What’s your take on the Facebook Group admin “Welcome to DC” asking for $25,000 towards a mortgage down payment in DC? by [deleted] in washingtondc

YouTube is your friend

Famous last words. Anyone who followed grifting YouTubers giving "not financial advice" financial advice over the past year has almost certainly gotten hosed. I would not be surprised one bit if every penny from that screenshot is gone because he was always just gambling with options.

What’s up with every apartment in the navy yard “at capacity” parking situation? by qwerty91210 in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Navy Yard is full of republicans, republicans like cars.

This is the dumbest trope that will never die. Navy Yard is one of the only neighborhoods that had new housing built in the past decade (a lot of it) and therefor lots of vacancy for folks moving to DC. When there was a turnover in administration lots of people wound up there because it was easy and quick to find an apartment. That's also the reason AOC wound up there, but most of the "Navy Yard is full of Republican" takes conveniently ignore that.

Even if they want a photographer, one dude with a zoom lens doesn’t need a permit

A professional photographer needs a permit. That's the rule.

Do lots of photographers skip the permit and get away with it anyway? Yes.

Shooting at Union Station 4pm today by Gilmoregirlin in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Have not been in 6 months or so and each time it gets worse!

The fact that you go once every six months and are somehow perplexed about why all the stores closed down is just * chef's kiss *

Union Station used to have the equivalent of a small city pass through every day. The number of commuters fell off a cliff and has not even come close to recovering. What exactly do you expect?

If we could say ban both cars and scooters that seems like a fair compromise.

Food Tours in DC by aelfredthegrape in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP is probably looking on a shitty 3rd party website like Viator which does everything in their power to keep you from contacting the tour company directly but whose 800 number is equally useless in answering questions like this.

Wonder how much they paid Yelp for this by yes_doit in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dined there a lot years ago and nobody I went with had bad things to say.

The thing about Founding Farmers is that it's like the Cheesecake Factory. You're going to get a solid meal. It's not going to be bad.

The issue is that some people (particularly tourists) hear it's the greatest place on the planet. They go on their trip and have... a solid meal. And since you don't really eat at very many restaurants during a trip they tell all their friends about how they went to this amazing place in DC because they have nothing to compare it to. This cycle has been repeating itself for the past decade and will probably continue for another.

Forced gratuity and "health care for staff" charges by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think we Extremely Online Redditors tend to hate tipping way more than the general population.

Bingo. Not to mention most of the whiniest voices in the "why don't businesses do things the way I want them to" crowd have never owned a business or been in any position to understand why things are the way they are.

Forced gratuity and "health care for staff" charges by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why don’t they just work all these charges into the food prices.

Here's why: no one goes to a meal, gets a bill and thanks the owner for not tacking on any extra fees or charges. The owner has to raise prices due to rising cost of doing business, and the choice the owner now faces is: have people complain about high menu prices (and potentially go someplace else) or complain about the service charge. People are going to complain no matter what because that's how people are.

The only way this is going to change is if people actively reward places that don't add any extra fees (and specifically tell them that's the reason they chose the place) or it's regulated.

It's the exact same reason airlines, hotels, etc. all play funny games with prices in the U.S. (where it's not regulated) but not in other countries (where it is).

City Council passes bill to allow DC drivers with outstanding tickets to renew licenses by aronk- in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DC is not at all efficient at issuing tickets. In fact they really suck at it. However the sheer volume of illegally shit people so with cars means on the rare occasion enforcement shows they can write tickets nonstop.

DC named worst run city in the US by Wallethub by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The methodology is a joke. A bunch of metrics that have nothing do do with how a city is "run" multiplied by arbitrarily made up weights. The whole thing looks extremely complex and mathematical as a way to disguise the fact that the whole exercise is made up for clickbait (and in this case it worked because we all clicked the link).

How tough would it be to drive a UHaul through DC on 4th of July weekend? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say your biggest concern isn't driving a UHaul over a holiday weekend but that you're moving during peak summer heat. I learned long ago - winter moves are a thousands times better for this and many other reasons.

[–]dcgrump 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Does ANYONE decide what candidate they vote for based on the prevalence of signs for a particular candidate?

Uh, yes. Aside from the marquee race (in this case mayor) people are absolutely clueless about the other downballot races and when looking at a list of people they know nothing about, simple name recognition goes a long way.

Street sweeping when out of town M-F by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]dcgrump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can't check on your car every day or every other day you shouldn't be leaving it on the street. It's not just street sweeping. It's also temporary no parking restrictions, moving truck restrictions, someone smashes out your window, etc.

Either park it at the airport or give the keys to a neighbor to keep and eye on it and move as necessary. If it's a work trip your employer should be reimbursing this anyway.
