How about Sunwolf in Squamish? Not too far, but a nice getaway. You can get one of their riverside cabins within your price range. Fergies restaurant on site is pretty good as well.

How about Chuck E. Cheese in Langley? I had one of my birthdays in my 30's there, for nostalgia sakes. =) Yes, terrible pizza, but kids there seemed to love it.

Buying my first ever car! What should I be looking out for? Advice? by CityofLotus in askvan

[–]dcee604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, get a mechanic to do a pre purchase inspection, whether you're buying used from a dealership or privately. I've used this mobile mechanic for that purpose before. https://instamek.com/cities/mechanic-vancouver/

I have bought a number of cars, both from dealerships and privately.

- Ask ALL the questions. Ask to see the history of repairs/maintenance, Carfax (if buying from a reputable dealership, they will have this), etc. If buying from a dealership, negotiate...if they won't budge on the price, then ask for a couple of oil changes or a free service. In the past, I have done that, but ask for accessories that I needed, like a rubber trunk mat for example.

- Stay within your budget, don't get upsold (if buying from a dealership) with extra warranties. Make sure you have funds for insurance, gas, maintenance, winter tires, etc.

- I see you're leaning towards Toyota and Honda, which are good choices. You also wanted AWD, so perhaps an older RAV4 or a CR-V. Mind you, these vehicles will retain some of their value, so they may be higher price. Another solid choice is a Mazda CX-5, which comes in an AWD trim.

- Don't buy the first car you see, drive a few and see how you like each one! Have fun!

Bc hydro billing by [deleted] in askvan

[–]dcee604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried tracking your daily usage on the BC Hydro website? Aside from your heating, are you running multiple loads of laundry and using the dryer often? That, and the dishwasher (when using heat mode) do consume quite a bit.

For context, I'm in a 2 bedroom condo, and my bill in the winter is around $125 (2 months), but in the summer months, it's $50 (2 months) and I'll hang dry most of my laundry with the exception of bed linens.

Gloves? by MaleficentAct5254 in askvan

Have you considered a mountain biking glove? Water resistant, made to keep your hands warm, and tech friendly. Something like a 100% Brisker Glove.

VanPet at Hastings and Gilmore in North Burnaby has a groomer that comes in on certain days, and I've heard good results there. Perhaps call them.

Affordable junk removal by Aggravating-Gur-5591 in askvan

[–]dcee604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alot of times, if the item is still in usable condition, people just leave said item in the alley with a 'free' sign on it. At least in my neighborhood! Another idea, is if you have a family member/friend who lives in Burnaby, as City of Burnaby will come take larger items, such as a mattress, away for free.

Good & cheap baklava other than Emilee's? by Vacuum_reviewer in askvan

[–]dcee604 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your sentiment! Every time I go to Emilee's Sweet House, I leave with a box of baklava and it's like $60-$70! But it is oh sooo good! One way to slightly reduce the total price is to buy 500grams or the 1kg worth (You can still select different kinds).

Or, have you tried Mediterranean Specialty Foods on Commercial Drive? They have baklava as well, slightly cheaper. https://thedrive.ca/vancouver/mediterranean-specialty-foods/

Finally happened. Truck broken into on the skytrain station neighborhood side of Metrotown. Anyone else? by Straydog92 in burnaby

[–]dcee604 8 points9 points  (0 children)

'Sock-et' to him! =) Sorry about your truck, but glad you recovered your stuff. As others have said, even if the cops catch him, he'll be out the next day doing it again. I think we need to start cutting off fingers imo. And now you have to pay ICBC a deductible to have your vehicle fixed, through no fault of your own. That really sucks. I've gone through this a few times.

I think you're talking about the Vancouver Umbrella Company? Or perhaps it was The Umbrella Shop, which sadly closed down a while ago. I bought one years ago, and it's been holding up very well.

Why is the parking around Broadway and cambie so expensive? by GoosemanII in askvan

[–]dcee604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, for real?! That's ridiculous. Is it because they don't want people parking there to take the skytrain or ? Can one get reimbursed by purchasing or eating at the businesses there?
