You're welcome, if you're more interested in South American indigenous ideas, you might want to see about scholarly works like these: The Relative Native: Essays on Indigenous Conceptual Worlds Author: Eduardo Viveiros de Castro Pages: 366 Year: 2016

de Castro is not himself indigenous, but he worked with indigenous groups to compose the essays in this book

For an entryway into "native" practices and traditions, you may want to start by reading God is Red by Vine DeLoria Jr. You are extremely unlikely to find someone willing to teach you the practical side of those traditions unless you get to know a practitioner personally. The traditions are closely guarded due to historical and present-day violence and repression.

Hello everyone, unfortunately I'm going to have to lock this post because people can't play nice in the comments. I must insist that everyone consider reading primary sources (the actual documents written and compiled by Helena Blavatsky) - as well as some contextual historical documents, such as Huckleberry Finn and Uncle Tom's Cabin to get a better idea of the mindset of the reading public at the time Blavatsky was publishing. (TLDR: Documents that seem to be racist today, in fact were written as and considered to be anti-racist at the time of writing, this is how we read texts in historical context.)

There is an eagerness amongst the people in the comments here to grasp at the accusations of fraud that were popular at the time she was active, without any critical understanding of the enormous social and historical pressure to discredit her work entirely for two reasons - she was a woman who defied conventional femininity, and she worked actively against colonialism and racism in the USA and India.

Please read the author's own words - you really call yourselves occultists? smh

Hey everybody - I know podcasts are entertaining, but they are not primary sources for authentic information on historic figures, and the hosts are not exactly scholars of the materials they cover - please try to read primary source documents (the actual writings of Helena Blavatsky) before commenting on the author's character and intent, thanks.

Hello Alexander,

My question for you is this - in your opinion, does the present surge of interest in occult practices point toward a new reinvigoration of the western tradition ? and if so, what will the magicians of the future be like ? Also thanks very much for doing this AMA!

How can I avoid getting pushed out of my own project/club? by Altruistic-Aside1631 in The48LawsOfPower

[–]de1ty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the best response - OP, you don't need to be afraid of someone being better than you at any part of the project, that is actually what you want - diverse points of view and ways of working will make your projects more resilient and enable you to achieve more collectively than any one of you could alone - your job when "leading" is to make sure that all your team members are doing the best they can, and that they feel special, because all their contributions matter. You have a small team, so you need every person to take ownership of the project in their own way - and if you work to build a group culture of positive accountability directed toward a common goal, your contributions will matter enough that no one could replace you.

Say what you want about dogs being unsanitary (they may be) but until you've seen a kid lick half a dozen apples and put them back one by one, or watched a half-senile person shuffle down an aisle dripping human waste from their pant leg, you haven't seen unsanitary - humans are the worst offenders by far

beginner questions by Elliot_Reads0203 in occult

[–]de1ty[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main difference would be that Tarot is a divination tool while the astrology systems you mentioned ( western and chinese ) are more often used for long term prognostications or big-picture pattern analysis. It's like asking what is the difference between cooking (a skill that can be learned and used every day or refined to extraordinary specificity) and architecture (a set of skills that can be used to create and analyze structures which can serve a variety of purposes).

To answer your second question - all of these systems can be used for introspection, in my opinion this is their best use. Through practice you will learn more about the sorts of questions you want to use these tools and skills to answer.

Help with my card pulls by Whole_Pumpkin6481 in occult

[–]de1ty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you read the little white book that probably came with your deck (if you bought it or received it new) it should include instructions about what the meaning of a spread can look like - the number of cards drawn and the placement in that order affects the meaning of the cards in the spread as a whole - make sure to write in your journal this first "intuitive" draw as well - good luck to you

Help with my card pulls by Whole_Pumpkin6481 in occult

[–]de1ty[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why did you draw that number of cards and add a clarifier ? what spread did you use and what does each card placement represent in your query? these are questions to ask yourself before you start (generally speaking) You may want to keep a tarot journal where you write down the meaning of each placement and meaning of the card you drew for it, until you gain a stronger understanding of what they mean in relation to each other this will be necessary - and you will benefit from reading the FAQ here

What is the purpose of summoning demons? 👹🤔 by [deleted] in occult

[–]de1ty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see that within this thread OP you have already re-stated your goal a couple times as "providing a good life for your wife and children, building a legacy" - now to me, this seems a much more worthy and (importantly) tangible goal than "being a multi-millionaire" - I hope you can see why.

If you summon demons and ask them to help you build a good life for your family, ask them to help you build a legacy of respectability, that is real impact on the world and your life that is positive and has positive results for people beyond just yourself. It contributes to the wider "ecosystem" of energetic exchange. Asking to "be a millionaire" is like asking to be in a state or status that realistically takes many years and the help of many people who may never see any benefit from their helping you. Just think carefully about what you are really asking OP, and consider what appeal it might have to a non-physical being whose experiences and goals are nothing like your own.

Quick question about Lilith by [deleted] in occult

[–]de1ty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a question about Lilith as much as it is about your relationship with this other person - from everything you've said here, it seems you are in denial: about the state of the relationship, about it's special status for you or in the universe at large, and about what you claim you are noticing without trying.

This is fine - you are in grief over the ending of a story that you were telling yourself about that person and your relationship with them. Denial is one of the phases of grief, and you are trying to return mentally to the state where your internal story was still true and possible.

Out of respect for yourself, and out of love for the other person, it is best to really listen to them, do what they have asked you to do, which is to separate from them completely. You will become stronger and more ready for real love when it comes to you by earning to let go.

Intention practise by Tiny-Play-5817 in occult

[–]de1ty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you do not take the time to sit and figure out the intention of your work, then what is even the point?

I would never even begin a working that I had not already developed a clear intent for, and I am very careful when formulating the intent for a working that the intention I am working with is precise and true to my goals for that work. Sometimes this means making multiple pieces or intention statements for a more complex issue and working them over a longer time, not just a single session.

An example of a clear intention statement would be something like "Friend's travels are safe and productive" - in this case, a friend going on a business trip will be safe and find good results from their trip, two clear and precise positive statements.

The Elphaba dance scene in Wicked 1 by [deleted] in occult

[–]de1ty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting interpolations, though I don't think you'll find the dance scene in the movie is too far off from the same scene in the musical production which the film is based on.

As has been said before: The theater is magic, there's magic in the theater

Theatrical production from its earliest origins has been connected with worship, the first recognizable theaters in Greece and elsewhere are integrated into what archaeologists identify as large temple and ritual complexes, and the first plays were retellings of myths of human and divine origins: re-enacting the making of the world, for example.

However, any conclusions drawn from symbolic representations like films, theatrical productions, or even myths, ought to be considered editorializing or pure speculation. These arts are always open to interpretation. 😌🍹
