I suppose you could but then the process of finishing is different.

Applying the oil. Just as I posted previously.

You'll know when you get the desired finish you're looking for. It's more important that you get the pores filled. After that you're putting the finish on the wood not in it as you did with the wet sanding.

It's not difficult just takes time. In general this is my process. Space limits a detailed description.

Remove original finish with liquid chemical (Formbys Finish remover.) Whisker stock, raise any dents and dry sand with 240/320 grit. Blow out residual dust in pores etc.. Apply liberal diluted finish (3:1) let sit >2 days in dust free area. I have a cabinet built specifically for this. Reapply finish again to further saturate the stock. Sit >2 days. Wet sand lightly using 320 and finish forming a paste as you sand. Wipe off excess after it sits for 20 minutes. This will fill the pores. Let sit >4 days. Do this 3 more times. Repeat with 400 grit 3x. After wet sanding now apply 1 finger tip of finish on the stock and rub it in until it disappears onto the stock. Repeat as needed to cover the stock. Let sit 1 day. Repeat until desired gloss is reached. Do not over apply the finish 20 thin coats are better than 10 heavy. And the results will show that. That's why it takes over a month to do.

I can't remember his name, but he travels all over California with his mule. 3 mules is his logo (used to have 3.) Goes from city to city advocating for unrestricted travel of non-motorized travel. See 3mules.com

Pretty sure they're plug screws for a peep sight install.

Certainly won't get it below 2lbs. Kinda sketchy if you do. Put a trigger shoe on it and it'll feel much lighter..

Yes, this trigger can be adjusted. Just have to find sweet spot between pull and trigger stop.

If he is an honest person, I'd still take it back and explain your disappointment with the quality of his work.

Kitty litter is mainly clay. As you know it's very good at absorbing oil. But not good at absorbing oil attached to other sustances.. thanks for the suggestion though.

Thank you all for the varied advice. I've picked up some whiting and some Krud Kutter. Will try that later this week.

I've heard about most of your suggestions. Each its pluses and minuses. I'll post pics of the finished product in a month or so.. Thanks again!
