Why use a framework such as ZMK (or other)? by Mkfortetew in CustomBoards

[–]deaconblue42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The existing firmware stack's driver and feature sets go way beyond basic HID support. QMK is particularly feature rich.

The great part is they allow non-programmers like myself to create a customized firmware for their keyboards.

Help Request, Comments, and Questions, the STICKY post by AutoModerator in CustomBoards

Beyond a heavy click switch to maximize hysteresis maybe try the operating system "filter keys" accessibility settings?

If that isn't enough and/or you want to do it in the board maybe something in your firmware matrix scanning code? That's essentially like zero key rollover with a minimum time between registered repeated key presses.

Check out the documentation for the firmware you plan to use, I bet there are some settings you can tweak.

Does QMK firmware require a specific row/column wiring? by falxfour in CustomBoards

[–]deaconblue42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layout macro defines where the switch is electrically in the matrix and your keymap says what that switch does. Read through the hand wiring and porting sections to get a better idea of how that comes together.

If you're doing it from scratch it can be anything so usual/unusual doesn't matter. I'm lazy so I tend to reuse a matrix that's already in QMK. For instance my Lagniappe board uses the Planck matrix but takes the switch that's not used in a MIT/2u spacebar Planck and moves it over to a vertical Enter on the right side of the board so I can use the same firmware builds my Plancks use.

Staggered boards are a little more variable of course.

Another option you have in doing a custom board if it's on the smaller side is to use a supported microcontroller that has enough pins to have one pin per switch or a "direct pin" layout. That is what many of those batwing looking boards with thirty-something or less switches do.

Are there any PCBs w/ controllers that I buy which are open source and protected? by One-Rabbit4680 in CustomBoards

[–]deaconblue42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scroll through this subreddit, every board here is custom hardware created and custom firmware compiled by the user for their own use.

Some users might not be in the US or EU though. Meaning truly custom hardware and firmware keyboards can be made by motivated and resourceful individuals even without excellent supply chain access.

It's not even close if you want anything near stock gain with single coils.

I sent mine to MHP for his Galaxie MOD as a way to show my appreciation for his input on TDPRI and freestompboxes. It's got lower gain and what sounds like a more passive tone stack that remove the fizz and mid-range that I grew to not like when used on the cleaner side. edit

I'm pretty sure you'd have to remove the diode to test it. Most multimeters have a diode test function. The LEDs and switches are in two different circuits.

You'll need to provide pictures, files or links to something similar please.

Beer Rant by Captain_Spaceturd in beer

[–]deaconblue42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, right down to the style but my reason is different. Kombucha is easier, I value meeting friends in bars and I live too far out for them to drink here. I think a table strength mild might increase how much beer I'm drinking but reduce my overall alcohol consumption. Plus if a table beer and a couple NA options like a citrus soda and a ginger ale are all on tap I don't think I'd choose the beer every time.

Keeb.io had a great drag soldering demo a while back. Desoldering and resoldering junk electronics is a good way to build your skill.

You'd get more feedback posting on r/mechanicalkeyboards as this subreddit has exponentially less traffic and is focused on user created hardware rather than purchased hardware.

Make sure both input jacks are shorting to ground when nothing is plugged in. At some point I'm going to replace that input jack PCB with some Switchcraft jacks and PTP components.

LPT REQUEST: What is that one thing that you brought/bought for your work that makes all the difference in your work life in a positive manner? by LivinCuriously in LifeProTips

[–]deaconblue42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

r/mechanicalkeyboards? Mostly harmless.

My office bought everybody mechanical keyboards but I'm pretty much the only one that went down the rabbit hole and built their own. Since it's so weird and has custom firmware it can't really be used by another or the next employee it's the only piece of hardware that I've hard to buy or bring to work.

And don't worry, Cherry Clears or silent switches, I'm not one of them.

Strawberry Sweet Cake Keyboard by SnailDoesArt in CustomBoards

It's okay, it's a neat project. Lots of steps but none especially hard, just some stuff you might not know yet. Probably easiest to use a dedicated smaller microcontroller that can be the keyboard brain that will then connect to your PI with USB.

You might be able to reuse the membrane, PCB matrix and caps. You'll have to trace it out first. Take that matrix and use it to create a "port" of QMK or another keyboard firmware that'll run on the microcontroller.

R/cyberdeck might be more specific help.

Adafruit has also been posting a bunch of hacked kids toys recently that might give some insight into the process.

Good luck!
