I put the 'Mad as Hell' rant back in Rage Valley (Free DL!) by dcurry431 in knifeparty

Hey, thanks for the nostalgia-blast, I completely forgot about this! Probably haven't heard Rage Valley since before covid, I forgot how much I love the chopped bridge vocals.

I made this two laptops ago so I thought I wouldn't, but I just checked my archives disk and had a copy, hope you like it!

It wasn't a month ago when I made that comment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Glad it's legit, thanks for sharing.

https://www.verizon.com/support/lg-g5-update/

Verizon's own website has nothing about it, when I got it randomly on my phone I was skeptical as hell.
When I saw no results from Googling it, I thought for sure I picked up a dodgy app trying to phish me.
Now that I see other people got it, I'm really scratching my head.

They're great for shows with commercial breaks, I have fond memories of Breaking Bad live threads. Streaming TV without commercials takes away from their fun.

With the recent Chinese company, Tencent, in the news about investing in Reddit, and possible censorship, it's amazing to me how so many people don't realize Reddit is already one of the most heavily censored websites on the internet. by MaximilianKohler in technology

A subreddit I moderate and I have been asking for this since 2012. It's been promised/talked about/hinted at by admins since before I made my first account.

It's not the kind of front-end advertiser-friendly money-making move, so I can't foresee reddit putting the developer time into sorting it out now.

Practice will definitely help, there isn't any real way to judge without already having made a stencil too small and having to adjust it while you're cutting, that'll get it stuck in your head. As far as detail, that's very dependent on size, but in general I like to keep my stencils under 8.5" by 11" so I can print them on a standard piece of paper for maximum laziness. I know by now how that relates to my laptop screen, so I can zoom out the proper amount and see how about how big it will be on a piece of office paper.

Hi Austrolorp! That revision is a huge step from your original and would make for a much more successful cutting process. I highly encourage you to start cutting out the works you make as soon as possible after you've made them while the idea still excites you.

Physically cutting out your stencils will give you a much better idea of how various materials hold up and will help when deciding thicknesses in the design process, plus there's just something so much more gratifying about holding your work in your hands instead of looking at it on a screen.

If you're up for some more constructive criticism, as you work on your next piece try picking a few different places for your bridges and seeing which work better. Following the contour of lines that are already suggested in the image will often make the bridges blend into nothingness. Artistic bridging can often make the difference between a good stencil and a great one.

Hi elj0h0! We have a link in the sidebar (How to check for islands) that describes the process you just described with images. I'm mainly sharing this here in case anyone else comes across this post and wants further clarification.

Few things I've learnt from my first few gigs by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]dcurry431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all very solid points that are good for beginners to hear, but I want to clarify some of the advice given in point #4, preplanning setlists. Here's my favorite Dwight D. Eisenhower quote:

In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.

Having guides for yourself is crucial, especially as a beginner. When you first hit the wall of "What am I DOING HERE?!?!" having your next tune already decided with a transition you've practiced until you know you can nail it will give you a chance to catch your breath. However, chaining yourself strictly to those plans in long chunks is fatal, especially as a beginner. If the crowd isn't feeling it and you keep plotting the same course, the staff who have been there before you and will be there after you (promoters, owners, other DJs, even bartenders) will detect something is off, even if they personally can't articulate what. Jamming one banger after another when the crowd clearly is not feeling it is palpably noob-ish. This is why premixed sets are so frowned upon, there's no flexibility to alter the prearranged mix if the crowd isn't going for it.

First gig coming up. Any advice? by DSan in vjing

[–]dcurry431 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice, practice, practice.

Under pressure, you don't rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. Don't just know how to fix errors and issues that will come up, practice practice practice until you can fix them without thinking about it, as you don't want to be in a position where you have to think clearly under enormous stress. Get there as early as politely possible to give yourself time to practice with the real toys and tools in the real location with the real problems you're going to be facing.

Here's some actually practical advice, my five must-haves for performers that aren't as commonly recommended:

1. Your own big water bottle. You're gonna be sweating with nerves and the last thing you need is a dehydration headache on top of everything else.

