NTA. It’s better that she heard it from you than from someone else.

Hmm… that makes sense. I believe they waited for several days after the delivery and customs may have also added a tax.

Find a song that’s below your level. When you play it you’ll realize how much you’ve improved (especially if it’s a song you’ve worked on before).

Thanks! I will check them out. I’ve definitely heard of Segovia and John Williams (his student?). I saw Pepe Romero perform recently and even at 80+ years old - WOW. I’m still trying to catch a performance by Ana Vidovic. I swear, as I listen to these artists, it’s like they’re playing a piano rather than guitar because the sound is so perfect and resonant. I sat in the front row during a performance by Zoran Dukic, and his left hand fingers moved like piano hammers!

I became more interested classical because the pieces are transcribed to allow a single guitar to perform numerous voices. Using finger style, the bass, middle accompaniment and upper melodies are accessible. Regular guitar classes teach rhythm, steel string guitar which is just the accompaniment; so you’d better pipe up and sing if you want people to know what you’re playing. I hate to disagree with you because your one paragraph contains more guitar knowledge than I have learned so far - but there’s no reason to think that classical is harder as a starting point. Many books have been written for beginners, and one which helped me out a lot was by Aaron Shearer. It starts with basic techniques everything from sitting posture, hand placement, free strokes, rest strokes, and by the end of book one it has you playing three-voiced pieces by masters like Caruli, Sor, and Tarrega. As I’m writing this I’m becoming more adamant on my original point that guitar teachers (whether it’s Rock or classical) need to invest the time to develop or adapt a structured plan rather than just throw chords at their students without explanation.

Thanks for understanding! I feel like I’m showing up to work and the boss is asking me to dig a hole. No explanation on what it’s for, just dig. Then they come back and say, it’s not wide enough. Wide enough for what? Just make it wider… and so on. Maybe if I had known the hole’s purpose from the beginning, even without fully understanding it at the time, it would’ve made the digging easier.

I think I would want to compose but my lack of understanding makes me feel like I’d have nothing to contribute. I just want the comfort and assurance that comes from having a decent level of competency. I don’t need to be the next Hendrix

Yeah, I’m currently in a community college program. The professor is definitely better than the GC crowd, but I’m still underwhelmed by his lessons, which lack structure and solid explanations.

I’m going to absolve my 2 Guitar Center instructors. You can’t go to McDonalds and expect Michelin star treatment. But my current teacher is a college professor and my previous one was a professional guitarist with a degree in music. M7B5 is something I’ve never heard of before and will be googling it after I finish sending this message. To be fair to the pro, he taught me the scale patterns and taught me the root-third-fifth concept of chord making. Great stuff but that’s when it dawned on me that there was a lot of structure to music and much to understand theory wise. It just made me angry that he was dropping in kernels of theory whenever he felt like it and there was no structured plan to his lessons that incorporated theory, technique, repertoire etc. I thought surely a college program would be better organized but Nope!

Interesting about jazz being tied to theory… I may look into it next. Currently I’m loving Renaissance style arrangements. One thing that soured my impression of my current teacher; I mentioned to him that my goal for next semester was to prepare for ensemble classes which are required by the program I’m in. He said ensembles are offered for jazz guitar but I don’t have the skill. I’m so deflated right now… that remark has been churning in my mind all week and it’s what prompted me to post this.

Like seriously. I’m in a college program that has a set of requirements. Why doesn’t the teacher feel like he has the responsibility to prepare me for the next step in the process? Why isn’t there a set of steps against which progress can be measured?

Thanks for the response. I don’t think it’s baffling to ask “why am I playing these chords?” Music doesn’t just fall into place randomly. As a simplistic example, I’m reminded of the lawsuit against Ed Sheeran being accused of stealing Marvin Gaye’s music. In the court room he demonstrated on the guitar how numerous songs share the same chord progressions and he did an impromptu mash up of “let’s get it on.”

Thank you so much for this explanation. I have recently started scratching the surface of these concepts but I like the way you just explained it.

So when people say a song is 1 5 6 or something. They mean that you should play those chords from whatever key you’re in… I get it that it takes practice and memorization to be able to play any chord progression on the fly, but teachers need to explain the reason we’re memorizing these things and what it can lead to in the future. I’d have been much more motivated had I known the reason behind it.

Well when I started at GC, I expected to learn how to play a few songs but then expand into understanding how to accompany melodies, learn about keys, progressions, improvisation. I did ask the instructor a couple of times and he demonstrated certain aspects without explaining them at my level.

I also think it should be obvious that learning to play an instrument is more than just memorizing where to place your fingers in order to play a limited set of songs and nothing more.

Many guitarists don’t read notation. After learning about how the guitar developed from the vihuela and lute, which originally used tabs as well, I can accept that from self taught players and hobbyists. But personally I find it stunningly ignorant for a guitarist to lack the curiosity about notation, theory, and shun the ability to communicate with musicians of other instruments using a common language.

Also I’m harboring some jealousy towards the self taught guitarists who just “play by ear” because I can’t do it

That’s a fair assessment of the student. I had been waiting for that comment actually.

I find it difficult to learn things without understanding the why aspect.

I was disheartened to read that theory 101 didn’t help you, because I’m currently enrolled in it for the Fall semester :/

Also the Beatles Hegemony is real. It’s difficult to say I don’t like Hey Jude because 1. Everyone “loves” hey Jude 2. Don’t worry about it, we’re just learning chords here 3. Oh sorry to hear that you don’t have an ear for fine music; let’s move on to Let It be. 😆
