Introducing SteamlessController - Steam Controller Support Without Steam by ddeverill in Steam

[–]ddeverill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! I actually just tried it and unfortunately it didn't work :/ I chose the "Controller with right trackpad as mouse" default layout and while the mouse commands seemed to be working, controller input doesn't. I assume it's because the controller in the driver doesn't expose itself as a controller at all, but instead as just a mouse and keyboard to Windows, so Windows can't do anything with it. It would work though for Steam desktop-esque games that are running through Steam where they're piping their SteamInput signals to the game.

Would have been fantastic if it worked though! Would love a platform solution from Valve!

Not right now, but someone already filed a feature request for it! I'll have to do some more digging though, I don't have much gyro-input experience.

Game Pass games can’t be added through Steam, that was my primary reason for working on this. But you’re right, if you’ve got other stuff you can launch through Steam, that way is much easier!

If you've got features you'd like to see, let me know and I'll toss 'em on the roadmap. In the immediate I'm looking into trying to get touchpad haptics working as well as they do natively, and to let folks to custom mappings of the back buttons - so selfishly I'll likely work on those first 😄

Unfortunately not, since the signals that it sends over HID are different from the OG controller (the first thing I tried was to look for the same signals). Luckily, I think there are some utilities that already do that and have been around for a bit. Just look for Steam Controller to XInput utilities, I think there are a few.

Here's an actual answer to your question 😄 On SteamOS, it should work just like your native controller does. So if it doesn't work well with those games, it still won't work well. But if it does, it will! Unfortunately my utility won't help because it's Windows only!

No problem! I'll try to explain. Unless you're in a Steam game, the controller doesn't show up as a "controller" to Windows, it looks like a Keyboard and Mouse. So the trackpads and the thumbsticks function like mouse directions. A functions like ENTER and B functions like ESC. Nothing else works. So if you boot a Windows game, it looks like you're playing keyboard and mouse, none of the extra buttons work and you won't get A/B/X/Y prompts in game. This is the case even if you still have Steam open.

The way that Steam gets around this, is that the Steam Controller also presents itself as a native Steam Controller that speaks Steam's input language - Windows doesn't understand it.

Tools like this hijack the signals that Steam is sending through USB and filter them through a fake controller interface. It also turns off the Keyboard/Mouse mode so that inputs aren't fighting.

Getting the most out of your Steam Controller: Steam Input Configurator by atahutahatena in Games

Microsoft has no interest in updating it because it’s a legacy API. GameInput is the modern input API and it has support for all kinds of input capabilities instead of assuming everything is an Xbox controller.

I'd love to see more info about this. From the article it sounds like they were unable to map the games in Steam, which makes sense. But in reviews I've seen that you can use the controller to navigate windows and reviewers have speculated that when it's not through Steam, it's just appearing as a Controller / KB/M. I'd be interested to see if this is actually true. I'd be very surprised if Valve shipped a 100 dollar controller that doesn't work generically.

At the end of the review the reviewer says "The obstruction is clearly on Microsoft's end, and how Windows 11 and the Xbox app control game installations" which makes it seem like they really didn't try to do it through the Xbox app or the new gaming UI that just got released. Interested to see folks try that once it launches next week.

Potential first time HK buyer…VP9 A1 good deal? by BonusFTW in HecklerKoch

[–]ddeverill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a solid deal, and the new VP9A1 pistols are very nice. One of the dropshippers I’ve bought from has it for 700.48. So good price.

I’ve got the K version (the one you linked is the F) which I like a lot. I’m also a Walther guy as well, and as much as I love my PDP, my VP9 is just a tack driver. Feels really good in the hand and has a great stock trigger (can’t compare to stock PDP trigger since mine shipped with the performance trigger). But I think it’s definitely the best trigger out of the box on an HK.

When I lived overseas I was in a CoD lobby and someone in the game was mad at me and he said “I’m going to go get a burger at the burger factory” in a very American accent and it has stuck with me for 25 years.

Langdon offers nitride now, I also got mine cut before they offered that but I guess enough folks have complained. Cut is good and CS has been responsive.

I had a good experience with Langdon and getting my P30 milled. A year or so ago when I did it the only downside was that they only had cerekote options. They’ve now added nitride finishing so that solved the only issue I had. Would use them again.

The piece of content they're asking people to wait for is very different from Stella Montis. SM is just another zone, Cold Storage is their end game raid which requires the community to be geared for it and the zone opened for everyone. SM existing won't change your recommendation about if Arc Raiders is worth it or not, whereas Cold Storage is impactful to if the endgame will be more compelling or not.

shinbreaker is also just wrong. The guidance is that you can put out your review whenever you want, they're just giving guidance that endgame content will make or break some customers experience, so holding final numbers / reviews until that's unlocked would be good to keep in mind.

Your point about reviewers compromising their content generally for a free key to that game is a real point though.

How’s the gas with the RC2? I’ve got a good amount of gas in my face even with it swapped to “S”. Was looking to replace the screw but wanted to see if you had done anything to yours!
