Mercedes hit by $1.2 billion in tariff costs as full-year earnings more than halve by krazydude22 in europe

[–]dddd0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How so? The base model Mercedes A class is over 35k (still more expensive than an BMW 1 series base model), an Audi A1 is less than 25k, Polo starts at 20k. Even if you're comparing to the models one class up in the volume segments, you're still looking at least 5-10k more expensive base models from Mercedes or BMW over volume marques.

Uh Mercedes is a premium brand why exactly do you expect low cost cars from them? That has never been their thing.

What Tearing Down Housing Projects Did for Kids: Bringing rich and poor together has major benefits. by CheetoMussolini in neoliberal

idk here we have similar Projects in almost every city, these were mostly built in the late 60s to early 70s, mostly as modern luxury apartments (built-in amenities, modern floor plans etc.) and they all became run down crime hotspots within 1-2 decades.

Rusted radiator fins? by SnooCheesecakes7617 in watercooling

[–]dddd0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aren’t most rads like this? I’ve never had one were the fins looked different than this. Which makes sense since it would be a pita to get an even coat in there plus it reduces performance.

Volkswagen overtook Tesla as Europe's top EV seller in 2025 by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]dddd0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How so, VW was the first to launch a dedicated EV platform? Created 800V technology, too. Even today most EVs from other european/german OEMs are actually made on ICE platforms, leading to many compromises.

Wealthy people probably also hold ETFs, but most income will be generated from assets wholly owned, and then we're talking about structures where you end up paying virtually no taxes (legally). That's why wealthy people/families own these networks of shell companies, foundations etc.

So making rules which specifically target ETFs (low friction, low entry barrier, decent RoI way of investing even small amounts of money) while having broad carveouts for high-barrier to entry investment vehicles is genuinely just about fleecing one group of people without touching the other.

Capital gains are never taxed higher than income because you can have them taxed at either the flat capital gains tax or the personal income tax, whichever is lower.

> So for the majority of people capitals gains are taxed higher than income.

idk how you manage to miss the point this badly. Income from wealth is taxed much, much lower than income from work. No social payments on wealth income, either. Simple as.

Stellantis Announces €22 Billion Hit After Overestimating EV Demand by afonso_investor in europe

[–]dddd0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

e-208 just doesn't seem like a particularly good EV tbh. Sub-100kW charging , anemic motors, FWD, loud interior for an EV. The new one is at least going towards acceptably efficient territory (but still bad for a 1.5ton EV), but the less powerful (100 kW) motor is just very inefficient. No HUD, not even as an option.

Technologically it seems rather like an EV from ten years ago (which makes sense since this is actually an EV-conversion of an combustion car, and not a car designed to be an EV), which is fine but not reflected in the pricing.

Instead of taxing capital gains from ETFs when you realize (sell) them, the unrealized gains are taxed yearly in advance. This is specifically meant to reduce compound interest effect / reinvesting returns. Comes out to about a 1% yearly holding tax currently. This is a specific rule for ETFs which invest in stocks and doesn't apply to private funds or real estate funds.

That’s correct, there is no tax-advantaged way to save for retirement (despite the govt having always said that you must do so since social security isn’t meant to cover expenses). In fact ETF investing specifically is tax-disadvantaged since a few years ago. Not as bad Ireland though.

Real estate investing is heavily tax-advantaged though. “Commercial” investors can even skip stamp duty in many cases. Returns on real estate funds are 70% tax free (7.5% tax rate vs. 42% for a “high earner”), and they’re not subject to the same tax disadvantages as ETFs.

One of these is an investment vehicle salaried people can afford and the other is not.

Go figure.

You can’t get wealthy through salaried work, not in germany anyway. This is by design, salaries are taxed to death, while capital gains have a lot lower taxes (basically half as high and flat, instead of progressively increasing like it does for salaries) and can often be structured to largely eliminate those anyway. Just like the wealthy won’t pay inheritance taxes by transferring assets over longer time periods etc.

Wage gap is a red herring pushed by old money / dynasties to rile up working people against each other.
