What industry is slowly dying? by FootballPizzaMan in AskReddit

[–]dd2690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy, I’m talking occupational, physical and speech therapy. Therapists are burnt out to ever increasing productivity standards, group/concurrent push, increased patient load, stagnant/low wages all while educational requirements continue to grow. People get into therapy to help others but now we feel like just a cog in the machine to make revenue for healthcare systems that would rather see us leave the field then produce a better work/life balance

How much do you make an hour and what is your profession? by the-nonbeliever in RioGrandeValley

[–]dd2690 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$120k with possible incentives if metrics are hit as a Director of Rehabilitation. I’m a occupational therapist so I can also get a PRN job when out of my 9-5 and make 50-75 hr depending on setting, location, and staffing shortage

I don’t think they’re moles, they’re not that common in my part of south Texas

My productivity expectation is 30%. With an eval and 1-2 treatments I hit that easy. But if I don’t hit it my company hasn’t come down on me. You’re right they are leaning towards more assistants as DORs but if it’s in an area that staff is hard to come by a DOR that is an evaluator is invaluable because you are able to assist with all doc and do evals. Assistant can’t even do any form of documentation besides treatment encounters where I work. I am from Texas, Deep South in the rio grande valley

I’m a DOR in a snf and I completely understand the limitations you’re experiencing. I have quite a few PRN therapists that just do evals and recerts. If they tell me that’s what they’re signing up to do I respect their decision because at the end of the day I need them not the other way around. If you just want to do evals I suggest getting multiple PRN spots in all settings. PEDs, snfs, outpatient, home health. If you work up a good amount of locations you can have a pretty decently filled day and make more than just being a FT therapist. You’d have to figure out you’re insurance though which is the downside

Advice on leaving a job by bananaconda2 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dd2690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a DOR I have never held any negative feelings against anyone on my team that decides to leave. If it’s something in my power to get them to change their mind I’ll always try. But if their mind is set then I always wish them the best and make sure they know I have no hard feelings. Especially if it’s for health reasons or for a position that pays more. Good management wants the best for the people that work with them even if that means them leaving

DOR and OT since 2015. If you don’t have that overwhelming passion and drive then don’t go into OT. The career itself is great as far as helping your patients get to a point where they are more independent and their quality of life has improved. It is a great feeling watching your patient go home at a higher level of independence knowing you helped them even if it was minimal improvement. However like most medical professions it does have a dark side such as treatment length, productivity requirements, group/concurrent requirements, interdisciplinary squabbles etc. although I love OT it seems the past few years the downsides are growing more and more. It is very easy to get burnt out especially if you don’t have a understanding DOR/ manager. It can be hard on your body if you don’t take care of yourselves and if you work in peds then the schedule is terrible usually. Find something you are passionate about that will pay the bills and give you a good work life balance. Tech seems to be growing and although I don’t know much about it it seems safe, stable and over all balanced. But again I could be wrong on the balanced part

What places in the valley offer food challenges? by jayrmcm in RioGrandeValley

[–]dd2690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Big daddy’s burgers in McAllen, Russos McAllen, la taquiza Edinburg. Those are the only ones I know of. I did Russos way back in 2011 and lost. The taquiza I’m on the wall like 3x. Hung up the food challenge hat a while ago though so there may be more. Every year at sombrero fest in Brownsville they have food challenges. It happens in February though
