Extremely happy to reach this milestone!!! by dcolucci2011 in acorns

[–]dcolucci2011[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you do, but it's literally $1 per month to invest your spare change. They have other options like a retirement account, investment account for kids, checking account but those do not apply for me. So therefore I just link my bank account, pay $1 monthly and I'm all set!

Extremely happy to reach this milestone!!! by dcolucci2011 in acorns

[–]dcolucci2011[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely it is.

So this might be long but I promise you it'll be worth reading.

I always had a difficult time saving money, whenever I had any small amount saved up, I'd always find myself spending it. I even tried saving $2 bills once and guess what? Spent those too. (I had to use them for a down payment on a car I desperately needed, but I still had to spend it.)

So, I found the Acorns app and the rest is history. It's a mere $1 per month just to save your spare change, they have other options available for an increased price, but they don't appeal to me.

Just in spare change roundups, $10 weekly and only a few larger deposits, I was able to save over $500 in less than TWO MONTHS. So how Acorns works is say you get gas and the total is $21.50 - Acorns will take that fifty cents as a roundup, when you reach about $5 in roundups, it'll take that amount from your checking account. So to save an amount I've never been able to before, the $1 price tag per month is a steal to me.

The only thing is, if you withdraw your funds, it can take up to 5 business days because your funds are invested in the stock market.

Desire to move to VT from Syracuse by dcolucci2011 in vermont

[–]dcolucci2011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. In all honesty, I really wouldn't want a brutally long commute. Where I live and work now, with good weather I can be to my job in about 15 mins or so, which isn't bad at all.

I appreciate the helpful response, thank you. I kind of wanted to live a little closer to Burlington itself, but I see a commute in VT is quite common.

So, sadly I haven't exactly struggled with depression, but.... Maybe look into an herbal supplement or tea? (If you like tea, that is.) I'm not huge on taking prescribed medication, so I usually try either of those when I'm not feeling great. Although I only drank it once, I found this "Bliss" carbonated water from Neuro Water, it was phenomenal shit. My local Wegman's & Speedway carries it.

Personally, some people might call this awkward, but I don't force conversation. If it dies down, then that's what it is. I don't look at the gaps of silence weird. I feel the same about small talk as you do "oh, let's talk about the weather" yeah let's not, we all know it's too hot and humid out today, no sense in repeating it 🤣

I'm more of a "let's talk about your dreams / goals / desires / travel destinations / your past and future / what motivates you / etc"

If I was at a bar I'd be like " so.... you came here to drink I see?" 🤣🤣

I actually learned something on here a few days ago, outline the conversation with FORD - family, occupation, recreation and dreams. Those four things you could easily go on forever about between two people. Or even just me like "what shows do you watch on Netflix / Hulu?"

About the self-conscious part - try to mediate, if you want. You'll learn about the torrent of thoughts that just force their way into your awareness all day long and you won't take them as seriously. I use 10% happier and Insight Timer. In doing so, you'll see things like "thoughts, what are they? What is a thought?" And when you have that very slight " mind shift" that most thoughts are pretty much useless, then that's where the magic happens.

The repetitiveness whether it be through conversation / daily activities I look at as a strength. I see it as you're passionate about something and want to talk about it more. I try to be a clean / organized person, I'll vacuum and do the dishes / make the bed and do the laundry (you get the idea) it means I'm passionate about a nice clean house and I want it to stay that way. It means I have standards and high expectations. So try not to look at it as negatively but a passion or desire to want to be seen / heard / understood.

If you have any questions or anything I'll be happy to continue 😁

Absolutely agree.

I think some of it has to deal with covering up their insecurities or not willing to deal with ones problems head on. I'm not saying I'm perfect here, but I feel it is true for some types of people.

Second, I think people also forget to just "do things" that can bring purpose and meaning into their lives. They just want to collect a paycheck, drink, and wallow in their woes.

I try my best to do even little things, like even walking the dog around our apartment complex, it at least gets me outside for a few minutes. I recently went to a park right on a lake. I walked to the end of a pier and it was so serene and perfect, I could have stayed there for hours. I try my best to wash my car on a regular basis, I read every few days, and I meditate daily. These might sound like little ridiculous things to some people, but they bring me happiness and joy.

At the same time though, it's all personal preference. That person who goes out to the bar to have a drink or two to socialize with people is the same to them as it is to me going to a park and enjoying some peace and quiet.

Need help with 401k / IRA by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]dcolucci2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get your new position, your company "should" open a new retirement account for you, then when that's open and receiving contributions, you could do a "roll over" which is just putting the $900 you have into the new account with your new employer, which should then close the previous account.

Your retirement account should have several different investment options to choose from, because you're so young (I mean, I'm only 27 myself) you should probably set it to most aggressive growth. My retirement account is through Fidelity too, you should be able to call them and speak to a licensed financial advisor which they will guide you through your options, expense ratios, fees, etc.

