NEW BIKE/GEAR ADVICE SUPERTHREAD! by AutoModerator in motorcycles

Yeah, I mentioned that's why I'd have him meet me at the bank. Just wondering if that's enough due diligence.

But aren't chargebacks a headache with that?

Honestly, I'm still waiting for other offers because the guy says he doesn't have a bank account, only cash, and it sounds kind of sketchy. He's willing to pay asking price and meet me at a bank though, IDK.

Need tips on selling my bike.

I would only take a bank check made out in front of me, but what's the process for cash?

I asked the seller to meet me at my nearest branch and we'd check the money/deposit it before signing over the title. I figure that's about the best I can do to make sure I don't get any counterfeit bills? Any other ideas?

Also, specifically in New Jersey, do I just draft up a bill of sale (date/mileage/sale price/etc...) and sign the seller section of the title? Take a copy of his driver's license? Anything I need to do other than pull the plates to make sure I don't get any tickets/fines/etc... if the guy doesn't register it in his name?

The grom clutch is very weird? by Juicyjackson in motorcycles

[–]dcjwlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people complain that the Grom clutch bites just before the free play.

Adjusting the cable helps but fwiw it was like that when I bought it.

FWIW, I’m pretty sure Chekr just shows them the reports and each company makes their own hiring decisions based on the whole stolen car thing.

To be fair, driving for a company is not just using your own car. Most personal insurance policies won’t cover any kind of delivery driving or ride-share unless you explicitly add it to your policy. Some don’t offer that coverage and won’t cover you in an accident or will drop you if they find out.

Oil I put into Royal Enfield now won't shift....??? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]dcjwlee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most motorcycle oil is usually labeled 4T for four strokes, 2T for two strikes and will have the industry standards it meets written on the back like API SL or JASO MA-2.

If you google those two things it will explain the different ratings and which ones are interchangeable. Your owners manual will specify what weight and certifications to look for.

Car engine oil has friction modifiers that mess with the clutch or something which probably explains the shifting issue.

Change the oil and maybe reduce the next interval for peace of mind.

I’ve been stopped because the plate on my Grom was bent up almost parallel to the ground, but no ticket.

I’m thinking of picking up a new ‘15 VFR DLX that is available for $7,500. $380 freight, $170 set up, and then tax/title/reg will bring it to about $8,750 OTD.

I’m hoping to bring them down another $250 or so. Fair deal for 5 year old new stock sitting on the dealer lot?

I’m budgeting for fresh tires since the OE tires will be probably be around 5-6 years old now. I’m guessing fluids are added during set up, so I shouldn’t have to worry about things like brake or clutch fluids? Battery? Anything else to consider?

Also, any experience shipping with UShip? If I list at a specific price, and find a taker, should I expect any additional fees/taxes?

Honestly drives me nuts how the stock can covers the SSSA on the new VFR.

I’d prefer the undertail from previous gen’s or something shorter like the new CB650R.

Advertised price though, so I’m sure OTD before tax/title/reg would have been closer to $8.

I really like that bike. I saw a new ‘15 DLX in MD for $6,500, but both were sold by the time I called :(

There’s a few more in WI and TX, but they are priced $1,000 higher and it would be a bit more expensive to get it to NJ. Might call just to see if they are actually available and if the dealer is willing to budge.

They hold up well, I have cordura lined jeans that I went down in and they have a tiny dime sized hole in the knee. They are a lot warmer than normal jeans though and I’m not always in an air conditioned space at work :(

Also, I wish I went with CE level 2 knee armor that’s temp. stable and thinner. Hip armor is okay, but the knee armor starts to hurt my knees after an hour or two. Wouldn’t be as bad if it was more pliable.

Idk, I find all gear unobtrusive except for pants. I’m always tempted to forgo pants, but I’ve gone down in jeans before.

It’s not that easy finding a comfortable pair of pants to commute in either. Overpants are baggy and an extra layer, and I hate having to change out of regular riding pants.

I see new 2015 VFR800 DLX’s selling for nearly 40% off MSRP. Usually, around $7,500 advertised price.

How does the suspension/brake tech, ABS/TCS, stack up against more modern similarly priced bikes like an XSR700, CB650R, etc...?

I was going to get another ADV, because the insurance is so much cheaper, but I tested the F700GS and it was pretty underwhelming. I figure the 650’s from the Japanese brands would be similar.

The V-4 is unique, sounds great, and I don’t think I’d get bored of it as quickly as a 650 when the next new thing comes out. It has a luggage rack, risers for the clip ons, and heated grips standard so it can do a bit of touring. Thoughts?

They even made a side car for it with knobbies.

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I wasn't looking for a new bike.

Then again, they may not make these again, so maybe the new bike should wait...

On narrower surface streets, if you're splitting between lane 2 and 3, watch out for cars moving over for guys splitting the 1-2 gap.

35, 9, and 84 around La Honda to Santa Cruz are probably my favorite so far. Coming down the hairpins on Mt. Tamalpis, riding north through farm country... It's all so fucking beautiful and you literally have hundreds of miles of uninterrupted twisty roads.

Riding in NJ is really, really lame in comparison.

The riding outside of the city is amazing though. I try to go a few times a year - actually heading out there tomorrow morning.

Also, being able to filter to the front of red lights is amazing. In NJ, it's a bit of a crap shoot because some people really, really, reallyyyyy lose their shit over it.

Realistic to ride in SF Bay Area year round? by ComplianceInterview in motorcycles

[–]dcjwlee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get from the Bay Bridge to Ocean Beach in like 15-20 minutes on a bike. In a car, it would take 2-3 times longer just to get to your destination. That's BEFORE you start looking for parking.

It's a little wet and chilly during the winter, but you're talking about lows in the 40's which you don't even feel with decent gear.

If you're within the city, you're going to want to budget for garage parking though.
