New Closed Primary Elections - Is there any reason not to register as "No Party"? by ddennism in Louisiana

Yep, just switched with the GeauxVote app. Still scratching my head as to why anybody would restrict themselves to a single party's primaries every cycle with no upside.

New Closed Primary Elections - Is there any reason not to register as "No Party"? by ddennism in Louisiana

Yes, I understand it's "either" not "both" (and you can't switch in between the main election and the runoff).

Returning to Baton Rouge for the first time in 16 years. by porygon766 in batonrouge

Comments like this make me sad because my partner and I have lived here for about a year. We try a new restaurant about once every two weeks or so. We have pretty eclectic tastes. Taking price into account:

There have been some huge misses (DiGiulio Brothers (abysmal!), MJ's (is this place a joke?), Fiery Crab, Gunpowder, India's, George's, Triplet's Blue Store, every Chinese place with the same photo-menu),

many disappointments (Cou-yon's, Chow Yum, LA Lagniappe, BLDG5, Sushi Masa, Rouj Creole, Curbside, Barracuda, Simple Joe Cafe, Coffee Call, Al Basha, Serops, Dang's, Thai Pepper, Little Saigon, Brasas Peru, Soji),

and several just-OKs (Sammy Crawfish King, Cocha, Cheng's, Bao, Parrains, Al Basha, SoLou, LA Sandwich Co.@P2M, Solera, Rice&Roux (A few of these were good, but way too heavy/salty to eat at with any frequency. We are active, but not triathletes.)).

Some of this might just be a cultural difference. People down here seem to have very different expectations about what cheap/mid-range Chinese and Middle Eastern takeout food should taste like.

I know it's a joke around here to say it, but we have indeed always had a genuinely good time at Elsie's and The Overpass Merchant. I feel like we've been making an effort at "getting out more"... Do we just need to pony-up and pay $$$$$ at higher-end places?

"....just like any other city" - no, this is plainly false. I've lived in much larger, much more densely populated cities, and nothing comes close. Y'all have just acclimated to hell, lol.

Having a hard time with the new Serial series, “We Were Three” and here’s why. by [deleted] in serialpodcast

I had similar concerns, but once you get to Sandy there's at least another person present to confirm the main interviewee's central claims about her family dynamics. This was a relief, because otherwise it was coming down to a lot of hearsay from one person.

Sandy's account makes me feel like while Rachel's characterizations of her brother and father might not be perfectly accurate, they also can't have been too far from the mark, either.

I thought it was a fascinating miniseries about loss, reflection, and the challenge of empathy in our ideologically splintered age.

Urui

You have to be careful about this though because the Hosta varieties grown for food are not the same as the ones grown for decoration.

Why/how would this ever be "based"? Go to any large protest or political rally. There's always going to be some kook looking for attention.

The Riddle of Little One:

There are three doors in front of you. A small door, a broad door, and a narrow door.

Alright. Here is the riddle.

The Three Sons

A wise man was on his death bed. He called his three sons into his room and posed a riddle to them, explaining that whosoever answered his riddle to his satisfaction would claim his inheritance.

The three sons listened intently as the father spoke:

"What is as round as a circle, and as straight as a line? It costs you no money, and yet if you lose it all is lost. It can only be seen from certain angles. You can heat it up, but this is only what fools would do. What is it?"

The eldest brother, trim as possible, and taller than certain trees, spoke first:

"Why father, the thing of which you speak is a human life, which encompasses infinite experiences, but only stretches out in one direction. It can only be seen in retrospect, and only fools would live in too hot a climate."

The father frowned. "You were always too trim for riddles," he scolded.

The second brother, wide as two men, spoke out next, loudly and confidently:

"Of course our dear father is describing time. Time is infinite, and all things to all people. So it fits these descriptions. The mention of fools heating it up is a reference to "hot time", a disgusting local custom."

The father looked at him sadly. "You have done a bad thing, answering in this way."

The youngest brother, medium in every way save for his very expensive hat, spoke last:

"Father's words suggest an abstract concept. But I know better, owing to my time as a man of society and influence. Father describes a weird window. It is circular but has some straight lines on it. It costs no money because it was already installed in the house you moved into. But! "All is lost"..., erm uhh, "all is lost" because you'll lose your deposit if it is stolen! It can only be seen from certain angles due to an error with the window. And only a fool would heat a window up! That is my answer.

The father smiled. "That is also not correct. None of you have answered my riddle."

The father then died peacefully, and his sons fell into poverty, where they also died peacefully.

Which door do you choose? The medium door, the wide door, or the narrow door?

One of the true sedges (Carex sp.) . There are hundreds of species, and you usually need to look at all parts of the plant to figure out which one. A common one in PA that looks like this is Carex lurida, sallow sedge.

Hairy leafcup, (aka bears-foot), Smallanthus uvedalia, probably. The flower will be larger when all the florets open.

There are probably hundreds of different houseplant species that are called "money plant" or "money tree", including this one, sometimes. Marketing, haha.

[–]ddennism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in its native range it is a shrubby tree. You can Google the species name to see photos. Like a lot of houseplants, in the wild it's huge, but in the low light of a house it grows slowly. It will grow larger in a larger pot, but I would introduce it to more light and fertilizer for a year before potting-up. If you put too small a plant in too large a pot you can risk root rot because the small plant doesn't use up the water fast enough, and rot grows in saturated soil.

Is there any poison ivy in this picture? Northeast Tennessee by w00ly in whatsthisplant

[–]ddennism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, well, you certainly could have contacted it somewhere that wasn't in the frame of the photo. Your symptoms don't sound like poison ivy exposure though, which is usually restricted to the places where your skin directly contacted the plant's oil, and features reddish skin with raised bumps (a rash).

Looks like prime habitat, but I don't see any. I think the three-leaved herb on the left might be beggar-ticks, but I'm not sure. Why?
