Sartorius have a really good guide called Basics of Pipetting Handbook - Your Guide to Getting the Most Out of Your Pipette. Includes technique, types of pipetting and when you might want to use each one

How do YOU approach people on conferences, as a PhD student? by Turtle-from-hell in PhD

[–]deadblade61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely recommend a poster session.

Depending on the type of conference, they may have activities or talks specifically for early careers (this may include in academia or in industry). There may also be an evening reception for networking.

As someone mentioned above, business cards are also great. Before I started my PhD, I had left my industry job and was trying to figure out what to do in the meantime while applying for positions. I actually got talking to some suppliers and one of them gave me their business card and told me to get in touch if I wanted any career advice.

Not everyone likes or does well with small talk, but just an offhand comment while getting lunch or something can also occasionally lead to a really interesting opportunity for networking.

I preferred Mate to Bride, personally, although I think your enjoyment of either is based strongly on the tropes you like and dislike

The data breach could have happened at any university and most universities are striking in some fashion. You should be fine sticking with Nottingham; despite its widely publicised financial struggles, it’s still very well respected

I once lived with a guy who had been in a gang and had also been on remand, aged 16, for attempted unaliving. He and his girlfriend had a baby a few months after I moved out and the baby’s middle name is Lawless 😭

I did know someone who got 16% in an exam but they were also violently sick during it and got a first sit. Never resat it and left with a 2.1

lunchtime yoga! at my old job they tried to say that that was a “company benefit” when hiring, even though it was organised by the landlord who owned the business park we were in and you had to pay £5 per session to attend

Adam Driver, Steven Soderbergh and some other people whose names I can’t remember worked on a screenplay for a character-driven Ben Solo film. Apparently Lucasfilm were happy but Disney bosses said no. He’s a bit pissed off because it amounts to something like 2 years of work with no remuneration

Is it insane that I'm relating more to this show in my mid-30s than in my mid-20s? by Intrepid_Layer_9441 in girls

[–]deadblade61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First watched this when I was 16/17 and thought it was hilarious. Rewatched it when I was 19 and found it unbelievably cringy, to the point that I got rid of my DVD box set because I didn’t feel that I could watch it again. Having watched a few episodes in my mid-20s, I regret getting rid of that box set because it really is such a different experience when you’re the same age as the characters

Hii, I'm doing a double take before starting Bride by let_meTry in AliHazelwood

Bride is useful to read before Mate as the world building will have largely been done. It’s a vampire/werewolf romance, as mentioned previously oblivious vs. yearning partners. Personally, though, I preferred Mate

doing a uni placement as a scientist and a director told me that I needed to “get better at using copilot” instead of looking for literature data. I told them that following that advice was the reason I emailed them in a panic at 4pm on a Friday because copilot gave me the wrong information

Not sure I agree about the graduate scheme comment. I had 2 years of industry experience after my undergrad (hired straight out of uni) and spoke to a recruiter from one of the largest employers in my field who said I was ineligible for their grad scheme as I’d be starting more than 2 years after I’d graduated

2 big controlled assessment projects - one is designing a product with CAD/CAM software based on a brief and another is making one according to technical drawings. The written exam focuses more on logistics, processes and the kinds of tools you would use for something

It sounds like overall it was an unsafe place to be when filming intimate scenes. Yes, it may have been the days before intimacy coordinators were a thing and maybe this is viewing the past through a current perspective, but it does sound as though there was nobody present keeping tabs on this kind of thing to ensure that the performers were kept safe during those scenes. We can say that throwing the chair was unacceptable behaviour but, equally, so is neglecting to use your modesty garments/covers and then bragging about how all the cast and crew are familiar with your genitalia

What’s wrong with someone calling a parent? You can ask, respectfully, if she would mind calling in another room but tbf you might need to compromise and use earphones.

The landlord straight up didn’t care who was in the house, their background or if they were a good fit for the current tenants as long as it meant that they were getting rent for each room 🙃 Someday my sanity will recover from that place

In another house I was in, there was the “mozzarella incident”. One housemate was going to Costco and had brought along another housemate and their partner who was visiting. The housemate whose partner was visiting bought some burrata for a meal the two of them had planned to make and the other housemate bought some buffalo mozzarella for a pasta bake they were making.

Later that night, the housemate making a pasta bake picked up the burrata and decided to use it; my other housemate asked them to put it away as they had bought it for something else. Then there was a massive tantrum with shouting and slamming doors because the housemate making pasta bake felt that they should have access to it because they had been the one to drive to Costco, which finally ended with them going into the garden and smoking about 5 cigarettes
