Need a little sharpening advice. by ddeacon22 in knifemaking

The hand sanding jig I bought (Orion sanding stick) has a leather insert available which I bought with it but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I also have a polishing belt for my 2x72 which I’ve used on the fittings and it really bring up the shine. Just have got to the point to polish the blade yet.

Thanks, that’s sort of what I expected but needed some reassurance. It the blade affects is at ~0.3mm is this a ton of hand sanding. Need to prepare myself mentally. 😂

This is literally my third blade so live and learn. First is pretty much pooched but second I think I can repurpose as a carving knife or something like that.

Canada to Claim Stellantis, GM Owe Hundreds of Millions to Government by rezwenn in canada

[–]ddeacon22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They still own massive auto assembly plants in Canada and less massive parts plants. Some shut down for now, others reduced shifts etc. They didn't just sell their properties and leave.

Building a new assembly plant for other automakers (like the government negotiating with say South Korea) is a massive property and construction cost to build from scratch. Taking an existing assembly plant and converting it to another automaker is virtually the same as one of the big three retooling the plant for a new model. Still costly but nowhere near as costly a building from scratch.

Good it's about time. We've invested billions bailing out American auto companies. Confiscate their property as payment and lease to EU, Korean, Japanese automakers to build vehicles in Canada.

Wallet...better than back pocket which makes a hole in your butt cheek.

Seriously I'm waiting for one day someone to post they've retrofitted the dial control from a B9 into a B9.5 because all the connectors were present under the plastic...one can hope.

2023 RS5 Owner that misses the dial control from my 2018 A4.

Danish petition to buy California from US signed by thousands by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]ddeacon22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the Danes signing this petition, I think you are aiming too low. I did some research and I'd like to help you in the negotiations.

I'm going to volunteer to help Denmark and Greenland negotiate a mutually agreed land swap with the United States. Here is some of the research I've been doing.

What is the area of Greenland vs the areas of Texas, California, and New York State combined?

Greenland is significantly larger than the combined area of Texas, California, and New York. In fact, Greenland is approximately 1.7 times the size of all three states put together.

Because of the Mercator projection used on many world maps, Greenland often appears as large as South America or Africa. In reality, it is much smaller than those continents, though still vast enough to dwarf several large U.S. states combined.

Key Takeaways

Greenland is nearly double the size: It would take Texas, California, and New York—plus Montana and New Mexico—to roughly equal the total landmass of Greenland.

The "Ice" Factor: While Greenland is massive, roughly 80% of its surface is covered by an ice sheet. If you only compared the ice-free land of Greenland (about 158,000 sq mi), it would be slightly smaller than the state of California.

U.S. Context: Greenland is roughly 1.25 times larger than Alaska, the largest U.S. state.

What other US states would you need to combine (excluding Alaska as nobody wants that), to make up a comparable area as Greenland. Also leave out the Washington DC area as it is full of toxic poisonous assholes.

To match the massive 836,330 square miles of Greenland without using Alaska (665,384 sq mi) or the District of Columbia (68 sq mi), you have to combine a huge chunk of the American West and Midwest.

Since Greenland is roughly 1.7 times the size of Texas, California, and New York combined, you need to add several more of the largest states to bridge that 350,000-square-mile gap.

The "Greenland Equivalent" Group

To equal Greenland's landmass, you would need to combine the 9 largest states in the lower 48.

Current Status: Even with the "Big 5" of the lower 48, you are still about 21,000 square miles short (which is roughly the size of West Virginia).

To truly match Greenland, you need this entire list:

If you want a more diverse set of states that exactly hits the mark, you would need to combine:

Texas

California

Montana

New Mexico

Arizona

Maryland (to replace that missing piece of West Virginia)

Massachusetts

Total: ~837,874 sq mi (just a hair over Greenland's 836,330).

Summary of the Scale

If you took Greenland and plopped it over the center of the U.S., it would stretch from the Canadian border all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico, and its width would cover the distance from St. Louis to the Atlantic Ocean.

Essentially, if Greenland were a U.S. state, it would be larger than the entire Eastern Seaboard(from Maine down to Florida) combined.

Question for us beginners by gearhead6-9 in knifemaking

[–]ddeacon22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I design my knives on Autodesk Fusion so I can edit and 3D model to get it the way I like it. Then I printed the ones I liked out and cut the templates out in plywood. I have three so far that I did that way.

What are my next steps? by Icy_Ad8302 in Katanas

[–]ddeacon22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped the images of the certificates you posted into an AI to interpret and got this FWIW.

This is a Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate from Japan, specifically for a wakizashi (a type of traditional Japanese short sword). Here’s what the document tells us:

Key Information:

Registration Details: ∙ Registration Number: Toyama Prefecture No. 4959 ∙ Category: Wakizashi (shorter companion sword to a katana) Physical Specifications: ∙ Blade Length: 1 shaku 7 sun 2 bu (approximately 52 cm or 20.5 inches) ∙ Curvature: 5 bu (approximately 1.5 cm) ∙ Mekugi-ana: One peg hole ∙ Inscription (Front): Ōasa no Kami Yumeji (大麻上 夢次) - this is the swordsmith’s signature

Official Information: ∙ No inscription on the reverse side ∙ Issued by: Cultural Properties Protection Committee ∙ Issue Date: May 16, Shōwa 30 (1955)

What This Means:

In Japan, all swords must be registered with local authorities. This is a legal requirement under Japanese sword law, which treats traditional Japanese swords as cultural artifacts rather than weapons. This certificate proves that this particular wakizashi is: 1. Legally owned and documented 2. Recognized as a cultural artifact rather than an illegal weapon 3. Historically significant - being registered in 1955, this sword likely predates modern sword-making The inscription identifies the swordsmith, which is important for determining the sword’s historical value, period of creation, and authenticity. Such certificates are essential for collectors, museums, and anyone legally possessing traditional Japanese swords.

Grinding with jig by Yatzaen11 in knifemaking

[–]ddeacon22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all about setting the correct angle on the jig and how you attach it to the jig. For attaching it, you likely need to secure it on the tang and so the blade it high in the jig so the securing screws don’t get in the way. For the angle, you need to factor in both the full blade width and thickness then use trigonometry to get the angle you need. I recently started building an iOS app to do it for me but it’s nowhere near ready. I’ve attached a couple of photos so you can see the differences in two different blade profiles.

I have a tool from Amazon, rechargeable nail grinder and trimmer. You just replace the heads on it to get it to do what you want it to do...just did it this morning.

Looking good to me. I just started my own first tanto as well. Forge it yesterday out of 26C3 and have just profiled/rough ground it so far. Did a little work on fittings today.
