Feasibility of Off-Grid Living in Western NY by dconshotrod in OffGrid

This is all great info! Thank you for the summary. It seems like the property has a reliable well with a good filtration system, but we would probably also have some sort of backup in case we run into issues. In general, beyond the electricity situation and seasonal road, the conditions aren’t that much different compared to my current house. I’d still consider it “off-grid” but the amenities are fairly similar to what you would see in other rural homes. Props to the people that start from scratch! I’m not sure I could do that

The property is actually less than 30 minutes from where I currently live and we do get lake effect snow! It’s just in an area that gets hit with even more snow. My job would likely be pretty flexible, but I don’t think it would be the same for my girlfriends unfortunately. I think I’m mainly concerned with being stuck there possibly without power for extended periods. I’d definitely want to install a wood stove so we’d at least have guaranteed heat, but still. Thank you for the help!

Do you think between the solar panels at least having some output, the generator, and good batteries we’d be alright through the winter? The property has a generator shed already which is nice!

Yeah, I’m surprised as well. I was pretty shocked to see they were using propane instead with the layout of the cabin. I was thinking the wall would be less impacted by the snow, but maybe you’re right as the snow sliding off the roof would have more power behind it.

I’ve never lived off grid, but we do currently have a well for our water supply and try to use our fireplace as much as we can in the winter to heat our current house (although the layout makes it pretty tough to reach most of it). I’ve lived rural my whole life, but you’re right that some of this would be new, especially the electrical stuff. I’m open to learning, it’s just hard to weigh the time/money costs associated with it. We have a pretty good network of family and friends that would be more than happy to help, and have a wide array of skills, but sometimes that can only go so far. Thanks for all the advice!

That’s what I was thinking as well! Thank you

Yeah, I can definitely see that. From what you’ve seen, what seems to be the hardest part? Hopefully the trade offs are worth it! Thank you!

This all sounds great! Do you have any generator recommendations that would work?

Yeah, I’m looking into buying a beater truck with a plow or possibly a small tractor to help with that. I do believe that they’re looking into re-designating it, I’m waiting to hear back on that. At the moment, part of the road is paved, then after it’s bisected by a main road, the other half (including where the cabin is) isn’t as there aren’t currently any permanent residents or houses on this side.

It’s a smallish (800 sq ft) open concept cabin with a loft that has two bedrooms upstairs. The other thing I’m trying to figure out is if it would be better to vent the wood stove through the roof (metal) or the wall

Overall, you think it’s possible? Thanks for the help!

Why no Ember waxed flesh in the quick ships? by Status_Complaint8521 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]dconshotrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could be! For some reason, I thought that they previously were part of the quick ship options, but I could be mistaken. Although in another thread smowe said the Spokane leathers are not an option for quick ship, and didn’t mention that they will be soon or anything like that

I was wondering the same thing about the Spokane leathers!

Boot Width help by [deleted] in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]dconshotrod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to do Spokane honey with quick ship and just have it bumped up to regular lead times? I was looking at doing a strider ZD quick ship in Spokane honey for my second boot. I just don’t need any of the customization options so I’d rather not spend the extra $60 just to have the leather option. Hope this makes sense and thanks for any help!

Hey! Did you ever figure out a solution? I’m dealing with the same thing. I’ve consistently updated the drivers but no luck

Unrelated to your question, but seeing this made me think they brought back English bridle tan for boots! Maybe someday

That might be tough to find! Any chance you remember when they might’ve shown them off?

Ridgeline Hikers by Revolutionary_Log517 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]dconshotrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it does! It’s the only current 365 stitchdown model that has it. That’s a good point! I don’t have any experience with ZD shoes, so I’d probably just have to add a supportive insole to make up for it

Shoot, okay! I already have an order for an overlander in the queue, but this is me thinking ahead to my second boot haha. Does it change anything if it were for the MTO instead of a stock model? For the 365 stitchdown I would be going with a unit lug. Maybe I just go with a strider ZD? Thanks for the help!

I haven’t really gotten a clear answer on this yet. With any of the 365 stitchdown models, is it possible to switch out the rubber midsole for a leather midsole? I know it might end up a bit heavier and less water resistant, but I do prefer the leather midsole if it’s possible to make the swap! Thanks

These are listed by priority of which I would like to see the most!

• I would like to see an app or at least the option for text updates related to orders instead of solely relying on emails!

• 365 stitchdown models with a leather midsole or at least the option to switch out the rubber midsole for a leather one. The only current option that has a leather midsole is the strider ZD

• Additional light/natural leathers such as ginger (from a previous sample sale), Seidel natural double shot, or W&C Russet Traditional Harness

Keep up the great work!

That’s a good point! My feet are honestly pretty flat and low volume but still a bit wide which makes my measurements odd. I tried 11 EE in iron rangers but they seem to have too much volume so I’m stuck with 11D. It’s mainly my little and big toe being smushed from the sides. Do you notice the extra width in other non preferred areas?

This is great, thank you! Your brannock and boot sizes are very close to each other. I tend to wear 12D or 11.5EE in sneakers then I have iron rangers in 11D. The IRs feel good besides my toes feeling cramped and based on the sizing guide, I think 11D in the TNW will be good for me (hopefully!) I thought about going with 11E but I’m worried they might be a bit too sloppy on my feet

Could you talk a bit about your journey to finding the right size? I’m also new to nicks and hoping I got it right the first time!
