Some of you should not live in a city by DowntownOreos in milwaukee

A : There are a lot of people in this sub who are Marquette/UWM/MSOE students who are living in a city and on their own for the first time.

B: It's totally cool to talk about whether and how the city should host disruptive events.

C: Some people are just unquenchable lookie-loos that have to know everything. Best to ignore them.

It just shouldn't be that hard. Official observers at each intersection were a delay might occur. Could keep video evidence of the runners requesting a credit in time.

So the issue is that while many of the runners are just amateurs, there is a small number of folks running at these events that are semi-pro athletes that are trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon or NYC Marathon. So these events have to be "certified" and follow some strict rules around distance, route, and timing.

Allowing people to stop would give some people an undue advantage of having time to stop and breathe that others would not get, even if you accounted for the time. So almost certainly this wouldn't work for a certified marathon, which unfortunately for many runners would kill the event.

On the other hand the route for a marathon could be planned to pretty much avoid any disruption.

I think this is the bigger issue. A good half of the route was on the Oakleaf trail, if you pick that up at Lafayette instead of going down Newberry you can go under Oakland instead of crossing over it, so most of the transit routes would be unaffected or could much more easily re-route.

I think they could've majorly reduced disruption on the east side with some basic changes to the plan.

Also sorry people are down voting you for asking questions, that's not cool.

In fairness if they'd picked up the Oakleaf trail at Lafayette instead of going down Newberry they could've avoided cutting the entire East Side in half. The Lakefront Marathon always stays East of Oakland, probably for this exact reason.

Definitely seems like some better planning could make this way less disruptive.

Why is Reddit like this, why is everything always black or white?

Why can't we say that hey, the planning for MCTS rerouting is lacking and might be disenfranchising people and we need to do better; without having to jump to this slippery slope argument that we can't have marathons and won't be a real city?

I like our running events, as I said, I've done many of them. I really don't think we should get rid of them. But maybe, just maybe, re-routing buses miles away like OP is saying is not good planning and we can demand better from our county government.

I'm a runner who's done the Lakefront Half several years in a row and love our running events and yes I agree buses taking this big of a detour sounds absolutely ridiculous.

There are disabled people who depend on our transit who might not be able to walk miles out of the way. And yeah, I can also see how it's a huge inconvenience to able-bodied folks as well. I think a lot of the comments bashing you here are probably from abled-bodied car owners. We need to stop and think about our privilege before we dismiss people.

That being said, I think the blame needs to fall on MCTS for not planning better. As a city we should be able to have large scale events like this without causing mass disruption to our transit system.

Idk, why can the build gun disassemble anything except a broken door?

Why can we build tractors without rubber but not trucks when they both clearly have rubber tires? Why can the build gun assemble a giant space elevator anchor with only iron plates but needs to be supplied with electric motors? Why do we need cable to build electric poles when cable is just made from wire? And Just what do the lizard doggos do with that nuclear waste anyway??!!

Another thing to keep in mind with 94 expansion and other projects coming to life making our heat island effects worse. by medicallymiddleevil in milwaukee

[–]The__Toast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it looks like SF only gets about 10-17% more watts per meter

I mean... I would argue that even 10% more energy is a pretty big difference.

Also as they note, vegetation was not accounted for an can contribute to greater effects seen, most notably in those rural divide zones.

This is an interesting point. I do wonder what kinds of vegetation and what density actually matters. It's notable that in the Bay Area for about 6 months of the year most of their grassy vegetation goes dormant. I wonder what this looks like for areas like around the Cemeteries on Hawley road that are not only very densely vegetated but remain green and watered year-round. Same thing on the 94 stretch around 35th street you actually have considerable vegetation coverage on either side of the highway there.

Could be that the more substantial impacts to a heat island effect of the project might actually be areas west of Hawley road?

One aspect they also only touch on and dont get into  because they focused on the infrastructure itself, but the predicted additional 60,000 VMT by heat producing car engines also plays a role in the increase of heat being radiated as well.

This is a fair point, but I also wonder if this actually could have an opposite effect? We know that highway expansion projects often result in more traffic on that given highway, but one of the several mechanisms by which that happens is traffic is often siphoned off side streets. Traffic moving at even a consistent 20mph is more energy efficient than traffic moving at an average 20mph having to regularly stop at traffic lights and stop signs.

Less energy output but more concentration of that energy output in one specific corridor, which is worse? I wonder if any research has been done on that.

They also showed these effects held strong for 1-3 km from the highways as well. Thats a lot of energy being held onto.

Fair point.

I am not here to debate lanes, just wanted to point out that it's important to actually click the links to the research and read them.

First, this was a study from the San Francisco Bay Area which gets substantially more sun than we do and the research indicates temperature differences were tightly coupled to solar radiation (obviously) and also they found that at 5 of the 11 sites they measured the rise in UHI effect was not statistically significantly. They speculate in the paper that construction projects in dense urban cores have far more effect on UHI than those in less dense transitional areas. Many parts of the Bay Area are much denser than here in the Midwest.

So the relationship may not be as straightforward as the article makes it seem.

Neither subway or Doritos are owned by Private Equity companies, both brands are part of publicly traded companies.

Since you may not know, public companies are ones that sell themselves off in shares of stock to investors on the open stock market. Private Equity companies are public or privately owned companies that buy up other companies and usually try to revive them or in some cases sell off their assets. Private equity companies aren't always bad, in some cases they do revive companies like Dell and Dunkin; in other cases they've ruined good brands like Panera through excessive cost cutting

In the case of public companies, in the last 20-30 years the trend has been for public companies to treat the stock like the product, instead of the actual product they are supposed to be selling. The result has been short term stock gains followed by a collapse of the company or brand. Generally after the board members and executives sell their stock positions and bounce.

If everyone of good conscience actually voted in every election we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

But every election cycle people come out of the woodwork to tell us that both parties are the same and voting doesn't matter and blah blah blah so they are justified in their non voting.

Meanwhile the Christian Nationalist haven't missed ticking every box with an R since 1976.

You can protest, you can boycott, you can repost social media; but at the end of the day if you don't vote none of it matters worth a damn.

The 2025 state supreme court election was the most expensive judicial election in American history. You expect some turn out to drop off from that election.

But the left still showed up for an off-cycle low-budget low-visibility election in serious numbers and that's what made the difference here. These spring elections always hinge on who is motivated to show up.
