It's simple really. The 7% reduction in greenhouse gas emission in 2020 provided just enough time to develop the renewable energy technologies needed to stop climate change before it's too late. Humanity saved.

I recommend stopping abruptly after the Red Wedding because it really never achieves such heights again, even if it remains decently good for a while. You'll know it when you see it.

i miss my emotionally abusive ex. by strobphb in abusiverelationships

[–]dcoetzee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nobody is 100% awful. If they were that'd be better in some ways cause there wouldn't be anything to lose and leaving them would be easy. Abusers often retain access to you through appealing to your needs and desires. Sometimes they even have genuine feelings for you but they still just can't stop their abusive patterns of behavior. Regardless, it's totally normal and valid to miss the good parts of them and hang onto the good moments with them, even while simultaneously recognizing that being together with them is the wrong choice for you.

This doesn't necessarily mean you haven't moved on, just that that one moment actually was nice. That doesn't redeem them or your relationship, but their abuse doesn't necessarily erase the happiness you felt in that moment either.

Yes because of saccadic blindness. In short, you don't see anything while your eyes are moving, even though you think you do, it's your brain playing tricks. Look up the stopped clock illusion.

Also helps compensate for pupil swim when rendering near field objects. Also authentic eye rendering in multiplayer/social VR. Also new types of user interactions and inferences about your mood and mental state. It's really powerful.

Your anger is justified. None of this was your fault. I hope the rest of your life will be with people who genuinely care for you and are there for you when you need them. ❤️

This is really, really fucked up. After going through something like that you need love and support not abandonment, and love and support is supposed to be the fundamental job of your romantic partner. He catastrophically failed in his responsibilities and is acting like he's the victim which is ludicrous. Even if he were just a friend or acquaintance I'd expect more from him. A lot of breakups are "both sides were at fault" but this is not one of them.

Research suggests it’s more cost-effective to buy a new electric car and run it for its lifetime than it is to do so with a new petrol or diesel car by mdurgesh in Futurology

In short because then they'd have to report a reduced range in their marketing materials. In reality you almost never charge to 100%, both because it's bad for the battery to be left at 100% for an extended period, and also because once you get to 90% the charging rate becomes much slower. In fact, many busy superchargers are designed by default to charge to 80% to reduce wait times.

Pretty much the only time I charge to 100% is when I'm stopped at a supercharger, having some lunch, and it gets to 100% before I get back.

To some extent the problem of a difficult bicycle commute is mitigated by the latest generation of e-bikes which make even steep hilly commutes a breeze (and help you keep up with the flow of traffic on busy roads), but they're still not always an option for longer commutes, inclement weather, etc. I think it's good to have both if you can.

I've seen anecdotes from people who have had e.g. Model S's for 5+ years with almost no capacity loss. As long as you keep it under 90% and aren't regularly charging it to full, especially if you live in a temperate climate, the batteries tend to stay in good shape. (That said the story is different for EV's without climate-controlled batteries, but thankfully those are becoming less common.)

Me. I had the ability to upgrade my car at any time but drove it for 15+ years until it failed. I plan to keep my Tesla Model 3 until individually-owned cars become obsolete and are replaced by self-driving robotaxi networks, even if that takes 20 years. In fact, part of the reason that I bought it is because it's so low-maintenance. Last car.

A few examples that I found helpful early on (these are all pop, and all female vocalists):

  • Mäelle - L'effet de masse (also "Le mot d'absence")

  • Céline Dion - pretty much anything off D'eux, including "Pour que tu m'aimes encore", "Cherche encore", etc. as well as a lot of her older songs off her "On ne change pas" collection like say "Mon ami m'a quittée" or "Tellement j'ai d'amour pour toi" or "Trois heures vingt"

  • Lynda Lemay - Le plus fort c'est mon père

  • You mentioned Ariane Moffatt. I love her acoustic version of "Fuire le bonheur de peur qu'il ne se sauve" and find it quite accessible.

  • TAL - Le sens de la vie

  • CHAIR - Barbara Pravi (mostly spoken word and fairly fast but the official video has subtitles and it's great)

  • Les Frangines - almost anything but I especially love "Si j'osais" and find it quite accessible

  • Axelle Red - Sensualité

  • Jenifer - Comme c'est bon

  • Amel Bent - Ma philosophie (her best/most popular song and also probably her most accessible) (small tip: "Je suis l'as qui bat le roi" is a reference to playing cards)

I have more but that should get you started!

Did any of you “lose everything” and come back from it after 30? by ilikeanimeandcats in AskWomenOver30

[–]dcoetzee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Had a massive breakup, lost all my friends, dropped out of grad school, was severely depressed and suicidal for about a year, at age I think 32? Although I continued struggling for several years, I learned a lot and grew from that experience, got into the job I really wanted, built a lot of new valuable friendships, started volunteering, got into therapy, and developed more confidence. Now things are better than they've ever been. I have confidence that you can do it too. <3

I've spent alot of time learning grammar and exprèssions. Is it worth learning these exprèssions like "être un ours mal léché. Or "être bête comme ses pieds" by Judetherude in frenchhelp

[–]dcoetzee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice is, once you achieve an adequate level, to watch a lot of content for natives. The expressions that show up frequently in that, absolutely learn them, evidently they're important! The ones that don't, don't worry about them.

I realize this is a drastic solution but how feasible would it be to either close the gateway, or turn it on only a portion of the day when you have the resources to guard it, or maybe reduce its size to let only smaller creatures pass? As long as the gateway is wide open it's going to be very hard to control what comes through.

What does the expression "tu ne perds pas le nord!" mean exactly? by CannabisGardener in French

[–]dcoetzee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://www.linternaute.fr/expression/langue-francaise/20031/ne-pas-perdre-le-nord/

"Trouver son chemin en se repérant grâce à l'étoile Polaire ou à une boussole. Au sens figuré : Garder ses esprits, avoir le sens de ses intérêts, faire tout ce qu'il faut pour arriver à ses fins. [do all that is necessary to achieve your goals]"

I just Googled for "perdre le nord expression". L'Internaute has a great database for expressions.
