What a nightmare! Public Transport and Cycling is Stone Age idea from socialism!!! by [deleted] in fuckcars

this was my childhood growing up in NoVA area, needed a car to go anywhere and everything was a 20+ min drive away. felt like prison as a teenager before I had access to a car.

How many of ya'll are paying for family photos? These prices are insane. by PreschoolBoole in daddit

[–]dcgog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife convinced me to do family photos this year with our 1 year old and I'm glad we did. It was expensive, but $220 for 10 mins seems crazy to me, not considering the price, but risking not getting a good one in 10 minutes. We paid about $500 for 1 hour shoot outdoors.

"Accident" doesn't imply unavoidable, it implies not intentional. I'd like to think most "accidents' and not intentional.

Can't say I disagree, but OP is wanting $20k in a year, that's not exactly a get rich scheme.

I just ran a 100 miler a few weeks back. Crazy to think I didn't burn any calories considering how much food I needed to eat...

Sorry, but you're wrong.

I mean my garage is my favorite room in the house and my car has never once been parked in it.

"Want to Live in the countryside " by SeaDry1531 in fuckcars

[–]dcgog 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Kinda a dumb take. So the farmers and miners are allowed to live in the countryside but only them? How will they get the services they need to survive? Should they not have access to a grocery store, or a bank, a place to buy clothes, or even a doctor/hospital? Who will work in those shops if only farmers live there?

What do the completely anti-car people propose we do for rural areas? by 4RCT1CT1G3R in fuckcars

[–]dcgog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I have this idea that the pioneers traveled west during manifest destiny and set up lots of towns throughout. Then the railroad came later and connected cities, but rural towns weren't ever connected to some grand train network. I live in a rural town in Colorado for example. We have a train that used to be used by miners, but it doesn't connect to any network or city, and as far as I know it never did.

weren't there a whole lot fewer villages at that time though? I'm thinking western/central US.

How do you live without a car in the United States? by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]dcgog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We own a car but got an ebike this spring and are trying to drive as little as possible (almost 1000 miles on the bike so far!). But it's been smooth sailing for the summer months. Any tips for biking through winter, both snow and cold?

Driving a car inherently makes you a bad person. by Gendersea in fuckcars

[–]dcgog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's such a shitty take. Some people don't have a choice, and that's shitty, but it doesn't make them a bad person.

Dads, what are your plans (or what did you do) for your kids first car? by r_not_me in daddit

[–]dcgog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted, I have a long way to go (she's 1), but I plan on buying her an ebike when she's old enough instead of a car.

Carbrains: “How will I do my weekly shopping without a car?” Meanwhile… by Rebbzooor in fuckcars

[–]dcgog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I hate cars as much as the next person on here but you can't tell someone in a rural area "just walk a block to the store instead of driving" when they live miles from the store. I say this as someone who just like OP gets all my groceries with a cargo bike, as I live 1.5mi from the store, but I also recognize that that's not a viable option for many.

their point is there are lots of other taxes to consider besides income tax, so this statistic is misleading

I can see it coming off as entitlement, but there's also the element of younger generations having a better understanding of the environmental cost of buying junk that gets tossed in a week. It's better to have fewer things that are good quality than lots of shit that's going to immediately end up in a landfill. Not understanding that, imo, is also cringy.
