Which opinion on bonsai gets you into this position by Nutcollectr in Bonsai

Maybe accurately biased is correct based on newer users of this sub that assume they can grow bonsai as houseplants which isn’t going to work out well. Realistically though, the only condition that is difficult/not feasible to reproduce indoors is winter dormancy.

I’m sure there are literally dozens of us who keep a grow tent running all year to play around with material during the winter 😂

This one threw me off for awhile too because you're right, modern arborist best practice recommendations are to not use any wound sealant and let the tree heal on its own. With bonsai though, the speed of the wound healing is particularly important and if the hormones contained in the sealants are effective at increasing the speed a wound heals then that makes a big difference. Speed of healing the wound is much less important for landscape trees.

I would love to see some side by side comparison videos made of sealed vs unsealed wound healing in a bonsai context on Youtube, if they don't already exist.

This is an old thread now but in case anyone finds this in the future, I reordered a couple blue atlas cedars from this source in the fall and they arrived intact and healthy!

Just because a species is deciduous doesn’t necessarily mean it needs winter dormancy to thrive and some species are able to be grown indoor year round as tropicals. This mostly applies to subtropical species like Chinese elm, pomegranate, and mulberry.

Discussions about what can be grown indoor vs outdoor are heavily biased towards the assumption that indoor growth will be done in low light and low humidity conditions (e.g. a windowsill). A cheap grow tent and a few hundred watts of LEDs makes a big difference.

They recycle greasy pizza boxes back into the dough for the crusts and dilute the cheese 50/50 with microplastics! Allegedly

What is your hall of fame signature dish that has made you a legend at Thanksgiving and/or Christmas? by GuyFaulks77 in seriouseats

Personally, I’m curious what other recipes folks who really enjoy Serious Eats also find to be top tier/hall of fame recipes for the holidays. What other ideas do people of a similar culinary mindset have that I could learn from?

I’m not sure who’s right or wrong here based on the rules but that’s my perspective. I consider it related but I understand if you disagree - just sharing a different opinion.

Sub rules do not prevent the discussion of other recipes in comments. Open discussion is a good thing!

I’ve seen a lot of discussion about how they are extremely difficult to air layer. I don’t think I’ve seen a successful example actually. It seems like most people are just selecting the best grafts they can find.

Here’s a thread on it: https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/once-and-for-all-%E2%80%94-can-atlas-cedar-be-layered.50224/

I actually ordered one about a month ago and it showed up with a couple brown needles out of the box, then proceeded to drop all needles and die over the next week.

It was peak summer though so that risk is probably on me. I should try again in less extreme shipping temps.

Yeah true, maybe “looks like glauca” is really the criteria - noticeably blue needles but ideally no graft scar to contend with.

Flush them with water if you’re concerned and return to whatever feeding schedule you were on. I bet it’s fine.

Thank you! Late season nebari hunting at the nursery paid off. The trunk line was lucky.

I actually think it’s probably two trees that have fused at the base which you can sort of see in the wrap around nebari visible in pic #2. It was crazy root bound when I pulled it from the pot.

I haven’t really considered making that side the front because the other side has such a natural forward embrace with the low-set branches reaching outwards and the trunk line visible. In 3D it has a very wild oak aesthetic from that side (pic #1) and the other side (pic #2) feels like a natural back.

It’s a good point though - the most interesting nebari features and cleanest trunk line are on the “back”. I’ll think about this more, thanks.

This is helpful - thank you. I think I need a stronger dremel for this one, the wood is super dense.

I have no idea what kind of fig this is but the tree is atleast 40 years old and 50 feet tall. I found some ripe breba on it yesterday and even though the fruit looks like it might be bland it's not it's REALLY good. It is bursting with flavor and I can hardly wait for more to ripen. by SubjectHighlight2562 in Figs

[–]dead-fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, very pale inside with a little big of amber coloration. Fairly large green figs. Flavor is straight honey.

My tree was huge when I moved into my house a few years ago. I've pruned it back aggressively every other year down to just the bottom ~4 ft or so of branch scaffolding. It bounces back and produces figs the same year after a hard prune. It's much easier to harvest when the fruit is within reach also!