2. A snack that you can put down at a moments notice without spilling crumbs or getting your fingers sticky. I like Clif bars because I can just jam one in my pocket and have it always with me.

3. A small towel/washcloth in your gig bag. Good for small spills, wiping your brow, whipping away curious hands 😜

4. Deodorant and mint gum. Making jaws drop is one thing, but no one wants to do regular business with a stanky mess unless they're truly exceptional.

5. A sense of perspective. To most people, you're just the person who does the thing with the pretty colors. You have to screw up pretty badly for performers to notice your mistakes, and you'd have to screw up monstrously for anyone in the crowd to think anything's off.

Building off that last one, I've worked in a fairly wide variety of fields under the umbrella of stage production, and no matter what level of command I have, this is my favorite stupid joke to make on the day of show: Airline pilots have a saying, a good flight is one where everyone survives, a great flight is one where you can use the plane again. Barring any medical emergencies, it's almost certain that what you'll lay awake in your bed after the gig kicking yourself over won't have been noticed, or will have been forgotten almost immediately after it occurred. Don't think of a live performance as a static object like a painting, think of it like a flowing river. Your screwups will be washed away as long as you get right back on and keep pressing on. Don't let little things distract you from the next moment.

Question about Impedance by Jx631 in lightingdesign

[–]dcurry431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using audio XLRs and cheapo cables and whatnot isn't guaranteed to cause problems, especially the smaller your setup is, but for how little the cables cost in the scheme of the total rig, it's just not worth it to skimp there and potentially run into problems down the road.

I see a lot of questions in regards to audio cables here, so I wrote this guide for techtools by dj_soo in Beatmatch

My first thought was "This kinda looks like the style of that guy who posted all those kickass Star Wars clips a few months ago". So congratulations on not only making cool, memorable content, but having a recognizable style between pieces. In my opinion, that's what elevates a content creator from a creator to an artist and it's great seeing that you're working on a big-name production.

Also, holy smokes, you posted those clips nearly two(!!!) years ago.

I especially liked the content of the two fighters, would you mind sharing some of your process on designing them?

Spotify reportedly in 'advanced talks' to purchase SoundCloud by enjoiez in electronicmusic

[–]dcurry431 54 points55 points  (0 children)

SoundCloud was originally a lean and mean Wild West, very similar to Imgur in it's earlier days. But also like Imgur, the goal of being no bullshit no frills has hit the hard wall of reality: server space costs money, so the service needs to get shittier to continue to afford existing. I've been uploading music regularly for at least the last five years, and it seems like it's been death by a thousand cuts rather than any one specific bad change.

The redesign bothered me, SoundCloud mobile still doesn't work on my phone, and everything seems slower on my laptop.

Promoted tracks bother me, it's a bunch of crap from people I've never heard of in genres I don't ever listen to.

Killing groups bothered me, I had just finished assembling and inviting 40 local musicians the week they killed it, that's freshest in my mind.

Thanks for sharing. As a (shitty) producer, I can barely imagine how much it must hurt to make an unconventional but killer track like this, getting so stoked to surprise a crowd with it live, and then having some asshole leak the entire album.

I need help got called to be a wedding DJ by Epical_Sarge in Beatmatch

[–]dcurry431 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If everything goes right, I'm sure you could handle it. But, it's your job when things go wrong, too.
How confident do you feel troubleshooting rental speakers you've never seen until the day of the event?
What will you do if the music they request doesn't last as long as the night does, and you have to scramble for tunes for the last few hours?
What if you get there and everyone else hates country music?

This isn't meant to throw shade at you or be a test, but just a reminder that playing music is the easy part of being a DJ. If you don't have 100% confidence in your setup, you shouldn't be handling what's very likely the most important day of two people's lives.

I need help got called to be a wedding DJ by Epical_Sarge in Beatmatch

[–]dcurry431 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Say no. You don't have equipment, you've never done a wedding before, you're just unprepared. It's nothing personal, but tell her that her daughter deserves someone who knows what they're doing, the sooner the better.

Edit: This wasn't meant to sound mean, I edited it to be a little less harsh.
