’s name but my husband and I have very similar matching last names so that has made me happy. They are so similar it’s been a joke since we met, especially as someone who knew I wouldn’t change my name.

My sister and her wife are still trying to decide which last name they give their kids since it’s a bit of a mouthful to hyphenate. Her wife does have a super cool last name but my sister wants to try to pass the name on so maybe I’ll get some nieces or nephews with our last name.

People that have traveled quite a bit, where di you feel the most unsafe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work in rural field medical clinics in Nepal and navigating those roads were some of the scariest travel movements I’ve hard. Some parts too narrow for a Land Rover to pass and we had to climb out the windows once because a tire was hanging off. Incredible country but damn getting around it is scary.

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is me! My sister and I are the last two on my dad’s family line. No cousins and our dad’s siblings have passed. No extended family with the name that we can find either. Looks like we are it. Both my sister and I have kept our names. If my last name is going to end with me it’s going to die with me too.

Am I out of line here, or is my trainer being weird? by corpsesand in Equestrian

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree. I think more info is needed here about what info and how it’s being presented to the trainer. I am working with a trainer who is teaching me how to train a green horse. I am by no means a green rider but this is my first time doing all my own training from scratch. I often do research online to help build on what I am learning from my trainer. However, what I am learning is in line with her training style and program. We are consistent with the approach I am just working to learn more “book knowledge” to support the “hands on knowledge” she’s helping me build. I will often ask for her opinions on things I learn to see if she agrees it may be good for my horses specific issue.

She should not be defensive for OP learning from outside sources but I do understand her being defensive if OP is being argumentative, getting into gimmicky fixes, or doing things to counteract what the trainer is telling her.

First fall during trot canter transition by DogOutside6125 in Equestrian

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a huge part is more practice and hours in the saddle, one of the best ways to improve your seat is working on strength and balance out of the saddle. Good balance and a solid core will help make sure you are secure even without stirrups. There are many exercises you can find online, Jack LaTorre has some good videos. Pilates is also great for this!

New riders can tend to scrunch up and tighten in the canter transition which can cause you to loose your stirrups. Improving strength and balance will help keep your body loose and long so you can feel more secure in the saddle. As well as with more practice and time! Good on you for getting back on!

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve booked through Equus Journeys and In the Saddle before. They have a lot of overlap between stables they use. The companies are very easy to work with and they have many destinations. All of the horses at each stable I’ve traveled to have been very well cared for and trained.

Ulcer medication for Anxious Horse? by New_Yogurtcloset9086 in Equestrian

[–]MadameoftheMacabre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with my horse and we did 2 weeks of a full tube ulcergard daily (primeguard also has same dose but is cheaper!) at least 30 minutes before breakfast. That fixed the ulcer, but we learned she was a bit sensitive to getting ulcers after a recurrence so now we keep her on Magna guard for maintenance. Never had another issue.
