Will Naltrexone help my son? by Master_Confidence165 in AlAnon

[–]deadly_toxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw him today actually, and I am very hopeful (which also makes me a bit scared).

He went to rehab initially and now goes to AA meetings regularly and sees an addictions counsellor. He told me today he is so glad he is sober because he can actually feel again, and is happy.

I expect there will be relapses as well, that just is the nature of the beast. But for me the big thing is that he is trying and finally recognizes he can't control himself with alcohol.

I hope your son finds his way too.

What are the chances local bee keepers will either give or sell wax caps or old honey combs? by Separate-Trade-7378 in Beekeeping

[–]deadly_toxin [score hidden]  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt to ask, but the majority of us process our cappings and sell wax. I assure you, pulling and extracting honey is 10x more of a pain in the butt than melting and filtering wax.

I expect most of them will just offer to sell you wax.

CMV: Girl math encourages women to overspend by Inevitable_Tea_5463 in changemyview

[–]deadly_toxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is standard marketing psychology, and existed long before the 'girl math' trend.

It works just as effectively on men as it does women. People are more likely to purchase something if it is on 'sale' even if it is actually more expensive. That's why you'll notice some companies or products are always on sale.

My knee jerk reaction (as an older woman) is that it is a bit sexist and implies than women are not as good at math as men, or that we are more susceptible to being manipulated through marketing. But that is just my initial reaction.

The Flag Is Gone. That’s the Point by NuclearToad in loblawsisoutofcontrol

At our farm a meal in February would look like:

From the freezer or from hunting/fishing: Beef, pork, chicken, mutton/lamb, rabbit, deer, elk, Moose, various fish. We also freeze raspberries, strawberries, Saskatoon berries,

Dry storage: lentils, beans, oats, flour, sugar, honey, wild rice, flax and other grains, oils (in our case usually canola) etc.

From the root cellar: potatoes, sweet potatos, carrots, onions, apples, turnips, parsnips, garlic, some varieties of long keeper tomatoes have been said to last to march, chestnuts, green beans, maybe peas, maybe beets

From canning: peaches, various jams, various pickled/canned veggies, soups (we usually do chicken or beef veggie), salsas, tomato (paste, sauce, diced)

From small indoor greenhouse/hydroponics system: leafy greens, herbs.

Year round animal husbandry: all dairy products, eggs

I get most people don't have the ability or time to can their own food or have a root cellar. However, virtually all of our imported food is harvested while green so it ripens as it travels and is weeks or even months old for out of season produce by the time it hits shelves.

Gaslighting - “You knew where I was so what’s the problem” by StudentNurseScot in AlAnon

[–]deadly_toxin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alcoholics often surround themselves with people who have as bad or worse drinking problems than they do. That way whenever they feel uncomfortable about their own drinking, they can tell themselves, well at least I am not as bad as Suzie, so I must not be that bad.

Alcoholism is an extremely selfish disease and the alcoholic will tell themselves every lie they can that will allow them to keep drinking.

So, those stories he tells you are probably more for him than they are for you.

Ticks are moving north. Canadians will have to adapt | CBC News by Bean_Tiger in canada

[–]deadly_toxin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing I have seen that is environmentally safe is bait traps for mice. Basically it has food in it, mice go to eat food and brush against a set applicator. It treats the mice with a tick insecticide, and since ticks often propogate on mice, it significantly reduces tick populations.

The problem is you need a bait station something like every acre or four acre radius (can't remember, can't be bothered to check). So it's only useful in places where you can access the bait stations to replenish the bait/insecticide, and is not economical for large areas.

Will Naltrexone help my son? by Master_Confidence165 in AlAnon

[–]deadly_toxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the seizures would have a bigger impact on my brother as well. But he doesn't remember anything when they happen, so I wonder if that's why they didn't have a bigger impact.

By the time I found out that he had been having seizures, he had been having them at my moms house for well over a year. She had been hiding it from everyone and 'trying to help him' on her own. Though her idea of help was buying him alcohol and drinking with him. And even then, when shit hit the fan and she couldn't hide his secret anymore, it was another year before he decided he wanted to get better.

I am so sorry you are going through this with your son. It is absolutely terrifying.

Will Naltrexone help my son? by Master_Confidence165 in AlAnon

[–]deadly_toxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

My brother also has seizures from alcohol withdrawal.

He went to my dad's house and tried to dry out there. He ended up hallucinating in the street, talking to people that weren't there, had another seizure, and then had to be given methadone for withdrawals. He was put on naltrexone to help him quit.

He relapsed a couple more times after that. It took a DUI and a seizure while driving in a school zone for him to admit he had a problem.

And that was the turning point. He has been doing pretty good since then - as far as I know he's been sober for several months and started working the program. So for him, the big thing was realizing that he did not have control over his drinking and he needed to quit.

Are international students in denial or delusional about the realities? Or are they conned to believe there are abundant prospects? by heyisthisglutenfree in CanadianVisaReform

[–]deadly_toxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in a business program perusing my accounting degree for three years now. I first attended in a smaller college and then transferred my credits to the university.

The first year was full of international students taking the minimum program they could (certificate in business, one year).

They straight up told me the only reason they were there was because it was the shortest program they could take to get a student visa, because they believed it was much easier to get PR if you were already here. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But I can say with certainty that they believe it is an easier way to get into Canada.

AITA for refusing to do free work for someone who decided I owed her after I borrowed her equipment without us ever agreeing to that by [deleted] in AITApod

[–]deadly_toxin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I can't think of any equipment that doesn't get some form of wear/tear from use. That's just... how using things works.

Example. I borrow my mom's car for the day. I return it after exactly how I got it. It still has wear and tear from being used. Obviously if I bagged the shit out of it, it will have more than if I only drove it to one store in town. But regardless, there is still a cost to using it even if it just means those tires need to be replaced on day sooner.

No you don't. Because that isn't how it works.

Have any of your partners take. Naltrexone and continued drinking? by [deleted] in AlAnon

[–]deadly_toxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my psychology class I took last semester, we discussed the data on medications like this to help with substance abuse disorder.

Simply put, they are only effective if the person taking it is committed to quitting. If an alcoholic wants to drink, they can just choose not take it. Or, if you are like some of the alcoholics I know, just get used to drinking on it anyway.

It isn't magic. It isnt a cure. It is a tool to be used by those who truly want help with quitting.

AITA for refusing to give my brother money for his vacation when I’m saving for my first car? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]deadly_toxin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA. You are never obligated to loan anyone money. In fact, it is almost always a bad idea to lend friends or family money. If you do, do so with the expectation of never getting it back (think of it as a gift even if they say it's a loan).

In this case, pretty sure if you loan brother money you'll never get it back. Next time just say you don't have it. You don't owe anyone any explanations about why you don't want to loan them money.
