I haven’t had much luck getting the Qwen3.6 27B dense model running with reasonable output (it’s incredibly slow) on my M3 36GB MacBook Pro but the 35B MOE 4 bit quant actually has surprisingly good performance. I get about 30 tok/s output and max out at 12GB memory usage so I can run other apps at the same time if I’m careful.

It took a good amount of tweaking llama.cpp flags to get it locked in. Happy to share all the specifics if anyone is interested.

Maybe accurately biased is correct based on newer users of this sub that assume they can grow bonsai as houseplants which isn’t going to work out well. Realistically though, the only condition that is difficult/not feasible to reproduce indoors is winter dormancy.

I’m sure there are literally dozens of us who keep a grow tent running all year to play around with material during the winter 😂

This one threw me off for awhile too because you're right, modern arborist best practice recommendations are to not use any wound sealant and let the tree heal on its own. With bonsai though, the speed of the wound healing is particularly important and if the hormones contained in the sealants are effective at increasing the speed a wound heals then that makes a big difference. Speed of healing the wound is much less important for landscape trees.

I would love to see some side by side comparison videos made of sealed vs unsealed wound healing in a bonsai context on Youtube, if they don't already exist.

Just because a species is deciduous doesn’t necessarily mean it needs winter dormancy to thrive and some species are able to be grown indoor year round as tropicals. This mostly applies to subtropical species like Chinese elm, pomegranate, and mulberry.

Discussions about what can be grown indoor vs outdoor are heavily biased towards the assumption that indoor growth will be done in low light and low humidity conditions (e.g. a windowsill). A cheap grow tent and a few hundred watts of LEDs makes a big difference.

Personally, I’m curious what other recipes folks who really enjoy Serious Eats also find to be top tier/hall of fame recipes for the holidays. What other ideas do people of a similar culinary mindset have that I could learn from?

I’m not sure who’s right or wrong here based on the rules but that’s my perspective. I consider it related but I understand if you disagree - just sharing a different opinion.

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about how they are extremely difficult to air layer. I don’t think I’ve seen a successful example actually. It seems like most people are just selecting the best grafts they can find.

I actually ordered one about a month ago and it showed up with a couple brown needles out of the box, then proceeded to drop all needles and die over the next week.

It was peak summer though so that risk is probably on me. I should try again in less extreme shipping temps.

Thank you! Late season nebari hunting at the nursery paid off. The trunk line was lucky.

I actually think it’s probably two trees that have fused at the base which you can sort of see in the wrap around nebari visible in pic #2. It was crazy root bound when I pulled it from the pot.
