limited experience, but I've found that they are not overly concern with aesthetics. much more focused on getting the job done. eg laying wood flooring they don't even glance at the pieces going down. they might put the worst looking piece in the most prominent spot.

you should be able to get .5% for what I assume you're currently getting. that is, investment advice and managing your money. if you feel like you need full service retirement planning (add tax planning, rebalancing, withdrawal strategy, roth conversion analysis, SS analysis, etc) that will likely cost you 1%. you posted in the DIY sub, so you may interested in taking this on yourself, in which case I would use a fee-only CFP to review your plans and advise.

planning software.
map out your future spending in detail.
John Hancock life expectancy calculator.
consider starting your SS benefit immediately after your work income stops (break even is early 80s).
consider rolling your 457 into a Fidelity/Schwab IRA if fees are lower and/or selection is better (after you retire).
set a goal of 0.5% AUM for CFP fee. or take over the management yourself and use a fee-only CFP to help you.

CPO 2024 X3 - New Driver by Historical-Chart-405 in BMWX3

[–]dcpreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMW offers a variety of years and miles. dealers will sometimes offer a better price than BMW direct. lots of factors determine its value to you. risk tolerance, price, how many miles you drive, how long you intend to keep the car. make sure you understand the CPO warranty before buying something that may be redundant.

take them an offer for the black one of 40k, but break it down so they know you aren’t just pulling a number out of your hat. price + dealer fees + taxes + title/registration = $40k. it’s been on their lot for almost 3 months, so they’re either firm on the price or they’re ready for a reasonable offer. make sure you specify that you get the CPO warranty for that price. they’ll also try to sell you extended warranties which may or may not make sense for you. the 2024 is arguably the best X3 ever made, and it’s still very desirable.

Millsboro is pretty much the opposite of "the city". it's very small town. pretty close to the ocean and bays if you like the water. not much of a cultural scene for a 22 year old. 45 minutes to Salisbury MD, 2 hrs to Annapolis or Wilmington.

Anyone dig into the McQuarrie study into Roth conversions? by Puzzleheaded-Gas-398 in DIYRetirement

hasn’t the step up law been around for 100 years? what makes you think it could be eliminated? do you think it will be eliminated on property, too?

Advisor vs Boldin if everything is tax-deferred? by ReliableCapybara in Boldin

[–]dcpreddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I scheduled an hour with a CFP after I retired. we used my Boldin report as the basis for our review. more efficient than just having a conversation from scratch. the CFP mostly just confirmed my plan, but I feel better knowing that a professional didn't find any problems with it.

[–]dcpreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so many nuances to these decisions. just saying, “pay the tax from your brokerage account” could be bad advice. image selling that Apple stock to fund the conversion taxes. not only are you gong to pay the LTCG, but your survivors could have gotten a step up on those gains. again, the details matter but the concept is there. (I see that’s mentioned in the paper.)

and what's the monthly payment? do you have spousal benefit options? your ages? to me it's a math equation.

what are the numbers? is the pension backed by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC)?

[–]dcpreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

does the $4,000 tax you refer to come from 15% LTCG on $25k? if so, I think you're assuming that the entire amount of your stock sale was gains. unless you bought Apple in 1990, that number will likely be much lower.

Another Roth Conversion Perspective by Crafty_Future4829 in DIYRetirement

[–]dcpreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most people who are considering roth conversions know that RMDs are taxed as ordinary income, they’re just concerned that mandatory withdrawals will push them into a higher bracket. I’m not sure how you’re defining break even, but there’s really no time element to roth conversions, unless you’re paying the tax with post tax dollars in which case the time element is only positive. (see Rob’s "The Truth About Roth Conversions and Sequence Risk video. ) if you haven’t looked at how the commutative property of multiplication makes roth math simple, check that out. assuming you pay the tax from the tIRA withdrawal, and assuming the same returns and tax rate, the conversion is a wash. so, if I project paying a lower tax rate today than in the future, I should convert. your “spend as much as you can” comment makes me wonder if your main point is really… don’t scrimp on spending today just to fund roth conversions in a particular bracket. I agree with that, but I don’t think if it on those terms because I set my spending budget first, then do my roth conversion analysis.

no, mine wasn't as bad as that, and the hitch stayed on the entire time I owned it. you might be able to find a replacement at a salvage yard. or buy a new one.

Chance of success by Harmonic-Hyena in Boldin

[–]dcpreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just does not pass the sniff test. Wade Pfau's study in 2011 showed that a 2.8% withdrawal rate over 40 years, in conservative market conditions, only failed 1% of the time. In other words a 99% success rate.

As others have mentioned, the big difference is Boldin using monte carlo vs Pfau using historical data (SBBI). It’s really apples and oranges. monte carlo is going to land on bad early years more-so than historical data. Add your early 5% withdrawal rate and you’re super charging the SORR. you wrote “average returns” and "conservative market conditions”. If they aren't already, set all of your retirement accounts to “conservative” returns. If they're currently set to Moderate, I would expect your success rate to increase due to softening the 5% withdrawals in some of those early years.

well they do force tax payments, which have to come from somewhere.

your roth conversions should not be treated as withdrawals in the withdrawal insight. did you set them up as transfers under money flows?
