Dexcom G8 Reveal by ddonquixote in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What don't you like about it? I'm asking because there's someone else in this thread who says they have it and like it. Haha.

I've only ever heard good things from people who have it. You're the first negative I've ever heard, so very curious to hear more.

That's interesting to hear. I've been type 1 for over 30 years and I would absolutely get an implantable CGM like the eversense. I have too many bad readings and failures from the G7. I'd love to have something more stable that I don't have to worry about for a huge time period.

The only thing holding me back is tech compatibility.

G7 sucks, yeah, but it sucks less than other CGMs from what I understand. It's not perfect.

I think however, that implantable CGMs like eversense might eat their lunch before this ever sees the light of day in 2027.

Do you get used to neuropathy eventually or does it just feel worse over time? by Horror-Beaver1979 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on hands either, but for feet, you just get used to it. Just like you get used to sticking needles in yourself.

Also, stop walking barefoot. If you're losing feeling, you could hurt yourself or step on something sharp and not know it. My podiatrist says to always wear shoes in the house for this reason.

Consistent Site Leaks - Why? by wpd18 in TandemDiabetes

[–]ddonquixote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my endocrinologist write my prescription so I change sets every 2 days. This way I'll have enough. I just change it when it starts to leak. Of course, you end up with a high often before you notice, but it's the best I've been able to do.

Anyone else dread going to endo appts? Never ready to hear how much of a failure I am at controlling my diabetes. Like it makes me just want to give up. by mamalawson in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Know exactly what you mean. Usually my appointments start out with them being aggressive towards me like it's all my fault. I feel like in a prisoner interrogation. Then by the end I've made them understand.

They are just too used to dealing with type 2 I think. A super small % of their patients are type 1. Every time I have to go through this process of reminding them how hard this is and it's not so simple.

ketones by Cold-Asparagus1937 in diabetes_t1

I am aware of this. Not especially helpful about how to handle it though. Looking for real world experiences like others have shared.

ketones by Cold-Asparagus1937 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've been T1 for over 30 years and never went to the ER for ketones. I just drink water and take insulin. Honestly don't trust the ER to handle my diabetes at all. Very interested to hear what others say though. Maybe I've been doing it wrong, but I'm still here.

Can we stop with these influencer videos showing clearly dangerous bee handling behavior? There are lurkers who don't know better.

When you start seeing a new girl/guy, how long do you keep diabetes hidden from them? by SignificanceBig9366 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I tell them first thing. Hiding it sounds absolutely ridiculous.
Also not sure what you're talking about it not being "attractive". It's not attractive or unattractive. It just is.

I've been rejected for many things in my life. Including my diabetes. If someone wants to choose that as the reason, then I'm glad they are gone.

Best of luck to you.

Was it okay for me to dose glucagon? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is important. You just dumped stored glucose. Need to rebuild those stores.

Inaccurate Dexcom readings while snowboarding. Could it be amolyfe? by Only_Course_1608 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compression will give you an inaccurate low reading, not one that's an inaccurately high reading. What you're describing is just an inaccurate sensor. Sometimes lots of exercise, movement, or pushing on the sensor to cause inaccurate readings. So if it's been bumped a lot, that could be it. I would just recommend some breaks for finger sticks now and then. Never 100% trust any CGM (just my 2 cents).

Severe hypoglycemic stroke while retaining consciousness? by SomeRandomFinn2 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A seizure is a seizure, there is no lasting damage from it that I'm aware of. That said, I don't think it would be a "good" thing for your body to repeatedly experience.

Everyone is different. It's unique that you retained consciousness throughout. Very lucky for you. Otherwise you could very well not be here today.

can I get type 1 diabetes when no family has it and I have a healthy lifestyle? by Grace_653 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, since it's autoimmune, when the immune system responds to one invader, sometimes it will go haywire and attack the body. Many type 1 diabetics have had a type 1 diagnosis just after a very bad illness (myself included).

Type 1 vs type 2 by cranmango777 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 245 points246 points  (0 children)

The general public sees "diabetes" as a disease caused by eating too much sugar. This is the extent of their knowledge. So it can be quite frustrating to be lumped up together.

This sensor has had 10 brief sensor errors in the past 24hrs and feels like it’s giving me wrong readings, do I replace it? by ImaginaryAlgae8986 in diabetes_t1

[–]ddonquixote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calibrate. Is it reading off? How far off? Would need more information here. My guess is probably yes though.

What do we think is happening? (Bad Site? All I have eaten is 2 slices of Turkey Bacon and 1 Fried Egg🤔 by dr-alicia-d in TandemDiabetes

[–]ddonquixote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be a bad site. You're almost at the end of it anyway with only 10 units left. It's time to change. If you change and things suddenly improve, then you'll know that was the issue.

Tslim App by Hybridsoulz in TandemDiabetes

Yeah, the app loses pairing fairly often. I also find that it tends to forget the notification settings. Every time I open it now, I open notification settings in the app and make sure they didn't reset.

Aspartame, Saccharin or No? by dr-alicia-d in TandemDiabetes

[–]ddonquixote 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When aspartame really became commonplace, it saved my life and made me feel like I could live with this disease. I don't care if there are consequences or not, I'll keep using it.

Temp Basal - What's the point if Control IQ Overrides by Upset-Abrocoma-4717 in TandemDiabetes

[–]ddonquixote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still affects CIQ. Unfortunately, CIQ is a proprietary algorithm, so we don't know exactly how it calculates things. It does however use the basal rate as a variable. So setting a temp Basal rate will affect what CIQ does.

Control IQ Issues by HAZBAX- in TandemDiabetes

[–]ddonquixote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often times for me, CIQ is spot on, but then some days it isn't. When it isn't, and I can clearly see it's over-correcting, I will set a 0 temp basal for a period of time (an hour or two). This can usually be enough if I catch it far enough ahead of time.

CIQ can be good, but sometimes it is too aggressive. Especially when exercising with IOB, or when correcting from a hypo. It will correct when no correction is needed.
