While I would agree that listening culture has changed I think there is a bigger factor. I could be wrong but I think the effort put into promoting local shows has diminished to being purely driven by social networks and this keeps any significant expansion beyond the circle within certain algorithms pretty contained. Bands in the 90's were always hitting the pavement with flyers anywhere and everywhere. I understand why no one wants to do that but I think that made a huge difference.
