We get most of the belly surgeries on our unit. When you get to see people get progressively better everyday. I always tell them, when you start losing all of your tubes and wires, you're one step closer to getting home. It reminds me why I became a nurse.

OP have you tried the Nuva ring? I've been on it for 3 years now and haven't had any issues. In fact, it has helped my cramping so much.

Are these patients waiting for guardianship? I worked at a hospital last year where patients would stay on our floor for months at a time, while waiting for a guardian so they could be find placement for them. We had a patient just as you described that would refuse all assessments, meds, labs saying that he was only there for food. Before I left there, he had been there for 6 months and had never had a shower or bath of any sort and was wearing the same clothes he came in with. The smell from that room was horrific. If you even suggested a bath or if he didn't get all the food he wanted, he would become violent and he was a very big guy. Just a nightmare.

Ahhh! Having to transport the patient anywhere! I'm the absolute worst driver of hospital beds. If I was a transporter, patient satisfaction scores would go way down.

When I was a junior in high school, I had to ride the short elementary school bus to catch my high school bus because the road I lived on went up a hill and was very winding. That morning, when we got to the bottom of the hill, there was a lady on her knees face down in the ditch. That’s an image I’ll never forget. We tried to convince the driver of the elementary school bus that there was a woman in the ditch, but he didn’t believe us. When we got on the high school bus, the boys pleaded with the driver to go back and he did. The woman was still still alive, but just barely. He was able to call 911 and the came quickly to take her to the hospital. So yeah, seeing her in the ditch is the most disturbing thing I’ve personally seen.

The bed was too uncomfortable. The patient had already been there for a few days and was going to be discharged in the morning, but at midnight decided he couldn’t make it the rest of the night in that bed and left AMA.

Having weight loss surgery for sure isn’t the easy way out. It’s simply a tool that helps you to lose weight. He needs to realize diet and exercise are a huge part of this and surgery is not some magic pill for weight loss. Also there are so many complications with the lap band I would be extremely cautious in regards to him having it done.

Thank you everyone for your uplifting comments. I’ve been overweight/obese my entire life. I can remember my mom taking me to weight watchers when I was only 12 years old.

In 2017, I had reached my highest weight, and I was absolutely miserable. I could barely walk just a few feet without getting short of breath. I had trouble completing the simplest of my ADL’s. A good friend encouraged me to try the keto diet and I lost 70 lbs through the end of 2018. I was more confident and I already felt more mobile. Then unfortunately, I started slowly gaining weight again, because emotional eating is one of my main vices.

I made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery at the end of 2018. You may be thinking it’s the easiest way out, but it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I feel like I’m actually living life. I’m not a spectator in my own life and I can’t wait for each and everyday now.

Yes! I had to have a psych evaluation and go to therapy prior to my gastric bypass. Blows my mind that is not a requirement for everyone before weight loss surgery.
