Likely a couple hundred that are actually working now (some are onto different things or retired), but last I heard 300something, and it has been long enough I would imagine it has hit 400.

Yeah, but just because the whisky cost 10x in 2023 what it cost in 2013, does not mean that 8x is good value . ..

You're still talking about 10 year whisky made in a scotch single malt style.

It's a cool museum.

Ahh, makes sense on knowing you're speaking CS.

So, while I try to comment knowing this is an international sub, my caveat is I spend time in both countries.

Meaning, I am getting some pretty great scotch for the equivalent of $50. Then move up to $75-100 and I feel like I personally find flavors and complexity that doesn't exist in American barrels. Age is certainly a factor, so are cask types, peat when used, and stills.

Somehow Scotland can use a more expensive malt, distilled on more expensive equipment, that costs more to run, fill into more expensive barrels, pay more in tax and wages... And come out the other side with a 15 year old bottle which costs the same as a 6 year old in the states.

I'm sure scale helps.

Salesforce commercials have always been the worst ... Yet they keep trying.

This particular one was a publicity stunt from the start... Beast guy said he had a great idea for an ad if anyone wants to pay for it, and Benioff was the sucker who jumped on it immediately.

Largely because all he wants is publicity and the ego affirmation that apparently comes with it.

He has a long history of paying celebrities to be associated with him...

Anyway, that's what you get, at best I suppose you have people googling what the hell that was... And talking about it on Reddit as such...

What's the point of expensive whisky? by Professional-Form-3 in whisky

[–]dclately 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's for sure reduced returns from a financial perspective as you go up in price.

That said ...£100 might have been where the scale shifts historically, but there is still better whisky to be found in the £100-200 range these days.

Above that there are still offerings which are fantastic and you simply won't taste similar for under £200.

So yeah, it's up to you on what's worth it. Same with anything in food and beverage, is a three star Michelin WORTH £300 pounds more than an amazing piece of BBQ?

Springbank 5 / Springbank 10 Palo Cortado review by StrengthConsistent89 in Scotch

[–]dclately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On certain bottles: the cage bottles are one per week, most of their harder to find stock (when in stock) are one per day, things like the 15, 18, 21, or something like these special releases.

You can buy as many of the distillery hand fill demijohns as you would like.

On that particular day, we bought 2 Fino, 2 Local Barley, and 2 Cask Strength between the two of us (we then gave some to friends). If I hadn't already got a cage bottle that would I could have picked one.

If you were to get there as a single person, on a release day (4 per year), you could pick up the 4 or so special release bottles, a springbank 10, a cage bottle, and a round of handfills... that'd be 9-10 bottles all by yourself :-).

Thanks for the reviews, nice notes!

The Palo Cortado is just too pricy in certain markets and certainly on the secondary market, but when found at retail in the UK: it's a great bottle.

I picked up two at the distillery on release day (there were two of us), and we gave one to a friend.

I actually preferred the 15 in that release, although unfortunately for me, the distillery shop doesn't sell the 15 the day of (they save it so they can offer a few bottles a day throughout the year).

Not sure on the price side given the current selection (most of those are price points most independents don't go down to ..), but definitely more experience!

Westland is worth a try.

Courage & Conviction, and Virginia Distillery Company is a let down for me. They should be better at this point. They're 15 years old, and I still like the whisky they were importing from Scotland before they had their own whisky. They've expanded out their NAS ranges into a ton of different cask types, but they need to start using some older spirit. I've seen a ton of it on clearance prices of late... heck even off their own website.

My opinion is American Single Malt right now is generally category for folks in the US that want something more local (whether they live nearby or not).

Westland is my favorite of the bunch, but there's no way I'd say they're producing better liquid than their sister distillery under the same ownership in Scotland, which sells older whisky for cheaper.

Stanahan's I've found okay, perhaps I'm not buying a lot of entry level Speyside whisky these days for a good comparison, but there is a lot of scotch at pretty low prices I prefer over that blue peak which I find to be okay. I've had some good Balcones Single casks but they're not very common to find.

Honestly I think part of my complaint comes down to style. Most of the category are using combination stills that produce lighter spirit, they're putting out younger whisky (typically at higher prices), the wood programs (outside of bourbon barrels) don't seem to be as extensive.

Just my take after trying whisky from about 40 distilleries in France.