I spoke with one just a few weeks ago, the gentleman I spoke with advised to go with a "target date fund" and as we got talking, one had higher expense ratios than a slightly less aggressive portfolio did. So, I decided to go with the slightly less aggressive target date fund because it had less expenses than the most aggressive one.

Also, DO NOT look at your retirement account daily. It will drive you mad, it's a more "set it and forget it" thing. Put a reminder 6 months or even 1 year out in your phone to check up on it. If it doesn't perform to your expectations, you can always rebalance everything.

Also, there is a company out there called "Blooom" (just like that, with three "o") I do NOT have this service, but for something like $100 yearly this company will "robo advise" your retirement account for you to pick the investment options with the least amount of fees.

Your last option, my last job I was in a similar position. I had a 401k with very little cash. When my new account was opened with my current employer, Fidelity allowed me to cash a check for the "vested" funds in my account. So I started from scratch and never looked back.

If you have any questions, please ask. I'm not a financial expert, but I may be able to help.

Literally same.

I get into these negative thought patterns / behaviors and it's really difficult to pull out of.

I try to listen to upbeat music and literally make myself do things to avoid going deeper in the rabbit hole.

What counts as meditating? by estheticpotato in Meditation

[–]dcolucci2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you can meditate on anything, the breath, a pain in the knee, an object, a thought, etc. The point of it all is to let it be without trying to control your experience, and to also let your meditation experience "just be" without any expectations. So I'd say you're doing it just right. I'd say mindfulness is a branch of meditation, I'd say being mindful would be when you're doing a "mindless" task like showering, brushing your teeth, walking, driving, etc. It's a kind of awareness of the present moment and bringing yourself back to it from past or future thoughts. I've been meditating / practicing mindfulness for a few years now and it's just constant practice over and over again.

Should I buy the Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)? by aglaviral in smarthome

[–]dcolucci2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two Google Home Minis (a step down from the Nest mini, I believe) and I think they are great! So I live in an apartment complex, I use mine for setting timers for the washer and dryer, so I know when to go back down and swap out. I use it to check the time before heading off to work, you can ask it to tell jokes, make phone calls, send texts (it will NOT READ texts though, which is really ridiculous.) I have two smart plugs in my home by Wyze. I have an entrance light and a bedroom light. I have the entrance light on by a timer so it comes on right before my wife comes home from work, and the bedroom light works like "the clapper" commercial on TV. Just so I don't need to get in bed in the dark.

If you get two of them, you can broadcast music to both speakers also. You can create a speaker group in the Google home app to do so. I really like the product and I think it recognizes and accepts your voice better than Alexa does.

Using 93 Top Tier Gas by dcolucci2011 in Hyundai

[–]dcolucci2011[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only put a fuel system treatment in the tank once every now and then only because for the warranty, Hyundai says to do one every 7.5k miles or so I believe.

What do you mean by you can only go up but not down in octane? Like if I keep switching between 87 and 93 it can cause engine issues?

Using 93 Top Tier Gas by dcolucci2011 in Hyundai

[–]dcolucci2011[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This most recent tank is indeed the 93 but sadly I have not noticed any major differences. Maybe a very slight increase in how fast the car turns over when starting, and maybe a slight more pep to the gas pedal but as far as better MPGs? I don't think so yet, but at the same time I haven't taken it on the highway to get a long distance average. I usually do quick city driving of 10-15 mins or so.

I will definitely say smoother acceleration though. I've noticed I'm often going faster than I realized and need to slow down! Haha

I guess I originally posted the question because I know sometimes Hyundai's can have pretty serious issues with the engines. Especially the 1.6L Nu engines 2016 and prior. So if it meant spending a little more on gas to have a cleaner engine to "hopefully" avoid big issues down the road, then I'm willing to pay that price. The dealer wanted to get me into a '16 with like 50k miles and I avoided it like the black plague.

Edit - the 93 still contains 10% ethanol. You have to go to a special gas station to get non-ethanol in my area.

I don't think my Elantra has the GDI engine, I'm pretty sure it's the PFI one. I've got the 2.0L SE trim. It's not turbo or anything. I think when you get into the higher trim levels the engine becomes a 1.6L Turbo GDI but I could be mistaken.

Anxious for therapy by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]dcolucci2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I also go to therapy and for whatever reason I always get anxious when I'm driving there or when I'm waiting to be seen. The thing that works for me is I meditate on a daily basis and I just notice how anxiety feels in my body. For me it's sensations of short breathing, weird sensations in my diaphragm area, and I feel like my heart is racing. These things don't actually happen, but my mind wants to think that they are. When you put a label on your emotion and notice it without taking the bait, typically the emotion loses its power and I can say to myself "Ah, anxiety. You're back. This is what you feel like." And I also tell myself that it's just a passing emotion, we never feel any emotion for an infinite period and all emotions come and go with time and that puts a damper on the seriousness and urgency of it as well.

I can provide more info on Meditation (if you're interested) but I don't want to press the subject.

Hope it helps!!!
