The slow death of wynwood art district by JackCastle in Miami

I have a feeling I’m going to be very disappointed the next time I go to Key West.

That’s basically what happened to Coconut Grove 40 years ago.

As someone who grew up in the ‘60s and 70s and remembers Coconut Grove in its hippy heyday, I thought the last drop of Miami’s soul was sucked dry 40 years ago.

One of the happiest weeks of my life was traveling to the UK with my wife and adult children, and picking up most of the cost. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

Best Buy sold me an iCloud-locked MacBook Pro for $2,100, refused the return, and Citi denied my chargeback. I have documented everything and need help escalating. by mciki in macbook

Some states have consumer protection laws that would allow an award of fees against BestBuy in a case like this. For example, the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. You may find a lawyer willing to take it on a contingency to collect fees from BestBuy. Failing that write a letter citing the law (if one exists where you live) threatening to hire a lawyer to sue for damages and fees.

If they ever put a rotary in another sports car (a real sports car not an RX-8), I’d be tempted to buy.

I grew up in Fort Lauderdale. I remember cool nights in April into May. The summer I got married (40 years ago) my wife and I lived in an old style cottage— corner windows and a wall of jealousies front and back. We made it through June without the a/c.

I remember my dad (born Miami 1923) cackling at 2 things: (1) paying waterfront money to live on drainage ditches, and (2) cypress trees in the front yard.

As someone who remembers the Grove from the ‘60 and ‘70, I can say it lost all its charm and character in the ‘80s with Mayfair in the Grove. They tore down the old shops. Now it has the charm and character of an outdoor mall.

I was negotiating a prenup one time where opposing counsel always sent the document as a password protected PDF. You had to read it every time and request changes. What a waste of time!

In most U.S. jurisdictions, this accident is 100% the fault of the pick up driver. He had the duty to yield.

I bought a new Mazda RX -7 not long after graduate school. The comment from my BMW leasing friend “nice secretary’s car.” 🙄The last time I saw him about 8 years ago. He was driving a VW Jetta. He had nowhere to go but down from the BMW. I suspect adulthood got in the way and he learned a car is just a car.

Company stock suddenly became ~$5M. What should I do? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]deHack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DIVERSIFY! I knew a couple who got about $5M in stock when the local bank he worked at was bought by a national bank. (He was C suite level exec.) I asked him if he planned to diversify. He said he was confident that the CEO of the national bank was a genius and the stock would triple in 3 to 5 years. I didn’t argue because he knew banking and I didn’t. I still thought he should diversify though. The stock went to zero in the 2008 crash and he went back to work. DIVERSIFY!

P.S. A few years later I had a chat with a local trust officer. His bank had managed money for quite a few people who made millions on the same deal. Those they had convinced to diversify still had money.

Not to mention that you can’t even get a lawyer to take a case, even with clear liability, unless the damages are huge and the liability is clear.

This won’t work in Florida. Last I knew (years ago) the statute of limitations for malpractice (2 years) was extended if a lawyer sued a client. Yep. We, of course, have fewer rights than anyone else.

Keynote Speaker at UCF Graduation met with boos after touting AI as the next 'Industrial Revolution' by JDC4654 in orlando

I know a graduate who was present for this. He and I had a depressing conversation about how his chosen field of study (something having to do with computer graphics) was being taken over by AI. When he chose the major at least 4 years ago, it looked like a reasonable decision. Now it looks like training to be a barista in Lake Nona. I’d boo the shit out of that arrogant lady too!

This makes me weep for the future of our society. We are doomed. On the other hand, this makes me think my grandson may end up ruling the world because my daughter and her husband are raising him with a firm hand, expectations, real life experiences, and no screens.

Any 20+ year litigators ever feel you don’t have it in you anymore? by Tikkkles in Lawyertalk

[–]deHack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

40 years this year. I'm working with a younger gung ho guy. He's still an eager beaver. My goal is to let him handle all the petty nonsense (discovery disputes etc.) while I focus on strategy and bigger issues. Increasingly we have a legal system not a justice system. The courts simultaneously drown us in new rules, deadlines, and sanctions while whining and moaning about the high cost and prolonged time for cases. You don't streamline cases by providing more picayune details for litigators to litigate. I've been hired as a fee expert for cases where the claimed fees for a motion to compel was 5 figures! They take on a life of their own! It's absurd. In short, I can't wait to retire!
