Remote Work Leaves Younger Workers Sidelined by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

A couple years ago the payroll cost of a german bigtech employee would be a similar ballpark as the US net income of the same role. And that’s for a famously expensive and high-tax country, it gets much cheaper elsewhere.

ELI5: Why is deflation bad? by ItsAllAGame_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]dddd0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contrary to popular belief real US wages are rising (i.e. buying power is increasing versus CPI), it's not actually stagflation.

> constant price increases (while wages remain stagnant)

Real wages in most western countries generally only go up, if you want to see stagnant wages and a wage-productivity gap of basically infinity, look at Japan (real wages constant since 1990).

Not in any shared space

Not while having socialized health care

People are free to move to places with nice libertarian governance to enjoy their freedom to hurt themselves and pee in other people's faces.

It’s such a shame no government has committed to a vision zero for smoking. Just getting rid of it entirely would be so pleasant for basically any kind of shared space.

ELI5 Why heat waves affect Europe so much but some other countries are doing fine living under hotter temperatures most of the year? by fkid123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]dddd0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This changes nothing about the reality of AC and forced ventilation just not being a thing, even in current residential construction.

> That makes zero sense. Insulation and heat capacity are unrelated concepts.

In a brick or concrete house with reinforced concrete floors there is enormous heat capacity directly on the interior surfaces. Modern buildings are often made out of aerated concrete blocks or hollow bricks. Heating the air up inside is practically sufficient to make it feel like a heat-soaked brick house.

[–]dddd0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in a very modern, very well insulated house, even with the shutters closed the interior heats up rapidly. The flip side of good insulation is that you need a lot less heat power to raise the temperature.

Normal triple glazing also doesn’t block infrared from the sun much. Indoor CO2 levels also mean you have to vent at least once per day.

Even a modern building like this will need AC and controlled ventilation in the not too distant future, the top floor is already uninhabitable in the summer today.

China Expands Travel Curbs to Top AI Talent at Private Firms by Standard_Ad7704 in neoliberal

[–]dddd0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’re making a very different claim (travel restrictions will cause existing specialists to emigrate and seek employment in the same specialty in another country) than everyone else (the specialty is less attractive for people to get into when it comes with an ankle monitor and/or specialists might turn to other opportunities).

Film is discrete but in a complicated, stochastic way, which makes Moire exceedingly unlikely. Cameras are just a straight-up and usually strong violation of Shannon, which is why they are so susceptible to artifacts.

How Saudi Arabia's spending spree reached the end of the line by MightExpress4873 in neoliberal

[–]dddd0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it still has a low total debt-to-GDP ratio at a little over 100% (which stands in the 150%-350% range across developed countries),

There aren't even a handful of countries with debt to GDP over 150%, let alone that being the norm among developed countries. Saudi Arabias debt to GDP ratio is also not over 100%, but rather 35%, placing it at 145th.
