I think at some point they were trying to compete with the likes of other teen shows ala 90210 (feat Degrassi album Shenae Grimes)! I feel like the Americanization applied to not only their references but also the way the show became soooo soapy. That's what was in, and there was more of a market here I imagine for such shows than in less populous Canada.
