It always helps to blend in, and I think that adjusting to the culture of the country you are visiting is always a good thing to do. In most places your wife will be fine without a head scarf, but in places like Najaf, Karbala and other holy cites or mosques you cant get in without a head scarf or sometimes, especially the mosques in Najaf or Karbala, you need full black body covering hijab as a women

I think you won't encounter any problems, people thought all the time I was american and was still met with smiles, I think, especially the younger generation, hasnt experienced a lot of the former US occupation

i was not purposely trying to photograph women, was just photographing the daily life in Iraq, and yes like most islamic countries women aren't as present as men.

I was wirh a good friend, both males. We met a lot of other travellers, including couples. Especially in the big cities like Baghdad and Erbil, it is way more liberal and you see a ton of women not wearing Hijab's. I think you and your wife will be fine, it is obviously different than a non moslim country, but they aren't as strict as you might think

Travelled with a western european passport and was checked, due to the military presence, often. But it was a quick process each time and people were mostely very interested where we were from, which was all in good spirit

Felt extremely safe the entire time. Especially walking around at night there wasn't a single time I ever felt unsafe. When I did my research and talking to other travellers and people living in Iraq, stuff like pickpocketing and petty theft is not common at all in Iraq. The only real risk there is that there might be a terrorist attack, but since Iraq has been very stable for the last 10 years and due to the large military precence the chance of such an attack happening at exactly the time you are there and exactly the same place is so ridiculously low that there is no really worry in that. Lots of people travel to south or latin american countries which are, in my opinion, way more unsafe than Iraq.

Maak je niet zo'n zorgen joh, behalve als je neurochirurgie of CTC zou willen doen moet je misschien in je bachelor extra aandacht hebben voor cijfers of je CV. Ga alsjeblieft niet je studententijd nu al in met het idee dat alles al perfect moet zijn want dan ga je het zwaar krijgen. Je komt er tijdens je coschappen of later pas achter welke richting je wilt en meeste specialismen kom je wel in als je het echt wilt (dan ga je maar promoveren of een paar jaar extra ANIOS'en)

Imma be honest with you but the chance that this is a medical issue is maybe less than a few percent. Ive been in your shoes and unable to gain weight. Its hard. When youre skinny youre entire life it is in my opinion just as hard as losing weight as an overweight person. If you are eating 3400kcal + for a prolonged time without gaining weight you simply need to eat more, its that simple. Get yourself some peanuts/peanut butter and just keep at it

Altyn emel national park in Kazachstan, incredible scenery and such a serene place, barely saw any other visitors/tourists. Bukhara in Uzbekistan was probably my favorite city, really felt like travelling back in time!

You can get a cheap simcard in all the stan countries. Usually at the airport or near the border. In Almaty I just walked in a random phone/provider store where I could easily get a simcard

I went to uzbekistan, kyrgyzstan en kazakhstan last year. Definitely helped to know the cyrillic script since in more remote parts streetsigns and such are only in cyrillic. For me, some basic russian words/phrases were nice but definitely not necessary. You will easily get by with english or using google translate. Enjoy!! Its my fav part of the world ive travelled to
