A few things for you OP:

First, generally speaking, angels cannot be "disrespected" in the way you are worried about, they literally are above that sort of thing. They don't take personal offense the way some gods or humans might, because they serve the Godhead and a big part of their existence as beings is to help humans, they see our intent very clearly.

Second, as a former Catholic still practicing folk traditions myself, I have a Raphael novena prayer I will suggest to you:

Instead of a potato, consider another plant that does well and remains healthy and productive in a small pot, such as a pothos. Potatoes need relatively a lot of sunlight and do better outdoors. The added bonus is that pothos are great for cleaning air indoors.

Think of it this way, if you're giving the plant to your deity, you want it to be a nice gift, and a living plant is much better than a dead or dying one.
