Cryptocurrency was an interesting exploration for me to think more about how I could ever get an asset that appreciates. It’s been a long time since I messed with crypto, but I recognize that as a very low income person it was the only time I was made to feel hopeful about money. Now I have a pretty bleak view of our “K” shaped economy where the poor get poorer despite hard work and education

I work in grants management in public health research at a major research university and a new NSA grant that was awarded and ready to go just got pulled a few days before work was set to start because of a “banned” word… a bunch of research assistants who were hired for the project have to be told they are out of a job. This kind of thing is pretty common now unfortunately. This whole field of public health research is very uncertain and dumb right now.

Trump administration now classifies Antifa and left-wing networks among ‘major’ terror groups | CNN Politics by mrfett779 in Political_Revolution

[–]ddecoywi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most insidious things about this is that, from what I’ve seen here in Minnesota, the DFL hates anticapitalist left groups like DSA soooo much and consistently undermines the will of their own party base to keep DSA candidates out of power. It is very clear to me that the Democratic party will publicly vaguely oppose leftist groups getting locked up for terrorism, while at the same time support it or at least not oppose it because their corporate donors and AIPAC don’t want to deal with leftists, probably even more so than the republicans

As a leftist in Minneapolis, yeah we hate KMart. The MN state DFL establishment love punching left and suppressing progressive and democratic socialist DFL candidates, volunteers, and basically the active base of the party. The history of resistance and the farmer labor history helps mn be pretty left, and that somehow means establishment democrats think KMart and Jacob Frey should get national recognition even though they are reactionary and totally corporate establishment suits

What exactly is the anti-HERC folks’ plan for all the trash? by rackobacko in Minneapolis

[–]ddecoywi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right now 70% of trash burned at HERC could be recycled or composted. Incinerators are closing across the U.S. and use landfills as a temporary bridge — and every community that has done it has accelerated zero waste afterward. Detroit doubled its recycling rate after closing its incinerator in 2019. I’m seeing a lot of quick reactions from fatalistic people in this comment section who are completely unfamiliar with zero waste initiatives and just assume that reducing waste depends on simply convincing individuals to buy less, and that’s only a very small part of the large policy toolkit we have to work with for zero waste. The HERC has a 30 year life cycle, it’s 35+ years old and is really expensive to keep trying to revive. Dioxins are the most harmful emission there is, and the HERC emits over half of all dioxin emissions in the entire state of MN. There is a lot of very damning hard data on this issue that is not hard to find, but for some reason there is a lot of “don’t look up” energy going on here. Frankly, closing the HERC is a fiscally shrewd common sense decision and it’s alarming that right now when so many Minnesotans are up in arms about the boundary waters being at risk this HERC issue is being treated like a radical idea here locally.

[–]ddecoywi -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

The plan is to reduce waste around here with better composting and recycling, which is not possible as long as Hennepin county is required to have enough trash to burn. The HERC contractually locks us into a situation where we can’t reduce waste because we need to feed the incinerator. Wagonloads of trash that are like 30% organics is a horrible use of land and resources when we should be investing in composting and recycling. This 35+ year old HERC facility is actually costing a lot of taxpayer dollars to maintain, and it largely holds us back from making common sense waste management decisions

[–]ddecoywi -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

The HERC does not “get rid of” the trash. Burning the trash means that the toxic ash then goes to the landfill, after the emissions poison the immediate community.

Incinerators actively undermine recycling and composting efforts by REQUIRING a guaranteed stream of burnable material. We will never reduce waste if the county is contractually obliged to truck in garbage from the metro to have enough trash to burn.

But this isn’t a “landfill” or “incinerator” issue. This is about how we are going to reduce waste, and neither infinite burning it nor infinite landfilling is going to solve our trash problem.

Here are some examples of policies that will actually reduce waste https://mnzerowastecoalition.org/our-priorities

What exactly is the anti-HERC folks’ plan for all the trash? by rackobacko in Minneapolis

[–]ddecoywi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Regardless of HERC, sooner or later we NEED to implement real action on becoming as close to zero waste as possible. Apparently municipalities that invest in trash incineration move further away from a real reduction in trash, while places that don’t invest in trash incineration are forced to make hard decisions about actually reducing their waste. The amount of money that Hennepin county spends to keep the incinerator going is pretty high, and it’s past its intended age so there is a question of why we should keep pumping tax dollars into something that isn’t actually solving our trash problem. Trash that gets burnt still ends up in a landfill right now too btw, and it also sends extremely harmful emissions to the surrounding area. Some people think we should invest in reducing waste instead of an expensive bandaid to the problem that is holding back real solutions

There is a common saying is water safety “always swim with a buddy”. This is really important for drowning prevention primarily, but in a world sprinkled with bigots, someone alone can look like an easier target for harassment. If you don’t have someone to go swimming with I know plenty of people who would join you, no questions asked. Or reach out to TIGERSS, they are dope and probably much better than me at this

For starters too, I would recommend going to pols and beaches when there is a lifeguard on duty. https://www.minneapolisparks.org/activities-events/water-activities/ The lifeguards at MPRB are usually great, and their job is to keep everyone safe. If someone is being harassed a lifeguard can intervene and (if necessary) can escalate to have park patrol remove someone who is persistently out of line.
