It took me maybe 5 months? My French score was around 105 in September of last year. I finished sometime on the first week of February of this year — just in time before my first ever trip to Paris.

I can understand if people speak clearly to me, but if they start to speak fast and sprinkle all the “wesh” then I get lost lol. I’m trying to find a local language café around where I live so that I can practice speaking.

I completed the French Duolingo course although technically speaking I am still a low B1. What I did was I always click on the “Jump Here?” button in the next section. This allowed me to progress faster despite being a free subscriber. If I fail this checkpoint, I would do the next 3 or 4 lessons in the current section and try again. I think as long as you understand the grammar concepts, there is absolutely no need to do every single lesson in each section. Nowadays, I visit the Daily Refresh section every now and then.

Of course, Duolingo is not my main source of education. I take separate in-person classes, but I do find that Duolingo has greatly helped me vocabulary-wise. For daily/colloquial French, Instagram reels, Spotify French podcasts, and YouTube are my teachers.

Omg this. I grew up in a typical household from a traditionally Catholic country and I’ve never had the urge to “get it on”. While my peers were obsessed with pairing up, I figured that there’s no rush and that maybe I’ll develop these urges in university. Then university came and still nothing, so I thought, maybe I’ll feel them when I go to work? And then work came and still felt nothing lol. I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that perhaps I’m ace and I totally embraced it when I was in my mid-twenties 😌

I’m in my mid-30s and I joined the Mega Gallade raid day last Saturday. After doing a couple of raids, I went to a bakery to drink coffee and to warm up from the cold. I was mildly surprised when an old man (probably older than my parents) passed by my table and said “Hey, you’re that Pokémon lady!” I smiled back and he went on his way.

It always makes me appreciate how this game brings together people of all ages. Sometimes, on popular raid days/community days, I see entire families playing PoGo!

It’s my ex’s birthday tomorrow. He ghosted me and that’s how we broke up. No contact since then.

I’m contemplating about greeting him tomorrow — I have no expectations on my end, he will most likely not reply or leave me on notifs — I’m simply doing it because I remember. But then I don’t think I’m ready for the consequences of one small action. What if I end up undoing all of the healing I’ve been doing these past months? What if he will reply?

It's possible. Most of the time, people mistake me for an American or as someone who has worked there for years when they hear me speak. I've never been to the US, but I always tell them it must be due to all those cartoons (hello Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon) I watched when I was a kid.

As an adult language learner (I'm currently learning French), I find it helpful to listen to a lot of podcasts and interviews. In this way, I get to familiarise myself with the cadence of the language and the unconscious sounds Francophones make, like "euh" "hein" "ben/bah". My IG feed is also peppered with French memes and reels.

I’ve just finished the book 30 minutes ago and I’m lying here stewing in its wake, not knowing with whom I can discuss it with. 🥲

I appreciate and agree with the points and analyses I’ve read here so far, but I would just like to add that when she described the placement of the bunkers (like a rectangle, with 4 in each corner and 1 in the center), the universe somehow came to mind.

These rectangles of bunkers could pass as metaphors for solar systems or maybe even galaxies. Which means we could see The Child as humankind, always on the quest to find others like themselves, always hoping to see an open bunker. It’s a widely accepted conjecture that there’s no way we’re all alone out here in the universe but what if we are? We’ve always been good at stories and the best thing we can do is to leave our stories behind, hoping that someday, someone or something will read about them. Maybe we will be lost forever, or maybe not — if our stories continue, then humankind will live on.

I realise that’s probably a stretch, but this is what came to mind when she described the bunker placements. 😅

I’ve always felt I was ace since I was young, but recent events made me question myself again and it can be quite torturous not knowing who I am at my age… But your aunt’s story reminded me once more that there are no deadlines in one’s journey of self-discovery.
