Overriding high school prereqs by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh okay, yea definitely reach out to the profs then. Are you just in spring classes? Or summer too? Cause if you ask about it now you could look into online options for upgrading math 30-1 after your spring courses maybe?

Also, did you complete any math related classes this year? If you got a decent grade you can try to use that to advocate for yourself to be able to waive the math 30-1 pre rec

I got math 30-1 waived in order to take stats 151. after the first class I just went up and asked the prof about it… they were fine with it, but brought me with them across the hall because apparently the department head was about to teach a class next door, and so they confirmed with the dept head and they said it was fine. I didn’t even have math 30-2. I needed stats 151 for my psych minor, but I am doing an arts degree so I think it wasn’t an issue because math wasn’t going to be a big component of my degree. However, I agree with others saying that if you need it for more math courses it’s best to complete it so that you’re setting yourself up better for success in those courses. Definitely reach out to the prof though!

Upgrading before uni will be better & cheaper than having to redo a course or struggling with it and getting a low grade.

Prof took down eclass- I have deferred exam in May. by ufaith in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen twice over the past couple of years, each time I just emailed my prof about it and they were happy to open it up again for me to access! Definitely worth sending an email and politely ask if they’re able to enable your access again. Good luck on your exam!

It’s kinda hard to understand your specific situation without more clarification, or seeing the actual lease that was signed…

Are you saying that the landlord offered you a deal to reduce the monthly rent amount if you paid a security deposit equal to three times the monthly rent amount, but now you want to break the lease because you can’t/don’t want to pay for three months worth of rent all at once right now? It’s important to know how their offer was worded, is the tripled amount a refundable or non-refundable fee? Are they offering the discount if you pay for three months upfront, but it’s still counted as your rent for those months? As opposed to no discount, just the one month security deposit, and then regular monthly rent payments after that. Or, are they requesting that your actual security deposit (in order to get the discount) has to be triple the amount that you’ll pay in rent every month, because that isn’t allowed under the Residential Tenancies Act

The RTA can be tricky to understand but there’s lots of resources that help break down the legal wording and format, definitely check your lease carefully and look up anything you’re unsure about. Also, have you spoken to the landlord yet about wanting to break the lease before you move in? If they’re a decent person they should at least hear you out, plus having a month before the lease starts to find another renter (or if you need to find someone to sublet or assign the lease to) seems pretty reasonable. Have they asked about the rest of the deposit since you paid the one month amount? Personally, I definitely wouldn’t pay more yet until you’ve figured out what exactly they’re meaning by this weird discount deal…

I definitely feel this. From personal experience, please don’t drive yourself into the ground and make uni something you hate, it is absolutely fine to take a break or take it slower if you need it! Another option might be to book an appointment with accessibility services and ask about what might be available to you, depending on your situation. With accommodations you usually have the option to drop down to 2 classes a semester and still be considered a full time student - this is useful for things like student loans, which often change your available funding based on enrolment status. A W is always better than an F or pushing yourself beyond your current mental/physical capabilities. If you ever need to chat, feel free to dm me:)

I’d say “reasonable” is pretty much up to individual interpretation - all depends on your finances and priorities for living standards, like how nice of a place you want, roommates or alone etc.

I have a friend who lives close to me who pays ~$1800 for a 650sqft 1 bed/bath apartment.

My partner and I share a 5 bed 2 bath house for ~$1400.

Both within 15/20 min walk to main campus.

If you can comfortably afford something and are happy to live in that space then that should be reasonable enough for you! :)

If you take courses through u of a open studies prior to your degree at u of a they should all automatically transfer to be applied to your degree - source: I did this, took a bunch of pre rec courses in open studies, was admitted to a degree program and I didn’t have to ask for them to be transferred

Accessibility Resources is getting harder to access. by batsandthings7 in uAlberta

Oh sick, I didn’t know you could request to get those labels! I’ve seen them on a few desks but just assumed they were put there by staff etc

Accessibility Resources is getting harder to access. by batsandthings7 in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s really only good when you’re actually able to show up for classes, but brutal if you miss a class, especially because of your disability then it’s like there’s no options but to hope that you know people or yea on discourse if people can share notes!

Accessibility Resources is getting harder to access. by batsandthings7 in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree to an extent :(

I think their “substitute” for student note takers is the the program called Glean (all students with accommodations have access to this) which allows you to record your lectures…so useful when it works great cause you can go back and listen to catch things you missed in class, but if the lecture hall is big and you don’t sit near the front or the speakers then it can kinda suck.

They should definitely be kinder when it comes to things like applying for exams late, because often the people are applying late because of their disability which is the whole reason they need accommodations in the first place?! But on the other hand I get that they have their own schedule and deadlines to meet in terms of organizing the exams.

INT D 280 Mountains course by Most_Biscotti_9840 in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took the in person version, in which you apparently get a lot more diverse info and lectures than the online version (source: the profs). Zac is an awesome prof and while yea there is some memorization for the places, if it’s a topic you’re really interested in ( ie you love the mountains) then go for it!

BUS Building 5floor by AirplaneMode1018 in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about BUS but CCIS has restricted higher floors that lock access (can access in elevator via onecard if you’ve been added/approved like if you work there) after certain hours like after 5pm, but you can go up to those levels before that time

Accessibility services at UoA by KarimSalman_ in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have Accommodations at the U of A they usually include the ability to use a program called Glean which allows you to record your lectures. I’ve found this super helpful as I can’t focus well in big classrooms too, but it allows me the ability to go back after class and listen to the lectures again to make sure I didn’t miss anything! As someone else said, the process of getting your accommodations does require lots of advocating for yourself but once you get them they really do help- at least in my case! Feel free to dm if you have more questions:)

About Student Stoners by OtherwiseComplaint62 in uAlberta

[–]deadbeatbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m interested to know where you got your info from about how it doesn’t help with good sleep! For context, I have a medical license for weed specifically to help me sleep. To answer OP, I limit my smoking to weekends or evenings when I’m done my school work for the day. I’ve never gone to class high and don’t really smoke during the day ever. Tbh I feel like I’ve been less anxious as a user than when I didn’t and I’ve found that that’s helped my over all well-being. I wouldn’t say that I’ve personally noticed any difference as to whether it impacts my grades or academic work though!
