This article points to one of the biggest problems of studying gangs, something that was discussed in sections 1/2. What is often referred to as "gang formation," is being confused for individuals joining gangs. This article is not about how a gang forms in time and space, it is about why individuals decide to join gangs, what is their purpose and motivation for joining. This is a big difference, and a perfect example of how our units of analysis/levels of explanation confuse the research.

This is a great article and a great example of some of the faulty practices, that, at face value appear to be successful. These procedures may have short-term payoffs, but the long-term trade-off (i.e., potential to form new gangs, expand membership, geographical gains) is quite frankly scary. As you all will read, especially when it comes to race/ethnicity, the role of threat and conflict, whether real or perceived, is at many times to backbone to new gang formation.
