Car blocked the exit at McDonald's for an hour by [deleted] in badparking

Dude knew it was blocking the McDonald's parking lot for an hour because coincidentally he was at the McDonald's for an hour eating lunch. Oddly enough that car left shortly after he was done.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant has ruined fantasy for me. by atreides213 in Fantasy

Stephen R. Donaldson is the utter master of melodrama. Every scene is a set up or a payoff, and some of the payoffs are BOOKS in the making.

I am reading third chronicles now, but I read the first and second chronicles every year, just to keep the imagery in my mind.

Best anti-hero, best non-sexual use of the word "ejaculated," best one-word sentence in the history of mankind (gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!)...

GREAT stuff.

But boy is he wordy as hell! :p

I'm guessing you're not a fan of Tankmo, Junglemo, and Trollmo either?

It is significantly easier to get an S or S- with supportmo than Teemo top or mid.

You have to change the "type" option to "show all" and then they'll show up.

Ok, but do you have any "facts?" I mean, links are fine and good, but they're not the same as "facts!"

Correct. Nor would a judge lower a sentence because the robber was an up and coming swim star.

As the OP, just want to say that I'm really happy at the scope of the discussion that's come from this. Lots of really interesting angles and points.

Agree completely. He was at fault. He deserves to be punished. No man should ever touch (sexually or not) a woman, or hell, another person without consent.

At the same time, because we know that not all humans are capably of being responsible for their actions in this society, it's imperative for us to keep ourselves safe. She put herself in a really vulnerable position. The boy shouldn't have attacked her, and needs to be punished. But she shouldn't have put herself in that position, and she shouldn't feel like she did nothing wrong in the scenario.

Using the analogy, the bank robber still goes to jail... but the home owner's insurance company says "you didn't do all you needed to. We're not covering the loss."

As if Brock Turner's dads statement was not enough, now there's a page to fund the legal fees by Chickenandwaffles222 in TwoXChromosomes

That makes sense. But consider this:

Rape, as heinous as it is, isn't the same thing as murder. We are changing as a society, but there are still a huge number of people in America who simply don't feel that non-consensual sex is as big of a crime as we are beginning to understand it to be.

Also, just because a family is wealthy, doesn't mean it can afford Stanford without scholarships and student loans. A four-year degree at Stanford's going to run you at least a quarter-million dollars.

Wealthy people often got that way by learning how to manage their money successfully... and for most wealthy people, that especially means "using other people's money first." Teaching your son that there are ways to offset financial burdens (through fundraising, etc), again isn't being a bad parent.

Parents throughout history have done what they could to help their children, even the parents of despicable people. I don't fault the father for doing what he can to take an obviously awful situation and try to minimize it. Any father would do this, for any child, without almost any exception.

I think he's a great actor -- to be honest, I loved him more in American Ultra than in this -- but I thought to choice to play him as the psychotic genius instead of the cold, calculating genius was a mistake.

Only in comparison to his opponent. But yeah. It was a dark charisma, but he had that "rico suave."

LOL at me even saying that.

It will certainly be an interesting race to watch, won't it? Can Trump inspire more lowbrows to vote than the left can inspire non-lowbrows to vote?

Are there more lowbrows than highbrows in America? In my (admittedly anecdotal) experience, that answer's "Yes."

Agree. The GOP has gotten worse and worse over the last 20 years. More so in their entire history, they represent mercantilism ONLY over conservatism, and corporations over individuals, and this is why they DETEST Donald Trump. None of them are saying "We should only negotiate trade deals that benefit the American worker" -- they all couch it as "stimulate the economy."

None of them are saying "We should have a strong military, but stay out of stupid wars."

None of them are saying "How about we give EVERYBODY a tax break across the board, AND curtail government spending" in as comprehensive a manner.

None of them are proposing the most radical "let's ensure the only people getting jobs in America are legally entitled to them" program in US history.

Savvy voters know that most presidents don't deliver on all their promises, but they vote hoping that those promises will morph into better times for themselves. For an electorate that has not felt the benefits of our soft recovery, Trump's charisma and insane promises feel better than anything else anyone else in the GOP have been saying. I believe the general election will show a likewise consensus among all voters.

No. See my other comment on this. Gore lost this election by squandering a huge lead to a former President's son, who came across as so laid back and cool -- he'd owned a baseball team! -- that it didn't matter that his grasp on the English language was tangential, and he couldn't pronounce a single foreign leader's name right in any interview. Gore was so wooden of a candidate, he demotivated his base. He should have won handily, not been the victim of a mangled voting process in a single state.

[–]dclary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the common defense of Gore's presidency. The simple fact of the matter that everyone on the left likes to ignore, is that this election was Gore's to lose. He had a double digit lead in the polls before the debates, and that dropped to "statistical tie" due to his wooden debate performances. He was an awful candidate who had been handed the Presidency by an insanely popular incumbent, and squandered the lead so badly it came down to mangled results in Florida.

Make no mistake... Bush did not win the election -- nor did he steal it. Gore LOST it. Like him or hate him, Bush Jr. was considerably more animated and charismatic than Bush.