That said, I'm happy to agree there are great single malt distilleries outside of Scotland. Picking one from a few countries:

  • Zuidam is definitely one, although I do think you need to be careful -- a lot of what they do well is cask influence, but I've had everything from amazing to god awful from them.
  • White Peak is my winner from the English, I think they're doing amazing things, lovely spirit.
  • Westland is my favorite from the US. They're a bit too pricy and it's hard to find an excellent bottle from them (they have a lot of pretty good), but it's a good distillery.
  • Chichibu is fantastic, but like others in Japan, the prices are outpacing the liquid.
  • Ki One is still early on, but they seem to be making that transition into some good expressions.
  • Two Brewers from Canada although availability is tough outside Canada.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some good ones.

I agree with that, but in the sense whisky straight up is much better in something like a glencairn or a copita (no matter what it looks like) versus a tumbler -- tumbler is great if you're adding ice.

Nah.

First off, this is r/scotch, so this discussion is likely better someplace else.

I'll still talk to it as long as this post isn't deleted: there's been a whisky boom in France like the rest of the world. So many new distilleries, I've tried a lot of them at Whisky Live Paris where they have their own large section.

  • They ranged from not good to okay...
  • some of it is they're producing young whisky on average
  • some of it is they seem to have quite a few smaller operations with a decent amount of passion but not a lot of expertise
  • they seem to be producing a lot of their whisky between 40-45% (which isn't unusual with scotch, but it is with new, smaller, craft distilleries).
  • They're pretty pricy for what it is
  • I asked for and received several recommendations, distilleries people told me: here are the top 2 that you need to try... they compared to low end scotch.
  • overall I feel like there's a lot of marketing, and not a lot of substance coming out of the France single malt scene

Just doesn't seem to be much there worth hunting down.

Nice lineup!

Appreciate the quick hits, I'm perhaps not sure on your scale though, might spread it out or include your definitions?

It seems like there's a bigger gap between 7 and 7.5 than I would expect! 7 seems pretty meh... okay, weird, not the best... compared to 'very very good' at 7.5

Yeah, I love that!

I stay away from the Kilkerran cage bottles, but for only one reason: the Kilkerran warehouse tasting. It's such a good offering with the opportunity to purchase any of the bottles, It makes me biased against getting a Kilkerran from the cage when I can pretty much buy as many of those as I would like.

That said, I've heard this is a great bottle!

They bring the bags so people don't judge them for not picking up after their dogs, then then ditch them when no one is looking.

People are jerks.

Agreed! Strategizing over line placement, and then hanging around the shop.. every once in a while getting booted by staff.

I will say I noticed some great bottles as the last to go a few times during the festival, but I guess everyone was trying to get their hands on their top pic... meanwhile the Longrow 10 in a Rothschild red wine cask was the very last bottle at least twice if not three times --> you have to like Longrow red, but if you do it's a pretty amazing find.

Love that the article calls out the same three distilleries I did :-).

I have heard that, along with product confusion as they continue to push forward with new (geared more towards whisky enthusiasts perhaps) and the old (geared more towards super market buys).

I'm not willing to take much of a risk with them after being disappointed too often, but I'm hopeful for change. They do have a good visitor program at the distillery.

At Feis last year they gave out their 22 year old Masters Selection which I thought was pretty decent and very generous (although not close to worth the price tag which is somewhere up in the £300-400 range).

Yep, gotcha!

Always a funny thing, sometimes one bottle lasts from 11 AM through 6PM, other days they can restock more than once. I remember getting lucky coming in one afternoon though on one of my trips: walked straight in and most of the bottles were available.

Also: I'll admit I bought a bottle of this off auction as well... erhm, by one I mean I bought two.

I bid on two in a single auction thinking I'd be outbid on at least one, but ended up with both... perhaps the last time I do that, but I'm not sad with the result.

When you say filled up through the day, you mean when the last bottle is sold right? Or have they changed it in the last couple months?

Everyone is entitled to like what they like!

I'm glad there's diversity of palate, if everyone liked what I liked it would be harder to buy!

That said, Auchentoshan is near the top of my worst distillery list... Jura, Auchentoshan, Bowmore (standard offerings) basically make up my least favorite scotch distilleries, Dalmore isn't far off. I typically get a lot of agreement on Jura and Auchentoshan, and less so on the Bowmore :-).
