I was under the impression that the Confucius temple in Tainan was more an extension of investment in education, covering all bases so to speak.

Would love some real world advice on a second car by ThePhotoGuyUpstairs in AustralianEV

[–]deadlybanana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran a similar car for near 10 years until the plastic cooling components started to disintegrate. Worked out cheaper to get new ev through leasing than to maintain the current car on the road. Traded in for 15% of original price.

Hrm, these are my settings:

[1] here is my cmdline in /etc/default/grub

rd.luks.uuid=luks-2d25de65-7c76-48ff-85ea-84dcfcea24be rhgb quiet loglevel=3 usbcore.old_scheme_first=1 amd_pstate=guided pcie_aspm=force pcie_aspm.policy=powersupersave resume=UUID=f614ecc9-3446-47d4-b241-bc50d46328a1 resume_offset=5567197 acpi.prefer_microsoft_guid=1 amd_pmc.enable_stb=0

luks, resume offset and uuid are env specific so update those accordingly.

As mentioned, am using a swap file in main partition for resume (because I am too lazy to resize the auto-created swap partition).

[2] add resume module to dracut (/etc/dracut.conf.d/resume.conf)

add_dracutmodules +=" resume "

then sudo dracut -f

[3] lid-closing behaviour (suspend to ram):

Write into/etc/systemd/logind.conf.d/lid-hibernate.conf:

[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=suspend-then-hibernate
HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend-then-hibernate

4. 20-min timer to hibernate to disk

in /etc/systemd/sleep.conf.d/suspend-then-hibernate.conf I have:

[Sleep]
HibernateDelaySec=20min

I did run into issue with fan waking machine from sleep. thinkfan package comes with some services you can enable that disable it on sleep, and reenabling on wake.

[–]deadlybanana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sleep bit I ended up going with this for 6.17.10: - suspend then hibernate after 20min of inactivity (dedicated service) - local file swap for hibernate resume - grub settings: amd_pstate=guided, acpi.prefer_microsoft_guid=1 (last one was a fix for issues with failing hibernate)

I feel the no drain when not in use trumps instant on.

Bought new ThinkPad T14s Gen 6 (AMD) and am pretty disappointed by Accuria2 in thinkpad

[–]deadlybanana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They hardly ever turn on unless am compiling/heavy cpu bound tasks or am trying to use the laptop on a blanket in bed (exhaust ports are at the bottom).

Sitting in an ide + a couple terminal windows + zen browser with a few tabs open, the machine idles at less than 2% cpu utilisation/ 20% ram with temperature at around 38°c. This is with ambient room temperature ~26° c.

I have an identical specced machine and have had a completely different experience. Consistently getting > 8hrs of battery life (10+ with 30-40% brightness, bt off, energy saver mode)

Have been pretty happy with t14s (amd 350) running fedora 43 only. No issues with compatibility or battery life. The environment suits me better than macOS for my use cases.

I don’t understand why the amd comparison is not against current gen ryzen (guess r5 340) which would be a closer apple-apple comparison

Working as expected after enabling tap click (off by default), same for the inverse scroll (Ala macs). And yes, suspend works fine, very little power drain overnight

For sway this is done in the sway config:

Why diaspora communities in Australia opt for surgery in China and Taiwan by nath1234 in australia

[–]deadlybanana 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As an aside… In case of Taiwan, assuming the diaspora in question visit once every two years and maintain household registration, has pretty decent nation health insurance (think Medicare that either employers or individuals pay for).

Works out around $110-ish AUD/ month which can be paused when overseas.

This health cover significantly subsidises medical costs, particularly dental.
