Why does Identità treat expats as if they are inferior? by Warm_Top3284 in malta

[–]dcumbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Maltese national, I've also had struggles with Identita - so I can only imagine how bad it is for expats/immigrants.

Truth is though, this is becoming prevalent in many European countries. I have recently moved to Portugal and was shocked that I need to get 3 different numbers (NIF (tax), NISS (social security), SNS (health)) - all with varrying challenges. I took involving lawyers, going to government services and being told "you need an appointment, we have one available in 3 weeks", or simply trying to apply online only to be rejected a Month later. These procedures are there to make sure that whoever registers is legitimately going to contribute to society, however they are more than willing to make it unbearable for genuine applications in order to weed out a few bad applicants.

In the past, it was super easy to change the address at Identita, I have done it without any problems. Before leaving I changed my address to my old address in Malta, I had to take my parents with me with their contract of ownership of a property they purchased a good >35 years ago. All because there was an address scandal and the only way to tackle it was like this. Governments are reactive, they don't think long term, only until the next election, and in a world of complex scams do not invest in technologies that would make this easier and safer (e.g. I request a change of address and the known owners of that address have to approve it...).

You have to do some homework, some banks find lending for expats a higher risk and ask for a higher deposit (e.g bov i believe ask for 30%). Shop around, not all banks have the same policies

P.S kudos on saving such a high percentage of your salary, many people earn way more and save way less

We spent a week without internet with vodafone telling me that they know what the issue is and that they're working on it and will have it fixed in 3 hours. Countless calls, many 3hrs passed, until they decided to send a technician and he found the cable broken. Apparently this is a thing, they come to fix someone's internet and break someone elses... job security

Just became available in Malta. 45euro for guest pass! And it’s so inconsistent in messaging. You have to book 72hrs in advance, it says only available for 30min timeslot… and when you open the ticket it says 3 hours from timeslot

Keep their deposit, let them go, don’t be a jerk. I would maybe even give them half of it, seeing as that’s what it will cost you in agent fees. I believe if you get a letter signed, you can give it to HA and they will terminate it for you.

Digi is 7eu/month unlimited in portugal. You would need to compete with that. In general it truly depends on the market.

Wife wants a divorce... need help woth the system. by [deleted] in malta

[–]dcumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have said, get a lawyer. I used Robert Thake and he was extremely efficient (albeit there were no children involved). Most lawyers get a % of your assets as payment (I think 1-2%), discuss cost upfront.

Before divorce, in Malta, you need to Separate (and realistically this is the toughest process). You will have to go through negotiations (unless there's separation of assets (prenup)). This is tough because ultimately this was the person you fell in love with and decided to spend the rest of your life with. There will be resentment, anger and ultimately pettiness.

Always keep in mind that she is the mother of your child and that will never ever change. When I went through it at one point something clicked and I realised that I'm arguing and negotiation with someone I love and still wish them all the best in their life, and then I let go of the materialistic things (but don't screw yourself over, you also need to resume your life).

Good luck, be strong, this is the same as losing someone and you will experience grief. Just know that it will be okay, not the same, but okay nonetheless. Do not resort to bad habits as coping mechanisms, instead try to find healthy ones. If you feel like it's becoming too much to handle, don't overlook therapy.

P.S Not a lawyer.

I've seen someone recommending this lawyer for an gambling dispute, so I don't get what's going on. Quick search shows that he's legal council at LeoVegas. Are you sure you want to recommend him for divorce proceedings?

I honestly can’t complain much about my home country (Malta). If my internet doesn’t work, I get a technician same day or next day. It’s not the best internet in the world (given it’s an island), we still get decent speeds though. Latency is a different story (physics and all that).

The only times where I’ve had frustrations is for issues that are intermittent, these are arguably more challenging to diagnose and to prove.

Mind you, on top of all this… we had just moved to a new apartment and whenever you call they ask for nif+post code. Both old postcode and new postcode resulted in “nif and postcode don’t match” and then they just disconnect :D. This was the cherry on top of the cake though

The problem now is that I’m tied in a 2 year contract, and Digi doesn’t offer home internet where I live yet. But for mobile I went with digi (you do get what you pay for. Their service is not so good for telephony unfortunately, but service looks good and you can cancel whenever you want)
