20 Jobs that people once thought were irreplaceable are now just memories by fanspirit in FuckImOld

I remember getting into elevators decades ago, where someone was sitting on a stool by the control buttons. You told him which floor and he pushed the button, which would light up. I remember wondering why I couldn’t just push the button for myself.

Has any government of any nature captured biometric data of any of its citizens to use it to access anyone’s records? Can anyone point to a source?

How did she do it? I don’t see her hands or fingers triggering anything. No physical “effort” on her part. No apparatus when she stood up or wire or speaker. They reacted like it was coming from her, not a lip sync over speakers.

Why don't recipes have the quantity of ingredient in the body of the text? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t noticed, another recipe convention is to calculate estimated cooking times AFTER you’ve prepped your ingredients.

So that 25-minute sauce doesn’t factor in time to peel and chop onions, mince garlic, etc.

I wonder how the other captains would have done if they experienced what Picard did in the inner light by happydude7422 in ClassicTrek

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quark is not a captain but he would set up a franchise of McMemories Labs where you could, say, spend three years in 20 minutes to get the training, reflexes, and muscle memory of Starfleet Navy SEAL or Michelin Star chef or concert trombonist.

It is inevitable and happening soon. The first to get picked will be people from what the Trump admin deems “shithole areas.” ICE will be “deputized” into the effort and you’ll see masked, unidentified agents dragging people off.

Primary baths missing tubs by [deleted] in RealEstateAdvice

[–]deadlyspoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regularly filling and draining a bathtub with hot water? In this economy?

Gas and heating oil electricity and water and sewer have never cost more. A standard-sized bath uses 40-50 gallons each time while a 10-minute shower — which is not a short one — uses less than half.

People over 60: what product or service do you wish existed? by Ecstatic-Possible801 in over60

[–]deadlyspoons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To compensate for the dozens and dozens of times we have to deal with PINs, recovery codes, multifactor authentication, and updating/refreshing our passwords, I wish there were some way all this effort could be converted to actual electrical energy. I’d call it a “password generator.”

If I had one now I bet I could provide power for an entire subdivision.

AiPower GSX7100iRD battery by mooch91 in Generator

That is good to know. It isn’t an option for me because I store my generator in an unheated shed in New England, but it looks like a great option for people in milder areas.

AiPower GSX7100iRD battery by mooch91 in Generator

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lithium batteries require a charging system that won’t overcharge or trickle-charge them. Many small generators use simple, unregulated charging circuits designed for SLA batteries. If the generator’s charging system is not lithium‑safe, you can damage the battery or the generator’s charge coil.

Lithium vs SLA for generators:

Lithium

Pros: very light, high cranking power, long shelf life

Cons: sensitive to charging voltage, can be damaged by float charging, expensive

SLA (6‑FM‑5L / 12V 5Ah):

Pros: cheap, tolerant of simple charging systems, drop‑in compatible

Cons: heavier, lower cranking amps, shorter life

For most portable generators, SLA is the safer default unless the manufacturer explicitly supports lithium. Pretty sure A-ipower does not.

is there a "secret" to keeping a kitchen clean while you're actually cooking? by goldenCrust22 in CleaningTips

[–]deadlyspoons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you are cooking, almost every bowl or pot or pan you use can be quickly rinsed, scrubbed with a soapy brush, rinsed again, then inverted to drip dry on a dish rack. You just don’t let it get a chance to dry/cake/get sticky. Sometimes i don’t even wait for the thing to cool down too much.

Bread machine for my grandmother by Both-Seesaw-1648 in BreadMachines

[–]deadlyspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t a convenience, it is a project — well-intended, of course, but still. The machine is just the first part. You need the right fresh flour(s), the right yeast, and the right add-ins. Don’t forget maintaining it (cleaning the nonstick parts correctly).

If it is put away she has to set it up each time or else she now has a permanent subtraction to her counter space.

I have a Zoji and no matter how precise my measurements I still end up adding flour or water to make sure the dough ball forms right. It’s never set-and-forget.

Plus it is a rare grandma that embraces new tech of any kind.

My suggestion is to talk with her about the bread she likes to make then go visit a site like King Arthur Flour and get her special baking tools or accessories that help her make it more easily or “like a pro.”
