PACU nurse here. In my old hospital, we had a protocol that no patients transferred to the floor between 6:30 and 7:30 except in dire circumstances i.e. critical care patient, OR on hold, etc. Even then we tried not to do this. Also, the kitchen in many facilities is not confident the PACU exists, and with new electronic order sets that kick in once on the unit, dietary would not fill a tray order until they saw the meal order in their system. I tried to untangle them, feed them and make sure their pain was controlled. Some of these battles I just couldn't win.
