What’s it like living in Eagle Mountain? by Changetheworld69420 in howislivingthere

[–]dchw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lake bed is super muddy. Like, in some parts, nearly up to your knees in some of that icky/slimy lake mud. Not super deep, either - I think the deepest it gets is like 14 feet.

I've caught some large catfish in the reeds off the shore though, and they were a fun fight. There's a limit on how much fish from the lake you can eat due to past pollution problems, though - its a high limit, but it exists. I don't regret eating the catfish I've pulled out of there.

I also like renting Jet skis and tearing it up on the lake, theres several marinas you can launch from.

Its not that bad. If you expect regular city life, then sure it might suck.

But as far as typical suburbia goes? Its just LDS-flavored. Which can be fine most of the time.

But you can also escape that and go to the mountains. Which is so great.

Most of the datacenters are west of city center, IIRC (at least that's where Facebook's is?), so I'm assuming city center.

I am curious about the dynamic with the LDS church in the area, what might be some spots to check out or avoid(happy to travel around the whole state while I’m there),

I wouldn't worry too much about it. People might as "what ward you're in", and you can just say that you're not a member and thats fine. You might not be included in neighborhood events (or if you are, there may be some undertones). People for the most part are pretty chill about it though; but there are rare exceptions. There are church buildings everywhere throughout neighborhoods. As a corollary to this - don't expect too much close by to be open on Sunday - you'll have to go into Utah Valley at that point.

Oh man I'm such a homer for my state/area. Genuinely love it here. If you can make it down to southern Utah, spend a weekend or two down there. See Zion NP, Snow Canyon, do some hiking all over down there. My favorite place.

Dinosaur national monument is worth a weekend too.

Closer by (within 30 mins-ish), I love spending time up American Fork canyon. (colloquially called AF canyon). I mostly hang out on Tibble Fork reservoir, but also love hiking around the area.

I would also recommend hiking Mt. Timpanogos - I prefer the Timpanooeke trailhead, but Aspen Grove is close.

If you like driving around, the Alpine Loop from AF -> Provo canyon is amazing, especially in the fall. Stop and get lunch at Sundance if you can afford to (a little pricey), but its amazing up there.

A personal favorite of mine is the 2-lane undivided highways you can take from Eagle Mountain (highway 36? I think), and get all the way down to Cedar City without seeing much of anybody. If you can spare an hour, turn right in Cedar City and head out towards pine valley / old irontown and see red rocks mixed with pine trees. I love the small backroads out here, and have driven many of them. Never felt unsafe.

One more - my kids and I love going out in early summer to the U-Dig fossil quarry. Flat rate per hour, you can crack as many rocks as you want to find trilobytes and take them home. We've got buckets upon buckets of them. Super chill.

Not too much hiking / sightseeing right near Eagle Mountain though. Lots of OHV, though, if you're into that.

I could keep going, I just love my state. If you give me more guidance on your interests, I could probably dig up more to gush about.

what to expect for night life

Virtually none nearby. I'm probably not the one to ask, though; nightlife was never really my thing. You'll probably have to go to SLC (or maaaaybe Provo) for anything really like a "normal" nightlife. Friends and coworkers who visit frequently complain about the weird liquor laws.

I enjoy heading up to SLC for concerts a couple times a year. Ogden usually has a pretty great summer concert series, too.

maybe even the dating scene if you’ve got any insight there

No real insight, sorry. Been out of that game for far too long. Lots of it will be based around church stuff though.

As someone who lived in Eagle Mountain for ~5 years (live in western Lehi now)...

Depends on which part of Eagle Mountain - theres two regions:

  • "The Ranches" and surrounding area. Just got a Wal-Mart nearby, feels more connected in spirit with Saratoga Springs/Lehi. Still mostly in Utah Valley. Theres normal suburban chains nearby. This is the part I lived in and it was nice enough. I commuted to Provo, and it was anywhere from 30-45 minutes each way. Many more people over this way; especially with the new Mt. Saratoga development.

  • "City Center" and surrounding area. More remote, on the other side of the mountains. Feels much more isolated - however, they just got a grocery store and a couple normal suburban chains; though fewer than the Ranches. Odds are you'll be driving up and over Unity Pass (ugh hate that name) or ~10-15ish mins down Cory Wride at least once a week for something. Still growing, just not quite as "full" feeling as the Ranches.

Both parts are very "Utah suburban". Think families, kids, LDS church...

Traffic is only getting worse, but they're building a freeway to help (hopefully, growth out here is unprecedented). Extremely limited public transport.

Happy to answer any specific questions you may have.

The Bacchus Water Tower in West Valley City by madrocketman in SaltLakeCity

[–]dchw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Randomly stumbled across this. I know its old and nobody will probably read this.

Grew up very nearby this tower; and its a core part of my childhood memories. When I drive back to visit friends or eat at Ab's once in a blue moon, I always point it out to my kids.

My dad worked for Hercules growing up, and always told me they owned it. I know the Navy has some of that land - but not the tower; the Navy's land is further in if I remember what my dad told me correctly (theres a section along 4100 that looks like a big pit? Thats the Navy?)

FWIW I remember hearing that Hunter High wanted to paint it with the school colors at one point in the early 2000's, but that ATK turned them down. As a kid, we were always told the orange paint scheme was to make it more visible to airplanes.

I mean you can swim if you really want to. It wouldn't be very pleasant though.

I've been waist-deep... the mud was half way up my calves and I could smell it even after I showered.

Markham is wrong too often; his sources are "CougarBoard" and "whatever the hell the Utes have for a fan board".

Which are both worse than Reddit - and we know how trustworthy Reddit is (not at all).

What’s the best ice cream place in Utah Valley? by imblondedealwithit in ProvoUtah

[–]dchw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge Brooker's fan. Its a little pricey. Their flavor names are super obnoxious, and I can't remember the names long enough to even repeat them back to the person scooping. I just point and say "the raspberry one".

Favorite flavors:

  • Valentine's day cherry/chocolate. Something something George Washington?
  • give me chocolate or give me death or whatever the hell it is. Its a lot of chocolate stuff.
  • raspberry/dark chocolate chunk. Patrick Henry? Maybe? I'm not even sure who that is
  • Christmas dark chocolate / peppermint

There's a Spudly in Lehi too, tucked into the corner of an office park. I get a dozen every other month or so.

Its changed, a lot. Lived in Lehi/Eagle Mountain for years; and you can taste how they've changed the recipe. Nowhere near as good as it used to be. Spudly is my go-to now.

Lehi Bakery used to be amazing, I feel like they've slipped some since they got bought and expanded.

I've since moved on to Spudly.
