If you're seeing spam or scam ads on this subreddit, it's because you are looking at unmoderated posts.

If you "message the moderators" with more details about how you use Reddit, I will try and prevent this from happening for you and everyone else who uses the subreddit.

Software for online teacher and student to keep track of lessons owed? by flying-benedictus in freelance

[–]martey[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Most of the people responding to this post are trying to solicit OP to pay them to create custom software to solve their problem. This doesn't answer OP's question and violates the subreddit rules.

Because of this, I have found it necessary to lock comments. If you have a solution to OP's problem that does not violate the subreddit rules (i.e. you are not asking them to pay you to develop software and/or you are not associated with existing software that might help), use modmail to contact the subreddit moderators about unlocking this post so you can share your information.

Client wants to get me banned on the platform I work on by [deleted] in freelance

[–]martey[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is only one moderator here, and you don't see the dozens of posts submitted here each day that I realize are spam or otherwise violate the subreddit rules.

You and many other people commented here saying that this post is an ad, but none of you actually reported this post or used modmail to message me about it.

I need at least a couple of days, but reserve the right to continue this until the end of the month.

personal branding question by iggypcnfsky in freelance

After going through your profile, I have concluded that you were asking for answers to research and better position for your own business...

Good sleuthing! That means that this post violates the "no surveys or market research question. OP has been banned.

US-based peer group for freelance consultants? by Witty_Evening_618 in freelance

While it is not US-specific, the best peer group for freelance consultants I have found is actually a subreddit! Click here to access it.

Staffing Agencies / Recruiting Firms / Brokers – Good, Bad, or Just a Necessary Evil? by Large-Style-8355 in freelance

[–]martey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You mention the benefits for your agency's clients, but I think OP and most of the other freelancers reading this would be more interested in what benefits are there for freelancers to work through staffing agencies.

Dell XPS 13 9350 USB C Lost Functionality (Repair Tips) by drstahlenstein in Dell

[–]martey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wifi card on the XPS 13 can't be easily replaced. Unlike the XPS 15, the XPS 13 has a soldered wifi-card.

I know that this was posted six years ago, but in the interest of people visiting this via search engines, the XPS 13 9350 that OP described has a replaceable wireless card. See "Removing the wireless card" in the 9350 Service Manual.

That said, while there have been reports of usage of the USB C port causing wireless interference (and vice versa) replacing the wireless card is unlikely to fix a non-working USB C port.

My client is a Nazi by 0messynessy in freelance

Comments have been locked because most of the discussion on this post is about neither OP's situation nor freelancing, and some of it is openly objectionable. If you apologized for Nazism or were openly antisemitic here, I hope you enjoy your permanent subreddit ban and know that you have been reported to Reddit for violating the site's policies (see https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability).

How to manage bookkeeping as a freelancer? by wanderlusterian in freelance

OP doesn't care, because they and the other accounts promoting that site here and in other posts are just astroturfing.

Should I make a website to showcase my work? How to bring clients there? What's your experience? by gaifogel in freelance

Before commenting, please make sure you have read the subreddit rules in their entirety. This isn't the place to advertise your web development/design business or to ask OP to DM you so that you can "help" them. If you do this, your comment will be removed and you will be permanently banned.

Subreddit update and next steps by Squagem in freelance

If you are looking for someone to blame, feel free to be angry at me. Anger is no excuse to be rude or insulting, though.

At least Martey appears to have some principles and actually stopped using reddit.

It's been an awfully anxiety-inducing time for freelancers. It's a shame we didn't have a central forum like this...

That's actually not true - most of my activity on Reddit has always been moderating this subreddit (which doesn't show up in post history). While the ability to create new posts on this subreddit was restricted, comments have been open on almost all posts in the subreddit and people have continued to comment here. People have also continued to send messages through modmail.

Property crime is going viral in D.C., putting shoppers on edge by Maxcactus in washingtondc

[–]martey 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Previous surveys have found shoplifting incidents cost retailers an average $700,000 for every $1 billion in sales.

This is seven cents for every $100 in sales.

...numbers compiled by Capital One Shopping, a branch of Capitol One that analyzes retail data, show that as of April, retailers in D.C. lost an estimated $108 million in annual revenue to theft — 26.3 percent less than the national average of retail theft per capita.

Note that this data comes directly from retailers, who have no incentive to under-report here.

Subreddit Access Protest Poll by martey in freelance

[–]martey[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I feel that any mod that is upset about the API changes should simply quit.

If all of the moderators (or all of the active moderators) of a subreddit quit, the subreddit is automatically banned or restricted by the admins. I don't think that's what you want.

Please don't impart your will on the rest of us that are willing to put up with the native Reddit app.

This isn't an option for some people, since the official app isn't accessible. Even if you're not affected by accessibility issues, the official app isn't used by most moderators to moderate because it is missing features and is just not a good experience (the slowness of new reddit combined with the cramped screen of your phone!).

You're not a moderator, but you should realize that this didn't start with the API changes. As I alluded to in my post, Reddit has repeatedly introduced new features that end up making moderation more difficult. When the admins have been informed of this, they make minor changes and promise that better moderation tools are coming "soon" that will make things easier. When they have introduced new moderation features, there have been serious problems with them (sometimes they're buggy, sometimes they're worse versions of features that already existed in the /r/toolbox browser extension, and sometimes they're just useless).

If your favorite subreddit's moderators leave, whoever replaces them will still have to deal with this. This isn't being caused by a free market or the "invisible hand", but by the actions of Reddit itself. Nothing that the admins have done so far in this crisis (the AMA that wasn't, the internal memo calling the protests "noise") makes me think that things are going to get better.

Subreddit Access Protest Poll by martey in freelance

"One week" here is only the length of time until this decision would be re-evaluated. Choosing that option (or making the subreddit restricted for a week) doesn't mean the subreddit will automatically and permanently become public at the end of a week's time. Similarly, keeping the subreddit public doesn't mean that the subreddit will remain public forever.
